By - Rachel Schaeffer
Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 8/9
Objective:
Students will understand the content and themes discussed in four poems by Edgar Allan Poe: "The Raven", "The Bells", "Eldorado", and "Annabel Lee." They will also understand the process or readers theater and group dramatic presentations. Materials:
Several copies of each poem; markers; butcher paper, tape, glue, various art supplies for set design and prop creation. I have students bring in any supplies and props that I cannot provide. Suggested Time Frame: 4-5 class sessions to work and 1-2 class sessions to present. We have 50 minute class sessions. Activities: Session 1: Introduce basic information about Poe as an author. I also discuss the concept of atmosphere/tone as it relates to Poe's work. I then read the four poems aloud and have students listen for two things: 1)examples of Poe's common tone through vocabulary and description and 2)the storyline/events depicted in the poem (what is the poem about). This is just a basic introduction because in the days following I expect small groups to really delve into the poems' meanings and stories.

Around the Globe and Back Again: Shakespeare's Globe Theater Then and Now
Janine Polla Werner
Five 45-minute class periods
Shakespeare's Globe was the most popular English theater of its time, frequented by people from all walks of Elizabethan life. From 1599 until 1640, everyone from lords and ladies to apprentices and paupers filled the galleries and yard to experience the Bard's tragedies, comedies, and histories. Today we understand The Globe's significance as a physical center for literature, history, and social interaction.
Through the activities presented in this lesson, students will become familiar with the history and design of The Globe Theater, understand Shakespearean drama as a form of popular entertainment, and appreciate the grand vision and scope behind the new Globe Theater. They will gain an understanding of the impact live Shakespearean productions had on cultural literacy and the development of the English language.
Students will be able to:
  • Understand a form of entertainment popular four hundred years ago via their own prior knowledge and experiences
  • Identify the structural features of the Globe Theater
  • Describe the experience of audience members based on their location in the theater
  • Describe the experience of actors performing in the Globe Theater
  • Account for the negative reaction the local government and religious community held toward theaters in general

  • Resources A. Student Objectives
    • To acquaint students with the New Deal's Federal Theatre Project (FTP) and the rationale for its creation.
    • To identify social, economic, and political issues which were the focus of Living Newspaper productions of the FTP.
    • To see how the arts can inform people about historical issues and events.
    • To debate the government's role in supporting the arts.
    • To analyze primary source material regarding the relationship between art and propaganda.
    B. Background Information Activity in the arts was one aspect of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Established in April 1935 and directed by Harry Hopkins, its purpose was to provide socially useful work for the unemployed. WPA programs included the construction of public buildings such as schools, hospitals and courthouses; highways; recreational facilities such as athletic fields and parks and playgrounds; and conservation facilities such as fish hatcheries and bird sanctuaries. The FTP was controversial. Its supporters hailed it as a wonderful experiment while critics saw it as "boondoggling", a heavy handed propaganda effort for the New Deal. Mired in controversy, Hallie Flanagan came to the defense of the project declaring in an essay, "Democracy and the Drama," that the plays produced by the FTP ". . . represent the new frontier in America, a frontier against disease, dirt, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and despair. . . ."
