31. Atlantic Canada Theatre Site - Ball And Plant Bibliography Of Canadian Drama
Bibliography of theatre history in Canada The Beginnings Through 1984 (Bibliographie D Histoire de Théâtre au Canada des Débuts fin 1984)
http://www.lib.unb.ca/Texts/Theatre/Bib/
Canadian Theatre History - Bibliographies The foundation of a Canadian Drama bibliography can be found in one volume published by ECW Press in 1993: Since 1993, John Ball and Richard Plant have added annual updates to their original work. These updates have been included in the newsletter of the Association for Canadian Theatre Research. The search engine on this site contains the (roughly) 16,000 entries of both the original Ball and Plant bibliography, and the subsequent annual updates. Permission to make data from the original publication available was kindly granted by the publisher, ECW Press . Of necessity, this search engine follows the electronic structure behind that original volume, which means it has proved impossible to separate elements of the individual dates sufficiently to allow a precisely chronological search engine printout. Each entry from the original bibliography is cited with the reference number assigned to it in that volume. Search the ACTS Bibliography

Page 1 of 1 In the world of sterile, cookie-cutter multiplex theatres it's refreshing to find a company that cares about the past. A company that understands the importance of history and preserving our landmarks. A company that looks at the moviegoing experience as more than just ticket sales but as an experience to be remembered and treasured. At Classic Cinemas, we are that company. Our theatres occupy historical buildings throughout the Chicago area. When these buildings were acquired by Classic Cinemas many were in states of disrepair. We've spent countless hours restoring them to their original splendor, often preserving as much of the original architecture as possible. The result are unique movie theatres unlike any you will find. Theatres that echo of the golden age of moviegoing and invoke memories of days gone past. But don't let the package fool you. All of our theatres are equipped with the very latest in sound and projection technology. The result is comfortable, modern moviegoing experience that is truly unique. THEATRE HISTORY At the turn of the Century, a boarding house once stood where the Raymond Theatre stands today. The land was later sold to the Pasadena Odd Fellows where a billboard stood on the property for many years. Between 1918 and 1919 the land was sold to The Jensen Theatre Corporation as the new site for Jensen's Raymond Theatre. Jensen's Raymond Theatre project was announced to the press in late 1919 and the groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 10th of that year. The Jensen Theatre Corporation included prominent Pasadenians BO Kendall, Henry C. Jensen, Willis M. Eason, LA Parmele, LH Turner and Henry D. Meyer. The Raymond Theatre was designed by notable Pasadena architect Cyril Bennett (1891-1957). The majority of construction took place between 1920 and 1921, supervised by Pasadena contractor William Crowell. The Raymond was the built in a rare Adams and Beaux Arts style, with indoor fountains, spiral ramps leading to the mezzanine, orchestra balconies and intricate auditorium and lobby detail. In 1919, The Jensen Theatre Corporation also purchased the vacant lot south of the theatre, which was described as an "auto park," a function this parcel still retains to this day.

Melvyn Douglas dies today at the age of 80. Born in Macon, Georgia as Melvyn Edouard Heselberg, Douglas went on to become one of the more accomplished stage actors of his generation. Among his New York theatre credits were Time Out For Ginger The Best Man and Inherit the Wind . Douglas’ performances in "Hud" and “Being There” earned him Academy Awards for best supporting actor. Charles Dickens' unfinished novel becomes The Mystery of Edwin Drood , a musical by Rupert Holmes at Off-Broadway's Delacorte Theatre. The play-within-a-play adaptation is performed by a cast including Betty Buckley, Judy Kuhn and Donna Murphy, who play members of a troupe that is performing the show. The show will transfer to Broadway's Imperial Theatre later in the season and run for 608 performances, eventually changing its title to simply Drood Denzel Washington makes his Broadway debut in the comedy Checkmates with Ruby Dee and Paul Winfield. Sex . It's a comedy. Mae West plays a Canadian woman with no time for those mountees; it's the British navy for her. It runs through one season, but the following it is raided as immoral. The cast is arrested and West, who also co-produced, is sentenced to 10 days in jail and is fined $500. When West is released from prison after only eight days, she memorably tells the press, "It's the first time I ever got anything for good behavior." A well-received off-off-Broadway revival in 2000 proved that the show still had laughs and a unique social point of view. Comden and Green supply the lyrics to Jule Styne's music for Hallelujah, Baby! . Leslie Uggams plays a woman who never grows old. Arthur Laurents penned the book. Burt Shevelove stages the 293 performances. There's a book by George Furth, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Harold Prince helming, Michael Bennett on hand to choreograph, and Elaine Stritch in the lead; who wouldn't want to be in that Company ? There will be 705 performances at Broadway's Alvin Theatre. Boyd Gaines, Veanne Cox and La Chanze will later star in a Roundabout Theatre Broadway revival.

Designed by renowned San Francisco architect Timothy L. Pflueger and completed in late 1931, it was one of the first Depression-era buildings to incorporate and integrate the work of numerous creative artists into its architecture and is particularly noteworthy for its successful orchestration of the various artistic disciplines into an original and harmonious whole.
Construction was initiated by Publix Theatres, the exhibiting organization of Paramount Pictures. Although financial difficulties forced the sale of the uncompleted building to Fox-West Coast Theatres, the firm that completed the theatre and operated it until it closed on September 15, 1970, the name "Paramount" was retained.
After its initial brief blaze of "movie palace" glory in the 1930's, this remarkable auditorium suffered three decades of neglect and decline until its rescue by the Oakland Symphony, the City of Oakland and numerous private donors. The building was purchased by the Board of Directors of the Oakland Symphony Orchestra Association in 1972. A painstaking and
