Birthing the Baby - A behind-the-scenes look at the making of the new musical BABY CASE Philadelphia City Paper: June 29, 2000
By Steve Cohen Monday, June 12. On this hot and humid morning 17 singer-actors gather around a long table in the cavernous, third-floor rehearsal studio at the Arden Theatre Company. They are assembling for a workshop - a private tryout - of a new musical, Baby Case, about the media hype that surrounded the trial of Bruno Hauptmann for the kidnap and murder of the Lindbergh baby in 1932. Most are in T-shirts, shorts and sandals. There are two noticeable exceptions. Vince DiMura wears a long-sleeve purple shirt, psychedelic vest, black pants and shoes, his long, dark brown hair pulled into a braid. "You can always tell the musician," says Terrence Nolen, producing artistic director of the Arden. Nolen himself looks more yuppie than theater, with his buttoned, long-sleeved striped shirt hanging loose over khaki pants. Nolen greets the group while his assistant passes out scripts, music, Equity contracts, tax forms and the schedule: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., six days a week for two weeks. Nolen tells the cast his company has been doing one musical a year since it was founded by him, Aaron Posner and Nolen’s wife, Amy Murphy, 12 years ago. "But this will be our first world premiere musical. They’re much more expensive than straight plays because we have to pay more royalties, hire musicians, a musical director, choreographer and so on... So it’s a big and expensive risk. That’s why we decided we should have a workshop, to see how it plays. We applied for and got a grant from the Independence Foundation to pay for this and other workshops here. Now let’s tap the spine of this piece."

Behind the scenes
YOUNGSTERS have got their teeth into seeing the theatre from behind the scenes.
The First Bite group, for 11 to 14 year olds, is a workshop for the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester which demonstrates to enthusiastic youngsters aged 11 to 14 the ins and outs of stage production work.
They experience the unseen secrets of putting on plays - the details which make a performance possible.
The group aims to show the magic of theatre and encourage interest in the workings of the stage.
The show under scrutiny was Secret Heart, the Royal Exchange's seasonal family production, adapted by Amanda Dalton from the David Almond novel.
After the First Bite sessions, at the theatre's rehearsal premises in Swan Street, in the city's northern quarter, Amanda said: "The workshops give a real insight into the production. It was of interest to the youngsters because it's the story of a boy who is a sort of misfit whose qualities are recognised when he gets involved with magical elements of a circus which comes to town."

The Real Deadwood
Executive producer David Milch warns that Deadwood is not a docu-drama about the famed outlaw town. "I want to make it clear," he says, "that I've had my ass bored off by many things that are historically accurate."
That said, Milch spent months immersing himself in the true stories of the people of 19th century Deadwood, absorbing not just the events, but also the subtle motivations behind them. "I like to read the primary materials; I love reading the Black Hills Pioneer, you know," he says. "I could read that all day. I'm interested in the personalities who were kind of the first prime movers in the community."
With an eye toward a political career and even a presidential run, Custer organized support for a 1,000-man expedition into the Black Hills. "A lot of people were broke. There was a panic in 1873, and migrations of people." Milch says. "There were all kinds of social disruptions going on, and into this foment, you stir in Custer's personal ambitions.
"Now for years and years there had been rumors that there was gold in the Black Hills. But what would become the Dakota Territory was owned by the Sioux 'for as long as the river shall run' according to the treaty signed six years before. So Custer says, let me ascertain the scientific content about the mineral deposits in the hills. And the guys in the Senate who wanted to run Custer for president authorized the expedition. Custer gets 25 photographers, reporters from the New York Times. It's a media event."

Teens get behind-the-scenes view of theater Angela Carter , Register Staff 07/19/2003 NEW HAVEN — Terrell "T-Money" McNeil and Andrew "The Magnificent" Henry are finding out that producing a play is harder than they thought. McNeil, 16, and Henry, 15, are in a group of 18 city teens learning the behind-the-scenes skills of musical and dramatic stage productions as part of the first ARTS @ WORK Summer Technical Theatre Institute. "We’re learning how to build sets and how to be costume designers," said Takiya Boyd, 17. That’s in addition to training in lighting, makeup, props and stage management and marketing. "I’m also learning the origins of theater," McNeil said. But their lessons are not academic. The youths literally are learning on the job. They are the technical crew for the play "like sun fallin’ in the mouth," the work of Yale School of Drama playwright Marcus Gardley, who is in Atlanta this week attending the National Black Arts Festival. The play will be performed next week at the African American Cultural Center at Yale, 211 Park St., and again next month during the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Behind the scenes The Arizona Republic Aug. 29, 2004 12:00 AM Arizona Theatre Company has emerged as one of the nation's leading regional theaters. One reason is David Ira Goldstein , artistic director since 1992. A master at programming, Goldstein, 51, mixes comedy and drama, new works and classics, keeping ATC's 18,000 subscribers in Phoenix and Tucson in a state of theatrical euphoria. It helps that Goldstein also is a brilliant director. Whether it's Two Gentlemen of Verona or My Fair Lady , he delivers lavish productions that challenge the intellect while overwhelming the senses. The only problem? Word is spreading. This year, at least two out-of-state companies made unsuccessful attempts to lure him to their stages. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd') Kathy Hotchner's feisty style is just the ticket for the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. As vice president of programming since 1988 and, since last season, as director of the center, she has turned SCA into a premier spot to catch the best and latest in performing arts.

Behind the Scenes Bridget Shea: Making Large-Format Theaters and Planetariums Accessible
My Background and Current Work

As I earned my undergraduate and graduate degrees in human communications, I worked in a planetarium. I found my training in human communications crucial to my work because it gave me insight about how to communicate with diverse groups of people. Immediately after college, I moved to Baltimore to produce planetarium programs at the Maryland Science Center. I wrote scripts, engineered soundtracks, built special effects, managed production staff, and programmed shows. I did some work for the large-format theater as well; specifically, I created pre-announcements, post-announcements, and slide shows. Believing that providing accessible services was the right thing to do, the museum began to caption its planetarium programs and large-format films. The Need for Accessible Services
My experiences in two museums show how I came to realize the need for accessible services in museum planetariums and large-format theaters.

Light, costume and set designers enhance Calvin theater
By Roxanne Rupke Van Farowe '97 Imagine yourself as an audience member watching the best play you have ever seen. The stage makes you believe that you, yourself, are a part of the world before you. At any moment you feel that you, like the actors, could step beyond the scene into other rooms and places that you can fully imagine. But do you notice the scenery, the props, the costumes or the lighting? Not really. Whether by choice or involuntarily the imaginary world engulfs you, and you believe it entirely. "The art of set design is at its highest when it is not noticed," said communications professor James Korf, a long-time set designer. "Instead (audience members) have to think about what is happening. They are overwhelmed." In fact, ".If someone says 'great costumes,' or 'did you see those lights?' that's a bad thing," Korf added. "Those impressions should all happen on a non-verbal level."

Behind the Scenes of Beauty and the Beast
It's business as usual for Seaside Music Theater, Florida's premiere professional musical theatre, as they prepare for yet another quality production to hit the stage during the summer season. However, everyone is just a tad more nervous this time around, as the show they are preparing for is the Florida regional premiere of Disney's Beauty and the Beast — a lavish spectacle larger than any production SMT has attempted to date. Seaside Music Theater was formed in 1977 by Tippen Davidson, his daughter Julia (Truilo, the company's managing director and also a performer) and a few other ambitious individuals who saw the importance and need for theatre in the Daytona Beach area. In the twenty-seven years since that first season, SMT has grown to become one of the most respected companies, not only in Florida, but in the United States as well. Seaside was selected as one of the first five theatres in the United States to be granted permission to perform Beauty and the Beast , just as they were with Miss Saigon in 2001. Even
