Theater is a collaborative art form used by humans around the world and throughout time to communicate ideas, to perform for each other and entertain, to teach lessons, and to tell wonderful stories. Children have an inherent interest in theatre and usually considerable personal experience making theatre in their living rooms and backyards. Children are particularly fascinated by the behind the scenes elements of theater. They want to know who makes the magic of theatre happen, and how all of the people involved do what they do. Children also want to try out the myriad of behind the scene roles for themselves. Onstage and Behind the Scenes brings the magic of theatre to life for visitors by both answering their most asked questions and engaging their participation in this art form. Onstage and Behind the Scenes provides an overview study of the basic elements of theatre.

In May, the Russians are coming. Next year, the stage is set for ancient Greece.
The Russians are a case in point. AU will soon play host to a theatre troupe with a long name and even longer history. The Russian State Fyodor Volkov Academic Drama Theatre Troupe traces its ancestry all the way back to 1750, when it was founded by an actor known as the father of Russian theatre. The drama troupe still makes its home in Yaroslavl on the River Volga, north of Moscow.

... The 10 Best Showbiz Movies
Read Advice Write an essay on this topic. Behind-the-Scenes: Film, Theatre, and Television

The Bottom Line Often fascinating, backstage films run the gamut from muscial to melodrama, farce to weeper. Tbey have existed as long as the pictures have themselves.
The movies enjoy telling stories about themselves, the theatre world, and the land of television. Some of the most memorable Hollywood flicks have been about the backstage workings of these professions. Here are the ten best:
ALL ABOUT EVE-Bette Davis is stage star Margo Channing and Anne Baxter is the cutthroat Eve Harrington who will do anything to steal the spotlight from her in this classic flick.
THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL-Movie star Georgia Lorrison, talented director Fred Amiel, and screenwriter J. L. Bartlow reminsice on the effect producer Jonathan Sheilds had on their careers in this biting inside Hollywood drama.
THE GREAT ZIEGFELD-The 'true' story of theatrical impressario Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. won the 1936 Oscar for Best Picture. Its behind the scene glimpse of early Broadway is wonderful. Countless production numbers and over three-hundred showgirls, not to mention drop dead wonderful Luise Rainer as Anna Held in an Oscar-winning performance.
BOMBSHELL-Jean Harlow, in a role that is painfully close to her real life, plays a movie star whose life is controlled and manipulated by those around her. A brilliant comedy, possibly Harlow's finest hour in her short career, but poignant and sad if one looks beyond the surface.

'Miracle' worker key to stage's success

BY CHRISTINE DOLEN
cdolen@herald.com William Gibson wrote the play The Miracle Worker. Barbara Stein lives its title.
When Shear Madness opens Friday at Actors' Playhouse in the Miracle Theatre, art (well, a raucous interactive murder mystery set in a hair salon) will wait in the wings as Stein does her thing, as she has before every opening since her company moved into the Miracle nearly 10 years ago.
The chic, just-turned-60 executive producing director will stand center stage in the spotlight, thanking everyone for being there
.Then, one by one, she'll call the show's donors up to the stage to receive a plaque, a hug and an opening-night photo, expressing her gratitude for what each one has done to help make Actors' one of the biggest success stories in South Florida theater over the past decade.
Yet her many admirers would tell you that the biggest ''thanks'' should go to Stein herself.'

Rehearsals, open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. on April 3-8 and 7:30 p.m. on April 10-13. At rehearsals for the Nevada Repertory Company's production of Macbeth , the mood is casual but purposeful. Actresses in fleece jackets and sweatpants, hair pulled back in ponytails, prowl around the newly constructed set, finding their places and testing out the ramps. Swaggering across the bare, brightly lit stage, they boom their lines in deep voices and grip each other's arms firmly in "man-shakes," in imitation of the warriors and noblemen they're playing. Crotches are grabbed. What's a bunch of nice ladies like them doing in a place like this? It's all part of "A Gender Bender Semester" at the University of Nevada, Reno. The semester began with

It's hard to look at the list of events for this weekend's Behind the Scenes festival, presented by the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia (TAGP), and not let out a "wow." For one day, more than 30 theater companies, many with sharply divergent missions, styles and seasons, will come together to represent Philly theater for the community. Each company is presenting a different activity, most relating in some way to the company's current production. You can check out the set and lighting schemes for the Wilma's Indian Ink or take a Japanese Noh workshop with Greg Giovanni, who's currently directing Azuka Theatre Collective's Friends . You can tawk with the folks at Philadelphia Theatre Co. and see an excerpt from their upcoming show Barbra's Wedding . (It'll be like buttah, I'm sure.) Pig Iron's Dito van Reigersberg and Quinn Bauriedel will lead a session on creating physical characters; there are improv opportunities from ComedySportz, Playback Philadelphia or LunchLady Doris; Brat Productions is opening up a rehearsal of
