Thanksgiving sans thanks to God
Fox News reports that here in my new homestate of Maryland our public school students celebrated Thanksgiving with studies on the history and meaning of Thanksgiving. Young students across [Maryland] read stories about the Pilgrims and Native Americans, simulate Mayflower voyages, hold mock feasts and learn about the famous meal that temporarily allied two very different groups.
But what teachers don't mention when they describe the feast is that the Pilgrims not only thanked the Native Americans for their peaceful three-day indulgence, but repeatedly thanked God.
"We teach about Thanksgiving from a purely historical perspective, not from a religious perspective," said Charles Ridgell, St. Mary's County Public Schools curriculum and instruction director.

November 21, 2000 During this Thanksgiving holiday week in the U.S., we were moved to compile these ideas and links for bringing gratitude and thanksgiving into our lives every day. William Faulkner Did you know that 8 nations have official Thanksgiving holidays and scores more put on festivals of thanksgiving? ANYONE BUT GOD:
Students Free to Thank Anybody, Except God (Laurel Lundstrom, November 22, 2004, Fox News)
Maryland public school students are free to thank anyone they want while learning about the 17th century celebration of Thanksgiving — as long as it's not God. And that is how it should be, administrators say. Young students across the state read stories about the Pilgrims and Native Americans, simulate Mayflower voyages, hold mock feasts and learn about the famous meal that temporarily allied two very different groups. School administrators statewide agree, saying religion never coincides with how they teach Thanksgiving to students.

and receive classroom activities and news about science supplies. Extra Credit for Thanksgiving This tip shows you how to offer some extra credit mixed with a little family interaction. It probably stems from many of my own family’s Thanksgivings. When we’re together at Thanksgiving, Mom and I do the turkey and stuffing, and every other family member also contributes to the meal in some way. I call this tip the “Be glad you’re not a turkey!” extra credit.
Here’s how it works. I give my students extra credit for helping plan, cook, set the table for, and clean up after the Thanksgiving meal. Since I teach math and science, I have each student bring in a 3 x 5” recipe card with measures and cooking directions (time and temperature) for the dish he or she prepared. Parents also sign off on what the student helped with at home. This activity can link class work to students helping at home, thereby bringing math and science into the real world. Anyone who has ever tried to prepare a Thanksgiving meal can tell you about the considerable time, measurement, planning, and food safety precautions involved.

By Robert Redding Jr.
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. said yesterday that the state does not bar teachers from addressing the religious aspects of the Thanksgiving holiday, taking issue with a recent report by the Capital News Service.
"It simply was a misreport," Mr. Ehrlich said during an interview on WTOP Radio. "That is not the case. ... It is not the policy of the state of Maryland."
The article also quoted school administrators from several counties who said they do not include religious matter in their curriculums. None of the persons quoted said the state had directed the schools to exclude the teaching of religion.
However, Mr. Ehrlich criticized the article, saying it reported that the state has set the local school districts' curriculums.
"I have checked with my education folks [and] that is not accurate at all," the Republican governor said. "Obviously, curric- ulum issues are local in nature. Local school boards have a lot of input in curriculum issues."

SUBJECT: Thanksgiving letter home from an SM AUTHOR: Marius Asaftei, a Student Missionary of Romanian heritage from Southern Adventist University, spent 10 months as an ADRA volunteer teacher in the jungles of Guyana, South America. Dear family, It's Thanksgiving Day here in Paruima, and since I have some free time and some battery in the computer, I want to let you know how I'm doing. David Gates is flying into Paruima in about two weeks, but I will be in the final exams week, so I won't have that much time to write. It was good to hear your voice on the radio. We were praying for a successful trip to Romania, and I know that your trip was more than successful. I've been thinking about the family there, and the many friends that I have in Romania. I was kind of melancholic about it for a while, but then gave it to the Lord, because it was distracting me from my work. Please send me detailed news from Romania, and how everybody is doing. It will really make me happy! Our group of volunteersour family for one year.

Because my Indian ancestors were on both sides of the struggle between the Puritans and the New England Indians and I am well versed in my cultural heritage and history both as an Anishnabeg (Algokin) and Hodenosione (Iroquois), it was felt that I could bring a unique insight to the project.
