Works4Me presents weekly practical classroom tips from real experts your colleagues!
This week's Works4Me offers tips for modifying spelling tests to help struggling students and for developing interdisciplinary thematic units. 1. Spelling Test Modifications
From Elizabeth Spicer (peechtchr@yahoo.com), a speech pathologist for the Salem Keizer School District in Salem, Oregon: "Here are some spelling test modifications that can work for struggling students and for those students that are more advanced. Have the students look for sound and letter patterns in their spelling words. Have them put the number of syllables in a word, at the end of the word, in a circle. For many students who struggle with auditory processing and auditory memory/sequencing, it helps to put a line or box for each letter on their test paper. Some teachers balk at this because they think it's cheating but as the student gets higher and higher scores, it can be taken away. "Show the students how to calculate their percentages correctly and have them make bar graphs of their spelling scores to give them feedback. The more immediate the feedback, the better off they will be. These kinds of modifications can be written in on the IEP for special education students. If teachers don't like the extra work involved with specially designing test papers, they can teach older students to do it for themselves. If it helps them, they are more willing to do it. If the student finds it helpful, he will use it as a study tool later. For more advanced children, add columns for Synonym, Antonym, Homonym/Homophone and Rhyming Word; they have to fill in at least one. Leave a space under each word to compose a sentence using that spelling word."

Students in bilingual and ESL classrooms manipulate more than one language and are influenced by more than one culture. Their experiences with these languages and cultures influence their learning. The more we understand the personal, socio-cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of bilingual students, the better equipped we will be to provide these students with an effective learning environment. This environment should be one that supports learning in a second language and culture, while fostering a positive attitude and respect for the other language and culture. The responsibility for English language learning, academic progress, and integration of bilingual and ESL learners into the school community should be assumed by all personnel at the school, not just by the bilingual and ESL staff. School administrators should make certain that bilingual students have opportunities to integrate both socially and academically with monolingual English speakers ( Brisk, 1998

Who Are They?
Adjusting to a new language and culture is a challenging and difficult process that takes several years. The more you know about your ESL students and their backgrounds, the more you will be able to help them. Some important questions are:
  • What country do they come from? What language(s) do they and their families speak? Are they immigrants or refugees? What was life like in their native country? What was their previous schooling experience? What is their level of literacy in their native language? What are some of the cultural aspects of their culture that may impact their experience in your class (taboos, sex roles, gestures, kinesthetics, etc.)?

About this series : Math for multiple intelligences
I have been teaching for seven years and am currently teaching eighth grade pre-algebra and algebra at Culbreth Middle School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. My students come from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and they also range greatly in motivation and attention to academics. But one common thread runs through all of them: if I find a way to capture their attention and show them that I care about them, they will work wonders for me during the course of our year together. how

Teaching Interdisciplinary Thematic Units in Language Arts
Prepared by: Naomi Ritter
ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading, English, and Communication Digest #142
Teaching language arts through thematic units across the curriculum typically integrates broad areas of knowledge, such as social studies, mathematics, or ecology with the teaching of the four major language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Definition and Rationale
Lipson et al. (1993) trace the idea of curriculum integration to reforms of the 1930s specifically to John Dewey's 1933 discussion of meaningful learning. In the language arts the term "integration" usually refers not to content areas, but rather to recognizing the natural interrelationship of the four language skills. Accordingly, we may understand integration as two adjacent, linked teaching areas: first, the interrelated language arts themselves, then the further inclusion of other content areas within the already integrated language curriculum. The trend to combine these two approaches represents an interdisciplinary curriculum what Schubert (1993) calls "a true window on the world." Lipson et al. analyze the underlying rationale for thematic teaching as:

Women's History Month, Part 1: American Women March is the annual celebration of National Women's History Month, a time to honor the achievements and contributions of women. The theme for the 2002 celebration is "Women Sustaining the American Spirit." Get in the spirit and join the Homeschool Learning Network as we explore some of the many accomplishments of women in our two-part unit. In Part One, learn about some achievements of American women. Creative Writing Legendary newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, who in 1911 endowed the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for exemplary journalism, had this advice for aspiring writers: "Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light." The difficulty of teaching children to write creatively is also legendary. We can, however, follow Pulitzer's advice and attempt to teach them to write with clarity, accuracy, brevity, and beauty. Today's creative writing lessons will help in that effort!
