Research Areas
Theoretical research in Argonne's Physics Division addresses a broad range of problems involving the stucture and dynamics of hadrons and nuclei. There is a strong emphasis on comparison to data provided by experimental groups at Argonne and at other facilities around the world. The principal areas of research include: Several of these projects require major numerical simulations using massively parallel state-of-the-art computers, including the Argonne LCRC Linux cluster ( Jazz ), the Argonne MCS IBM BG/L ( Blue Gene ) and the NERSC IBM SP ( Seaborg ). Many projects also involve collaborators at US and foreign universities, and other national laboratories.

Quantum cosmology and eternal inflation
Authors: Alexander Vilenkin
Categories: gr-qc
Comments: To appear in "The Future of Theoretical Physics and Cosmology", proceedings of the conference in honor of Stephen Hawking's 60'th birthday
This contribution consists of two parts. In the first part, I review the tunneling approach to quantum cosmology and comment on the alternative approaches. In the second part, I discuss the relation between quantum cosmology and eternal inflation. In particular, I discuss whether or not we need quantum cosmology in the light of eternal inflation, and whether or not quantum cosmology makes any testable predictions.

The Theoretical Physics group at the University of Manchester is an amalgamation of the theory groups of the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST. Our interest are wide-ranging, from biological physics through various aspects of condensed matter physics to nuclear physics and some particle physics. (But note that most of the School's particle physics activity now occurs in the particle physics group We have 11 permanent academic members of staff, and we hope soon to have an additional group in complex systems, which would be closely linked to our group. THEORETICAL PHYSICS
Curiosity about the world and a commitment to solving problems - these are the passions that drive the theoretical physics group at the University of Sydney. The aim of the group is to carry out internationally competitive research in theoretical physics. There are two main emphases: plasma physics, including applications to astrophysics, space physics and laboratory experiments; and electromagnetic theory and photonics , including wave theory, and linear, nonlinear and guided optics. Other interests include quantum optics, quantum electrodynamics, statistical physics and biophysics. The members of the Research Centre for Theoretical Astrophysics (RCFTA) and the Center for Wave Physics are part of the Theoretical Physics group. The RCFTA undertakes research in theoretical astrophysics with special emphasis on the fundamental physics of stars and on the physics of non-thermal phenomena. The aims of the Center for Wave Physics are to integrate expertise in the various components of wave science to generate new insights into fundamental wave science across disciplines. Associated groups include the Optical Fibre Technology Centre , the Photonics CRC and the VisLab computer visualization centre.

    • We develop a general theory for Mott criticality of bosons at half filling on the triangular lattice. (6/18/05) In the previous posting, we described the discovery of a supersolid phase of the XXZ model on the triangular lattice, even in the limit of infinitely strong interactions. But the superfluidity is amazingly weak - so we think of this as an indication the system is close to a quantum phase transition to a Mott insulator, where the superfluidity would vanish. This closeness would neatly explain the strange observations remarked on below. We (Anton Burkov and LB) have developed a general theory of the quantum critical points in half-filled boson systems on the triangular lattice. There are a number of interesting Mott transitions that can occur, from the superfluid directly to a Mott state, or from different supersolids to Mott states. All the transitions we found in this way are "exotic", i.e defy the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson (LGW) paradigm, and can be thought of in one way or another as "deconfined" quantum critical points. Density modulations in the "Ferrimagnetic" solid state, as calculated by the dual vortex theory.

This particular directory contains packages for ActivePerl builds 8xx, based on perl-5.8; if you are looking for packages for ActivePerl builds 6xx, based on perl-5.6, see http://theoryx5.uwinnipeg.ca/ppmpackages/ If a desired package isn't available here, you can request one to be supplied. Packages in this directory may be installed by giving the following command at a DOS prompt: where package.ppd is the name of the package listed below (with a .ppd extension added). Alternatively, you can add repositories to the ppm utility (see the help facility within the ppm shell for the syntax of how to do so); doing this allows you to search for and install packages within the ppm shell using the syntax: ppm> search something ppm> install Some-Package A set of repositories, suitable for adding to the ppm utility of ActivePerl 8xx, is given below - make sure to add only those repositories corresponding to your Perl version, as reported by

The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota has been home to the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute (FTPI) since its inception in 1987. The most important function of FTPI is to produce significant, exciting and sound theoretical physics that will have an impact on physics as a whole. To this end the institute provides a meeting place for theorists from around the globe to exchange and develop ideas. FTPI sponsors short-term workshops and longer-term programs, as well as hosting visitors for long-term stays, and serves to advance theoretical physics in its broader context by promoting programs that bridge different fields. We hope you'll explore our website and find out more about us. university of minnesota
