    CAMINO THEATRE
At the San Diego College for Women, the Religious of the Sacred Heart, with their exquisite architectural vision, designed a beautiful campus in Spanish Renaissance style. One of those vision bacame Camino theatre. Mother Rossi considered Camino Theatre to be one of the finest elements of the college interior. She described some of the theatre's features as it appeared in 1952: The inauguration of the new theatre took place on December 14, 1952, with a Christmas pageant directed by Mother Sally Furay, R.S.C.J. and performed by students and small children. Other memorable events include the first commencement ceremony (June 1, 1954) and events for the golden jubilee of Mother Rosalie Hill, R.S.C.J. (February 10, 1957).
    SHILEY THEATRE
On November 12, 1996, Camino Theatre was rechristened Shiley Theatre. The new name honors Donald and Darlene Shiley for their support of The Globe/USD Master of Fine Arts Program, their commitment to undergraduate theatre performance and for two MFA program Fellowships made possible by the Donald and Darlene Shiley Endowment for Theatre Arts. During this time, Shiley Theatre was modernized for the new millennium and underwent a complete renovation, including sophisticated stage lighting, auditorium seating, air conditioning and other upgrades. In 1996 the final Presidential Debate between Senator Bob Dole and President Bill Clinton was nationally televised from Shiley Theatre. Today, Shiley Theatre is the cultural hub of USD Fine Arts activities in music and theatre.

Early in Dordt's history, drama was a cocurricular activity. Among the first public performances were Anne of Green Gables (1956) and Old Doc (1957) directed by Deborah Haan, the president's wife, and Luella Duistermars. Other early productions were directed by Nick Van Til and Bill Lothers. The Thalians drama club, formed during the 1961-62 school year at the urging of student Nolan Vander Ark and sponsorship of Merle Meeter, played an important role in the development of theatre at Dordt.

    Halifax Theatre History
Introduction: Theatre at the Pontac Halifax has long held the reputation as a great little theatre town, beginning “just 19 years after some soldiers and some miserable and sickly settlers had began to hack the garrison town out of the woods. The scarlet coats and gold braid of soldier-actors dominated the city’s earliest theatrical efforts." (Bruce 5) Through successive eras of turbulence and change, a town whose theatrical past extends from eighteenth-century garrison days, much may be revealed about Halifax’s rich social history in reviewing the nature and influences of dramatic activity that has occurred over time. Halifax’s early years witnessed an array of melodramas, farces, and comedies, typical fare of the period, put on by American and British touring companies and amateur efforts by the numerous of soldier-actors of the garrison town. Contributing to a community where “more than a hundred different plays, operas, and farces were presented in the last fifteen years of the 18 th Century," (Ferguson 419), the first known theatrical performance is preported, though some would disagree, at the Pontac Coffee House at the corner of Water and Prince Streets. As a venue for the town’s first play

... Contact Us History of Granada Theatre Granada Theatre was born in 1980, but it was in labor for about 22 years. It began at the Granada Hills Woman's Club, which Jo Erickson joined in 1956 because she was looking for an outlet for her training in live theatre at UCLA, and the club boasted a drama section. In 1958 she directed her first full length production, The Women , and raised money for the club's philanthropies. Subsequently, for a period of 20 years an annual production was presented as a fund raiser for the Woman's Club, with women playing all the roles and Jo directing. As the years passed, the number of attendees increased and men were added to the casts. Friends and supporters urged Jo to form a theatre with its own identity for Granada Hills. Once she was convinced to do so, a two year search ensued for a location. When all else failed, Jo found a solution in the Woman's Club itself. She approached the board of directors to sign a lease, renting to the theatre group, for five years, with the group paying the Woman's club the full amount of rent they were then collecting from an assortment of "one night stand" rentals. The Granada Theatre was formed by a select group of about 15 men and women who had been helpful in the past. They all donated what they could, ranging from $25 to $100. One fund raiser was held at the Woman's Club in the form of a revue, and $2,000 was raised. With that money the theatre was launched in 1980. Season tickets were sold at cocktail parties sponsored by theatre members in their homes. The first play of the newly formed Theatre, opening in February 1980, was Neil Simon's

Small but enthusiastic audiences attended the shows produced by local actors and students. Initially Thompson Theatre was to develop a professional repertory troupe of actors, adding four professionals each year until reaching twenty-four. The successful 1965-66 season included "The Glass Menagerie ,"produced with only professionals, and "The Private Life of the Master Race " and "Hedda Gabler ," which mixed students and local actors. This continued until 1967, when then-Governor Terry Sanford declared that the program would be self-sustaining as a non-academic function of the university, funded through receipts and paying costs from those funds. The professional troupe was abandoned and students and local actors produced the 1967-68 season. Red Bank - Circa 1926 A Town Full Of Theatres Adds One More
Even though there were already several other theatres in the Borough of Red Bank, New Jersey by 1925 (including the Strand, Palace, Empire and Lyric Theatres), on July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver had announced plans to build a theatre on Monmouth Street for a partnership of Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Co., and Walter Reade. Joseph Stern was already operating the Tivoli, Central, Plaza, Savoy and Regent Theaters in Newark, the Castle Theater in Irvington, the Lincoln Theater in Bloomfield, the Capitol Theater in Belleville and the Grand and Casino Theaters in Kearney. Walter Reade, for whom the Walter Reade Theatre at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City is now named, was already New Jersey's largest theatre owner, with ownership or an interest in thirty-one other venues in the state.
Projected to open eight months later on April 1, 1926, the new theatre would have seating for about 2,000 persons and be equipped for moving pictures, vaudeville and dramatic shows. The ninety foot by one hundred and ten foot theatre would include a wide lobby on Monmouth Street flanked by two storefronts, and a stage entrance for scenery via a ten-foot wide strip of land around the corner on Pearl Street. The noted theatre architect Thomas W. Lamb was reported to be drawing the plans for the new building, with an exterior of white terra cotta, and an interior finished in Old Gold and Red. The property and the rights of way for the land were purchased for $21,000, and the projected construction cost was $300,000 to $500,000.

    Theatre History
A prominent feature of the 1927 Detroit Institute of Arts building is the 1200 seat auditorium, originally designed by Paul Philippe Cret as a venue for film, lectures and live stage performances. Now regarded as one of the most important architects of large-scale American civil engineering projects during the early 20th century, Cret was fluent in both modern as well as neoclassic styles. He was also a pioneering industrial designer, whose visionary Burlington Zephyr streamliner locomotive is now on permanent display inside the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. For the DIA Auditorium Cret collaborated with Detroit architect C. Howard Crane, designer of several lavish Detroit theatres of the 1920s such as the Fox. The auditorium combines Cret's elegant sense of space and occasion with Crane's theater engineering sophistication. Innovative elements of the auditorium include ceiling and walls that were designed around the extensive pipes and bellows of a classical organ built by the Cassavant Freres of Montreal. The mezzanine level Crystal Gallery reception space features a two-story, vaulted gallery with floor to ceiling crystal reflecting walls on either end. Many decorative elements, such as the wrought iron interior grilles by Samuel Yellin and colorful fountains and terra-cotta tiles along the staircase from Detroit's Pewabic Pottery, represent the highest level of American craftsmanship from the era.
