Fiery hot curries, slippery rice noodles, soothing lemon grass, tangy green papaya these are just some of the wide range of flavors that permeate the former kingdom of Siam. Over the years, the mountainous north, long isolated from the rest of the country, developed its own native culture with a language, crafts and customs as different from those of central Thailand as is Portugal from Spain, and is heavily influenced by its neighbors Burma and Laos. The southern jungles and coastlines offer coconuts, cashews, pineapples, seafood and crustaceans to its millions of Muslims and Malaysian-influenced peoples. In between, rice, guavas, cucumbers and other foods are reaped from the central region's paddy fields, orchards and vegetable gardens. THAILAND THAI RECIPES

    Magazine apologizes to Thailand
Journalists Rodney Tasker (left) and Shawn Crispin BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) The Far Eastern Economic Review magazine has apologized to Thailand for an article that provoked police to order the expulsion of two of its reporters. The apology is expected to help end a dispute that had seen Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's government sharply criticized at home and abroad for attempting to curtail press freedom in one of Asia's most liberal democracies. A lawyer for the Hong Kong-based magazine delivered a letter addressed to National Assembly president Uthai Pimchaichon apologizing for any offense caused by an article, which alleged tension between King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Thaksin. "It was never the intention of the Far Eastern Economic Review to write or generate any adverse commentary concerning Thailand's highest institution and if our issue of January 10 has been so interpreted, we most sincerely apologize for it," said the letter.

    Cambodians storm Thai embassy

BANGKOK, Thailand Described as the "first step to normalizing bilateral ties," Thailand will send a delegation to Cambodia to assess the damage caused by recent anti-Thai riots that devastated relations between the two countries. The officials are set to leave Bangkok on Tuesday and will inspect the destruction caused by rioting mobs that stormed and torched the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, on Wednesday. The rioters also torched or vandalized hotels and other Thai-owned business. The rampage forced Thailand to evacuate more than 700 citizens by military plane and plunged Cambodia into a diplomatic crisis with Thailand, with Bangkok closing its border with its eastern neighbor, downgrading ties and suspending economic cooperation. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has criticized his Cambodian counterpart for not doing enough to control the riots.
