In 1855, the Michigan Agricultural College (M.A.C.) was founded, the first of its kind in the nation, and for many years it functioned without benefit of an organized arts component. In 1902, Ms. Maud Marshall presented H.M.S. PINAFORE as an extension of the budding instructional activities of the M.A.C. Chorus. Two years earlier, Mr. E. Sylvester King joined the faculty to teach public speaking. By 1907 King was regularly teaching courses in dramatic art and organized the first public presentation of a playas an extension of his teaching. The work of Marshall and King set a precedent of public performance as an appropriate extension of the academic function of the college. Thereafter, production of arts events became a natural consequence of classroom instruction. Kings maiden production in 1910 was Sheridans THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL which was rehearsed on the fourth floor of Agriculture Hall. The play was presented on a low portable stage in the Armory with virtually no scenery. SCANDAL served to aid the new student newspaper THE HOLCAD. The enthusiasm which surrounded this production led to the formation of the M.A.C. Dramatic Club. Various other productions were presented by the club in the years which followed, especially in the Spring Term when outof-door productions such as AS YOU LIKE IT and A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM were presented in the beautiful natural surroundings of the campus environment. The pattern of productions held out of doors in the Spring Term and in the Armory during other parts of the year continued until the construction of the Bandstand in 1938 which was located on the site of the present Bessey Hall.

The King's Theatre The Theatre originally had Stalls and three circles - Dress, Family and Gallery. The Gallery was uncomfortable and latterly unsafe and was removed in the fifties reducing the Theatre to three levels with additional seating at the back of what is now called the Upper Circle. The present seating capacity is 1350. The interior décor is very ornate with nine boxes either side of the proscenium and there are fine examples of Edwardian stained glass in the foyer doors. The present Upper Circle bar area was originally a Billiard Room and there were shops either side of the entrance at street level.

    KiMo Theatre - History
Oreste and Maria Bachechi The KiMo Theatre, a Pueblo Deco picture palace, opened on September 19, 1927. Pueblo Deco was a flamboyant, short-lived architectural style that fused the spirit of the Native American cultures of the Southwest with the exuberance of Art Deco. Pueblo Deco appeared at a time when movie-mad communities were constructing film palaces based on exotic models such as Moorish mosques and Chinese pavilions. Native American motifs appeared in only a handful of theatres; of those few, the KiMo is the undisputed king. Bachechi envisioned a unique, Southwestern style theatre, and hired Carl Boller of the Boller Brothers to design it. The Bollers had designed a Wild West-Rococo-style theatre in San Antonio and a Spanish cathedral cum Greco-Babylonian interior in St. Joseph, Missouri.

is often credited as being the first to incorporate songs as part of the action. This style was continued by Kern, Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, and most fully realized in 1927 in Showboat , the first show in which songs were written to match the story line, rather than the other way around.
When the United States entered World War I in 1917, the theatre community rallied. Irving Berlin wrote Yip, Yip, Yaphank Ziegfield Follies of 1917 was so popular that the French government reportedly commissioned pictures of the leading actress, Kay Laurell, to help recruit soldiers. Broadway stars organized food drives, promoted Liberty Bonds on stage and even volunteered on a seventeen-city tour, raising well over half a million dollars for the Red Cross.

Welcome to the Galleon Theatre Group Website.
We are a community theatre group located in the
    south-western suburbs of Adelaide, Australia.
2000 is Galleon's 33rd year of affordable entertainment
    - no small achievement for any amateur theatre group.
And although we may not be the longest running group
in Adelaide, we're certainly one of the strongest.
From Galleon's humble beginnings to its current success
and following, our secret has always been the inclusion
of "fresh blood" and our readiness to experiment and provide one of the biggest ranges of plays any group has to offer. We pride ourselves on the number of locally written plays and premieres that we produce annually and we're always happy to accept and train up anyone with an interest in theatre. Our " no experience necessary " motto means just that. After all, the more people we train up, the bigger the pool of talent we have to call on.
