O'Reilly Theater: Public 'pioneer' happy with her longtime behind-the-scenes role Sunday, December 05, 1999 By Christopher Rawson, Post-Gazette Drama Editor From her new office in the O'Reilly Theater, Cynthia Tutera overlooks the same alley she used to see from her 1976 Public Theater office in the Fulton Building. "Talk about a step up," she cracks, "this has been a step around." More significantly, she points out, the Public "has been half my life" almost literally so, since later this month she turns 50. Cindy Tutera, 1999. (Bill Wade - Post-Gazette) Now the general manager of administration and finance, Tutera is the only Public staff member who remains from those early days, and she started as a volunteer even earlier than that. If there's a third Founding Mother along with Margaret Rieck and Joan Apt, Cindy Tutera is it. She met Joan and Jerry Apt when, barely out of school, she was working at the Pittsburgh Symphony, doing finance and general accounting. It was a natural step when about 1971 she switched over to Jerry Apt's engineering firm as assistant treasurer. That was on Centre Avenue, where in 1974 Rieck, Joan Apt and Ben Shaktman borrowed office space for the embryonic theater company. Her relationship with the theater started with "little questions Ben would come in to ask me more as friendship than anything. Then Ben called in 1976 and asked if I knew anyone to be his business manager. No one came to mind, so I thought, 'What about me?' Joan, Jerry and I were good friends, so Jerry thought it was a great opportunity for me, if Ben held my hand. ... We held hands the whole way, Ben and I, through some very long nights. He's a very driven man. He taught me everything I know about management.

A Life's Work
By Michael Coveney The little boy with the big brown eyes became the most famous British musical theater composer of the 20th century.
He played the piano, he blew the French horn, he wrote his own tunes from the age of six.
Pursued by demons, and possessed by the promise of fame, he struck out from an intensely musical upbringing into the wide green pastures of showbusiness glory. In the dressing room. His father was a failed composer but distinguished musician, his mother a dedicated and socially eccentric teacher, his brother, Julian, a future star of the world classical music stage as a virtuoso cellist.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, as thoroughly English as Vaughan Williams, Edward Elgar and Benjamin Britten, would rewrite the agenda for British popular music in the latter half of the twentieth century.
And he changed the theater forever. Lloyd Webber was born on March 22, 1948, in London, England, and attended the nearby Westminster School, where he was an outstanding pupil. He always wrote music in preference to doing his piano practice, and was soon writing school revues and songs. His favorite Aunt Vi took him to West End shows, and he and his brother Julian built their own model theater at home. He now stands at the apex of his fame, the most celebrated composer of musical theater in the world and the most successful of the century. He has achieved this through a combination of talent, hard work, and sheer determination. From his teens, he had a passion for Giacomo Puccini and Richard Rodgers and wanted to emulate his heroes by writing music for the theater.

Behind the scenes, technical artists make shows happen
By Anna Abramson Published: Friday, November 19, 2004 Media Credit: Nick Neely
Technical theater artists at Brown might not be visible on stage, but the final product of their labor is anything but invisible. These students are responsible for sets, sound, design, costume, props, lighting, stage managing and much more. Technical artists say it is logical that their work should occur in the background, because they aim not to highlight their own technical work but to use that work to illuminate the director's vision for the show.
Adam Immerwahr '05, who has been involved in numerous projects, including directing, stage managing and acting, said that the better behind-the-scenes work is, the less the audience will notice it.

MANAGING THE COMPLEX Anderson's man behind the scenes Michael Heafey assures smooth operations
BY PHILIP LITTLE
UCLA Today His name is not up in lights, but Michael Heafey is definitely at center stage.
Yet as early as high school, Heafey aspired to be an actor. He came to UCLA in 1969 as an acting major, but soon gravitated backstage where he discovered a love for lighting, sound and scenic design. While still a student he began working at Royce Hall, where he developed his production skills. After receiving his degree in theater in 1975, Heafey took a job in facilities maintenance at a local junior college while maintaining a part-time position at UCLA. Two years later, he returned full-time to UCLA and to his first love: theater. For the next 14 years, Heafey worked at Royce Hall, first as a stagehand, then as technical director/production supervisor, and finally as assistant director for theater production. In 1996, Heafey joined The Anderson School, where he supervises a staff of nine and is responsible for the general operation of the complex and the safety and comfort of its occupants. He oversees office space design, construction and alteration, facilities access and security, event support and mail delivery, among other things.

WINNER OF THE 2005 TONY® AWARD FOR BEST MUSICAL! From the twisted mind of Eric Idle comes this musical adaptation of the hilarious 1975 film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, starring Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce, 2005 Tony-winner Sara Ramirez. Telling the legendary tale of the Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail, this new musical features a chorus line of dancing divas and knights, flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits and one legless knight, all under the direction of the brilliant Mike Nichols. According to Idle himself, the show is “as good as or quite likely better than any other show with killer rabbits and a legless knight opening on Broadway this season.” Tickets More Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Two suave conmen swindle wealthy women in this riotously funny new musical.
