Ronn Owens Voice of Reason Ronn Owens: A Voice of Rationalization By Jim Arnold swprod@sonic.net The Voice of Reason . It reads like a breezy series of musings on any and every topic crossing his mind, from political strategy to traffic congestion, expressing what he considers an eminently rational point of view. Unfortunately, Owens often confuses reason with rationalization. And considering his wide popularity and influence, the most important consequence of the book is, ironically, that reason needs to be rescued and clarified. rationalization A common form of rationalization draws on and exploits misleading or inappropriate analogies. Is questioning the origins of international hatred toward the United States, in the aftermath of 9/11, like blaming a rape victim, as Owens insists, or is it more like trying to show a bully the error of his ways? Owens presumes the victim analogy to be most apt and begs the question, calling those who would object "absurd." But genuine reason seeks to place events in their most comprehensive contexts and uses analogies only after careful qualification, establishing their appropriateness in terms of larger principles. Rationalization finds such questioning disturbing, potentially debilitating, and is compelled to dismiss it in abortive terms.

The network is initially built around Alessio Corti (Cambridge), Gustav Delius (York), David Evans - coordinator (Cardiff), Nigel Hitchin (Oxford), Shahn Majid (Queen Mary, London), Andreas Recknagel (King's London) and Miles Reid (Warwick). Funding by EPSRC grant GR/R36596/01 will enable individual visits as well as informal one or two day meetings and network workshops. Like all scientific institutions, ICTP runs services providing for the record and dissemination of the knowledge created or updated within its walls or transferred by means of its high-level training programmes. A special and unique feature of the Centre is its belonging to the family of the United Nations, which implies particular attention to the needs of emerging countries. In more than forty years, the publications and printing services have evolved from a nearly craftsmanship set-up to one using up-to-date technology. From their debut, great importance was assigned to these services since their product (preprints, reports, lecture notes and preprint registries) was nearly the only connection of many scientific institutions in the developing countries and in Eastern Europe with the advances of physics and mathematics achieved in the industrialized world. Publications
The office handles scientific research results obtained by resident scientific staff and by scientific visitors (associate members, staff associates and others), which are published as preprints or reports. Some 10,000 articles in various fields have been published since 1964. All these preprints may now be consulted on-line.

    56. Objective World Of Physics
Presents and reviews Relativity Theory, Quantum Physics, and Cosmogical concepts.
    http://home.comcast.net/~tjbesmer/
Objective World of Physics WEB Page of Tom Besmer Welcome to my world of Physics. On this site are found a prologue and six articles that deal with physics review and the development of a new energy concept. Reviewed are: Einstein's works, Newton 's works, Maxwell's works, Gravitational Force Field (GFF), Electromagnetic radiation, Cosmology, Quantum Physics, and the Speed of Light and developed are: a new energy concept, Frequency shifts and the Speed of light as a function of wavelength and media (GFF). It is important to understand that modern day technology has been a process. The best way to study the process is historically. e.g . The vacuum tube came before the transistor, the transistor is the precursor to the latest in integrated circuits, and Einstein's works were initiated because he thought that there was a discrepancy between the works of Newton and Maxwell. Einstein, an intellectual giant, has been voted man of the century. One aspect of his Special Theory of Relativity led to the famous E = mc He won the Nobel Prize for explaining the photo-electric effect. The papers of this site do not deny any of Einstein's accomplishments. They do however question one of his postulates "the speed of light is a universal constant, relative to nothing". The articles here deal with the variation of the speed of light as a function of media. A new energy concept is derived, developed, and introduced. It expands the present day concept of the speed of light. It turns out that the General Theory of Relativity is unnecessary if the time and distance measurements of the Special Theory of Relativity become objective and real. This is true if it can be demonstrated that the speed of light is not a universal constant, an initial condition. Its value varies as function of media and is relative to any movement of the measuring device.
