Theme Park Architecture in the Real World Through its emphasis on intimacy and human circulation, every Disneyland repudiates the sprawling urban realm that has been built since the 1950s. Disney's original Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT), or Project X, was planned as a "New Town" for actual Florida residents based on the urban concepts of planner Victor Gruen. However, because of Walt Disney's death, it was never built. The concept drawings for this gigantic and rarely discussed project tellingly reveal Disney's evolving urban vision. His theme parks inspired his plans to reform the American city. The exhibition culminates with a look at Disneyland's impact on the real worldits influence on shopping malls, restaurants, and city planningas well as Disney's place in our collective psyche. Disneyland's thematic nature has had an enormous impact. We know Disneyland so well that it is easy to overlook its conscious and unconscious influence and meanings. While the Disney dream with all its enchantment and largesse is unquestionably designed to entertain, this exhibition also reveals its enormous impact as a rational and complex approach to design and space. The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks
March 17 - August 5, 2001
Disneyland, the world’s first theme park, opened in Anaheim, California, in 1955. Structured by its themes, the park was divided into five smaller "lands" designed around cinematic and cultural motifs with particular meaning to Walt Disney: Main Street U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland, Frontierland, and Tomorrowland. The architecture of the theme park was familiar from movies and television shows: Disneyland was a kind of backlot tour of a make-believe place where the illusion of a frontier town or a space colony could be conjured up at will. At the same time Disney saw the park as a tacit critique of the chaotic American city and the meandering post-war suburbs that were ruled by the automobile. New approaches to architecture and city planning are still central elements of the Disney parks. Today, the principles embedded in Disneyland have spread outside the parks and into the hotel complexes surrounding them, into stores and malls, and into our daily lives.

The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks
Opens March 17, 2001 at the National Building Museum

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks, a major exhibition exploring the evolution of the Disney theme parks, will open at the National Building Museum on March 17, 2001 . The exhibition traces the development of each sector of the parks themselves - Main Street, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland, and examines EPCOT’s simulated worlds and the real world architecture of Disney’s hotels and retailing shops. The exhibition will be on view through August 5, 2001.
Organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal and curated by Karal Ann Marling, professor of art history and American studies at the University of Minnesota, the exhibition will present nearly 350 objects selected from the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering. The artifacts include plans, drawings, paintings and models for the parks and their attractions; posters, prints and advertisements used to promote the parks; and historical photographs of the projects.
The exhibition has been designed to reflect Disneyland itself. At the original park in Anaheim - and those in Orlando, Tokyo and the outskirts of Paris - the "magic kingdom" is separated from the outside world. An entrance avenue, Main Street, leads straight to a plaza (known as "the hub") from which visitors visit each of the cinematic "lands," distinguished by a vertical landmark (known as a "wienie") drawing visitors toward it. The greatest of the wienies is the symbol of Disneyland itself, the Castle, which serves as the entrance to Fantasyland.

"The human spirit in design is one of the strongest thematic elements there is. A sincere and passionate project drawn straight from the heart can succeed at a deeper level as the audience can sense the sincerity but not point directly to it. That passion translates to a vigilant attitude that details matter and all communicate that core emotion as part of a greater whole." - Eddie Sotto Eddie Sotto is a thinker, a visionary, and a designer on the cutting edge of entertainment design. He was recently Senior Vice President of Concept Design at Walt Disney Imagineering and is currently Chief Creative Officer at Progress City. Here's part one of our interview with Imagineer Eddie Sotto.
Nate Naversen: Thanks for joining me for this interview.
Eddie Sotto: You're very welcome, Nate. Glad to be here. NN: First of all, what inspired you to get into this business? ES: Disneyland and the movies. My father recently recounted my first inspiration to me: Our first trip to Disneyland when I was about 5 years old. We stood on Main Street U.S.A., spellbound while watching the fireworks. When it was over he asked me, "Eddie, Do you like Disneyland?"

MODERN ART MUSEUM OF FORT WORTH TO EXHIBIT
THE ARCHITECTURE OF REASSURANCE:
DESIGNING THE DISNEY THEME PARKS Fort Worth, Texas, November 23, 1998
....Dr. Marla Price, Director of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, announced today that the museum will be one of five American museums to host The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks . "The Wonderful World of Disney" will be brought to the Modern Art Museum through this one-of-a-kind exhibition that explores the history of Disney theme parks from original concept to the most recent developments. The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks will be on view at the Modern's main location, in Fort Worth's Cultural District, February 13 through April 11, 1999. The national tour of this exhibition is sponsored by Target Stores, Dayton's and Mervyn's California.
The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks will present some 350 objects selected form the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering. These include plans, drawings, paintings, models for the parks and their attractions, historical photographs of the projects and advertisements used to promote the parks on view in a major museum exhibition for the first time ever.
From the moment it opened on July 17, 1955 with 24-camera live television coverage Disneyland has been a powerful symbol of contemporary American culture. Just as Disney's theme parks have expanded around the globe so have their architectural strategies spread beyond the park enclosures suggesting new approaches to the "real world" architecture of the shopping center, the resort and subtly changing public expectations of the cityscape. As a result, Disneyland has been a lasting subject of controversy and debate. Celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of the consumer society of simulation and of pastiche. "Disneyland" has become a watchword in the cultural battleground between "high" and "low" a metaphor for America's entertainment culture and a synonym for what trivializes or sentimentalizes the world around us.

Window on China A first trip to Window on China reminds visitors of the famous novel Gulliver's Travels. What really catches their eye is not little people but the astonishing accuracy of the 1:25th scale replicas of some of the world's most famous buildings. Located in Lungtan (..) near Shihmen Dam some 50 kilometers south of Taipei, Window on China is a marvelous miniature world that was originally designed to provide an overview of traditional Chinese buildings in mainland China and Taiwan, as well as to illustrate modern Taiwanese architecture. Window on China was established 11 years ago when theme parks were not very popular yet and tourist sites were just developing in Taiwan. The chairman of the park, C. H. Chu, recalls when he began thinking of doing something special for tourism in Taiwan. He started researching theme parks around the world. As his model, he chose the Madurodam in the Netherlands, a 'Lilliputian' world illustrating the daily activities of Netherlanders. Then he began to carry out his dream. From the beginning there were difficulties. Obtaining the original blueprints and construction diagrams of the buildings from mainland China proved frustrating. Chu set up a research group to gather data from Taiwan, Japan, and elsewhere, but not all the members of the group had the appropriate academic or architectural training; many had construction experience only. Strict attention to detail as well as intense trial and experimentation went into the creation of the faithful miniature replicasdown to the accuracy of the living trees, shrubs, and tiny figures.

Circuses and theme parks are already widely under attack. Many have downplayed their performing creatures or cut them entirely in the case of circuses. Others still are marred with systematic boycotting and active campaigns and leafleting against them. In response theme parks, like seaworld make specious claims that they are doing research. However, although much derided, these interfaces are ones in which the intimacy that trainers develop with their animals offers a profound insight into the close ongoing often tremendously cooperative relationships between humans and animals. Little of the intellectual understanding that trainers have of their animals is communicated to the larger public, but it does involve deep cross species understandings, and does demonstrate the tremendous skill and expertise about animals that develops outside of formal academic contexts. Designing Disney's Theme Parks : The Architecture of Reassurance
Description :
Uniting a roster of authors chosen from wide-ranging disciplines, this study is the first to examine the influence of Disneyland on both our built environment and our architectural imagination. Tracing the relationship of the Disney parks to their historical forbears, it charts Disneyland's evolution from one man's personal dream to a multinational enterprise, a process in which the Disney "magic" has moved ever closer to the real world. Editor Karal Ann Marling, Professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, draws upon her pioneering work in the Disney archives to reconstruct and analyze the intentions and strategies behind the parks.
