On March 17, the National Building Museum opens the doors to a new show: The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks. They'll soon be celebrating 40 years at Disneyland. In the Disney theme parks around the world there are so many things that catch your eye. The architecture, the grand landscaping, and the overall scenery all draw each visitor into the mystical world of each park. But there is one more thing, I believe, that makes the Disney experience different from other theme parks. That element is the atmosphere talent groups carefully placed throughout the park.
The Disneyland Band Not only do these groups provide an escape from the perils of those long queues; they also offer a chance for the guests to become part of the show. Disney has had a long tradition of atmosphere talent groups, especially musical groups. The original Disneyland Band was only hired for a two week run, but with the favorable crowd response the band attained Walt immediately gave them an extension, which has run almost 45 years now.

D isneyland has been a powerful symbol of contemporary American culture from the moment it opened on July 17, 1955. Just as Disney's theme parks have expanded around the globe, their architectural strategies have spread far beyond the park enclosures. Disney's style has suggested a new approach to the "real-world" architecture of the shopping mall and the resort, and has subtly changed public expectations of the cityscape. As a result, Disneyland has been a lasting subject of controversy and debate. Celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of the consumer society, "Disneyland" has become a watchword in the cultural battleground between "high" and "low," a metaphor for America's entertainment culture, and a synonym for what trivializes or sentimentalizes the world around us.
This exhibition casts a fresh eye on critical aspects of modern America's architectural cultureits promises, its roots and offshoots, and its unparalleled worldwide impact. Organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal and curated by Karal Ann Marling, Professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks presents 350 unique drawings, models, paintings, and plans for the parks and their attractions from the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Photo Gallery to the National Garden Festival (Bundesgartenschau, or buga for short) in Munich

Over 5 million fairgoers are expected to turn out for this year's National Garden Festival from 28 April to 9 October 2005. But things are not exactly rosy for Germany's 6000-plus landscape architects, who have a hard time of it in times of empty coffers. What are the future prospects for landscape architecture in Germany? No, the Bible doesn't go into detail. At least not about the Garden of Eden. No acreage figures, no maps of the flora. According to Genesis, "every tree" grew there that was "pleasant to the sight and good for food". But that's all it says on the subject of the vegetation, though the Garden of Eden played quite a decisive part in human history. After all, when Adam and Eve were driven out they lost paradise on earth. A paradise we long to regain now more than ever. Yet our efforts bear but small-time fruit: on the windowsill, the kitchen balcony or in the diminutive front and backyards of our terraced houses. So you can count yourself mighty lucky to catch a gander of flourishing plant life on a sizeable scale – say, 43 hectares of fields, woods, lawns and flowerbeds with two million flowers, 26,000 maples, oaks, ashes, pines and lime trees as well as 8,650 bushes and shrubs. In other words, you've got to be among the five-million-strong throng expected to attend this year's Bundesgartenschau (

Designing Disney
Defenders of Disneyland often cite the fact Disney created a world that was never there until he conceived of it, and that this alone is a sufficient accomplishment. A facile argument. Why consumer escapism as opposed to enlightened social transformation of our "real" environments and communities? I can only answer that Disney's films, though I only saw a few as a kid, Fantasia for one, remained engraven on my memory as something distinct from nature, or the city life I was accustomed to. The syntheticism of the cartoon genre was attractive precisely because it was so out of the ordinary. Perhaps it was this sense of non-referentiality embodied in the cartoon genre that led Disney to dream of non-spaces, extraordinary funfairs that could capture the hearts and minds of post-War America's children and have them exiting the place smiling. Was it all a response to a sense of loss. either personal or from the War or depression? In 1954, when the groundbreaking ceremonies for Disneyland finally took place after consultation on planning from the management of Coney Island of Cincinnati and the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the public was still in the dark as to what Disneyland actually would be like. The following year, Disney elaborated, and the public witnessed, the gradual building of Disneyland week by week on Disney's television programme. It became one long advertisement for the park. When Disneyland officially opened on July 17th, 1955 the ceremonies were presented live on ABC. What an irony in hindsight, since like the proverbial PacMan, Disney gobbled up ABC like another energy bite in 1985. Indeed, on hearing of this Charlie Gibson admitted on Good Morning America: "I never thought I'd work for a guy named Mickey!"

Theme Design vs Architecture By Peter Alexander

    Totally Fun Company
So you want to design a theme entertainment project? Okay, so where do you start? You start by selecting an architect, right?
So, what are the principles of theme design that your show designer will utilize
to create this world? Well, there are too many to enumerate in one short article, but I can discuss a few, starting with the first stage of theme design, concept development. Square One: Concept Development Picking A Theme: The Tale of Too Many Smurfs Picking A Theme: Brand In The Right Format In the early nineties, Time Warner acquired the Six Flags chain, which then consisted of seven theme parks. At that time, the parks had gone through several owners and had been decreasing in value and attendance for years. While the parks had originally been designed as family adventures, the addition of roller coaster after roller coaster had turned them into teenage amusement zones, and as the families left, the revenues and the profits of the chain declined. I said yes, and about seven months later we opened the Batman Stunt Show in three theme parks. The impact on Six Flags was immediate and substantial. Attendance increased at all three parks, but more importantly, the stunt show format brought the families back to the parks, which increased the per capita spending, and turned the parks around. Bob Pittman told me later that the Batman Stunt Show had positively affected Six Flags success far more than the (more expensive) Batman (roller coaster) ride because the shows had changed the character of the parks and the demographics of the guests.

AN INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL BODY FOR THEMEING, RESORT HOSPITALITY AND COASTAL SPACE PLANNING THEMES AND ENTERTAINMENT Themes, Entertainment The theme park, as an experience design, differs from amusement parks in the critical design intent of its architects. Theme landscapes are developed to distill a glimpse of world /out of this world locations, not unlike a world's fair, at a single location. These entertainment complexes are familiar vacation territories for generations of the world's travel public, as theme parks are deliberately designed to be internationally-focused attractants. The successful dynamism of these landscapes designed for appeal and dependable itinerary offer assurances of what can be expected, with safety and value for the expense of time and money. Generally, themed landscapes perpetuate and promote folk history and cultural traditions, as these are exploited, yet celebrated, simultaneously.
