Imagine Me at the First Thanksgiving Unit: Thanksgiving Grade: Kindergarten Objective : The students will imagine what they think the First Thanksgiving was like and then draw a picture of themselves at the First Thanksgiving for a class book. Materials Imagine by Alison Lester -white construction paper -crayons Procedure 1. Ask the students some review questions about the First Thanksgiving. As a class discuss key points of it. 2. Ask the children if they know what the word imagine means. Listen and respond to several suggestions. 3. Read the story Imagine to the class. Before each page have them imagine in their minds what they think each of the different places looks like. Discuss how the picture in their minds might differ from the picture in the book. Discuss how we can be a different person or be in a different place if we use our imaginations. 4. Do a simple relaxation procedure, such as relaxing each part of their body. Then have the children close their eyes and imagine what they think the First Thanksgiving was like. Describe to them some things they might see, such as a table, food, Pilgrims and Indians. After they have a picture of the First Thanksgiving, have the class imagine themselves there. Are they a pilgrim or an Indian? What are they doing?

The contribution of American Indians and Alaska Natives to American life reflects a long heritage, which includes the wide-spread use of Indian words that name geographic places in this nation. American Indians and Alaska Natives maintain their tribal traditions, religion, and languages. At the same time, they strive to assimilate modern technologies. Nonetheless, many students in American schools know comparatively little about the native populations of their own country. This Digest gives teachers realistic information about this growing population. It identifies some of the common myths about American Indians and Alaska Natives that contribute to curriculum bias. The concluding discussion suggests activities and resources to help elementary studentsand their teachersunderstand the realities of how Indians live today and how they lived in the past. THE ROLE OF ACCURATE INFORMATION Bias about Indians is often the result of inaccurate information. The realities of American Indian and Alaskan Native life are often oversimplified and distorted. Stylized classroom accounts of Indian life reinforce the "buckskin and feather" and the "Eskimo and igloo" stereotypes (Madison School District, 1978). Global Change Teachings For The New Millennium Having Faith, Hope, and Thanksgiving in the Midst of Realism on a Suffering World November 24, 2002 to members and guests of Aquarian Concepts Community at a Sunday CosmoService Last Sunday I had a conversation with a man and woman who have spent decades in the public school system, giving of their love, energy, and talents. As I conversed with them and listened to their expressions of disappointment, disenchantment, and exhaustion, I was reminded of my own experiences as a highly motivated teacher who gave my creativity and inspiration to the students I loved. When I graduated from college and returned to the San Carlos Apache reservation to teach, I was full of enthusiasm, hope, and expectations. Like this couple I retained my idealism and optimism for many years, thinking that great changes could happen for my students as long as I inspired them with my great teaching and encouraged them with my genuine love for them. Like this couple I grew exhausted and frustrated. A friend of mine who just retired after a thirty-year career as a history teacher recently expressed to me his extreme disappointment in the public school system. Though he enjoyed the interaction with his students and was considered one of the more outstanding teachers in the school, he chose to take early retirement because he could no longer work in a system that he believes has become corrupt and defunct.
