What are Some Good Thanksgiving Crafts? Thanksgiving crafts can bring your family together and decorate your home for autumn. Setting some time aside to consider falling leaves, harvest foods, wild turkeys, Pilgrims, and Native Americans will allow you to enjoy the holiday of cornucopias and feeling grateful. Some craft ideas are simple and safe enough for kids to do alone. Others can be sophisticated and gorgeous, appealing to parents and adults. A pinecone turkey centerpiece is a classic children’s Thanksgiving craft. Easy and inexpensive, this project results in a personalized and striking decoration. Gather a pinecone that has opened slightly, an acorn or walnut, and construction paper. Have your child trace her hand on yellow, orange, red, and brown construction paper five to seven times. She can probably cut out the shapes herself. Stick these "feathers" near the rear of the pinecone with a daub of glue. With a tiny wattle of red construction paper, and markered eyes, the nut transforms into a turkey head, glued into place with a hot-glue gun. Not only will you have a beautiful centerpiece for Thanksgiving dinner, you can save the feathers as a reminder of the size of your child’s hands that year. Another Thanksgiving craft creates autumnal tealight candleholders out of gourds and fruit. These can line a mantle or cluster on a table. Collect squashes, fruits, and gourds you find appealing. Best are those of vibrant colors and burnished textures, such as apples, acorn squash, miniature pumpkins, or ornamental gourds that balance upright. Using a tealight as a stencil, draw a rough circle at the top of each vegetable. Then carve a cylinder down the center to make a space for the candle. Lit tealights will make the gourds glow beautifully. Even fancier, the apples and small pumpkins will float in a large bowl of water or barrel, bringing romantic light outdoors as well.

If your students ask similar questions, try the WebQuest designed by Karen Pippin. Fill in the blanks for a "gut busting" Thanksgiving story from National Geographic Kids Thanksgiving Timeline - The story of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag begins before the Thanksgiving feast. Relive the Pilgrims' first year in America, and learn how the Wampanoag helped them survive in the New World. Take a tour of the tiny ship that brought the pilgrims to the new world, compliments of Scholastic. You might also take a look at a cross-section of the Mayflower (unless you have claustrophobia). Would you like to go on a virtual turkey hunt. He is hiding somewhere on the page. Go there to hunt and click, see if you can find him. (Try some wrong answers. They are fun!) Did the Pilgrims celebrate Thanksgiving every year? Find out the answer to that and more at Common Mayflower Myths.

Craft has been used as a verb since the Old English period and was used in Middle English to refer specifically to the artful construction of a text or discourse. In recent years, crafted, the past participle of craft, has enjoyed a vogue as a participle referring to well-wrought writing. Craft is more acceptable when applied to literary works than to other sorts of writing, and more acceptable as a participle than as a verb. Seventy-three percent of the Usage Panel accepts the phrase beautifully crafted prose. By contrast, only 35 percent accept the sentence The planners crafted their proposal so as to anticipate the objections of local businesses.

      A Child's Thanksgiving Tree
http://familycorner.com Just mentioning the word "thanksgiving" often conjures up memories for many. Traditions are relived and new ones are born on this joyous family holiday. Why not start a new one with your children with this fun and simple activity. To make your own Thanksgiving Tree you will need the following:
      Materials:
      sheet of white poster board
      pencil
      tempera paint, markers or crayons
construction paper in red, yellow, green and orange
      markers
      scissors
      glue or tape
glitter glue (optional) Variation: This project can also be easily adapted to a cork board (see photo) by simply using colored push pins to match the leaves. Use brown construction paper to make the tree trunk. You may draw the tree trunk freehand or print out our template by clicking here: family/leisure/thankstree.shtml At the top of the posterboard, entitle your tree "smith kids thanksgiving tree", inserting your family surname in the title. With a pencil on poster board, draw a basic tree with a branch for each child in the family. If you only have 1-2 children, it might be fun to include two or three branches for each child.
