Amnesty International A brief history Peter Benenson
(Real Video Clip) In 1961, London lawyer Peter Benenson read about a group of students in Portugal who were arrested and jailed for raising a toast to "freedom" in a public restaurant. This incident prompted him to launch a one-year campaign called " Appeal for Amnesty 1961 " in the London Observer, a local newspaper. The "Appeal for Amnesty" called for the release of all people imprisoned because of peaceful expression of their beliefs, politics, race, religion, color, or national origin. Benenson called these people, "prisoners of conscience." His plan was to encourage people to write letters to government officials in countries which had prisoners of conscience, calling for their release. The campaign grew enormously, spread to other countries, and by the end of 1961 the organization, Amnesty International, had been formed.

History of the ISE
The rapid development of Thailand's Eastern Seaboard created a demand for a high quality international school. In response to this demand, the International School Eastern Seaboard (ISE) was developed by Northbridge Communities and opened in August 1994. From a modest beginning that first year, the school grew to enroll more than 300 students in less than four years. The program offerings and facilities grew during this time to keep pace with the needs of our students and the expectations of the International community. The new upper campus, specially designed with high school students in mind, opened in January 1998. We are proud to serve the families of the entire Eastern Seaboard region from Chonburi to Rayong. The International School Eastern Seaboard (ISE) is an English language, coeducational, nonsectarian, college-preparatory day school, enrolling students from pre-kindergarten (3 and 4 year old students) through grade 12. The school provides a comprehensive academic program, including the core subject areas of math, science, social studies/history, and language arts/English, as well as foreign language study, English as a Second Language (ESL), physical education, fine and applied arts and an array of co-curricular activities. ISE strives to be a model of an American style school. All school program are designed to accommodate students from many nations, who come with variety of educational needs. The school is a full candidate for accreditation by the United States based Western Association of Schools and College (WASC).

History
The earliest civilisation in Thailand is believed to have been that of the Mons in central Thailand, who brought a Buddhist culture from the Indian subcontinent. In the 12th century, this met a Khmer culture moving from the east and the maritime Srivijaya culture moving north. Around the same period citizens of the Thai state of Nan Chao, in what is now southern China, migrated south. The Thai Nation as we know it today has its origins in the federation of this main ethnic groups. Thai Princes created the first Siamese capital in Sukhothai, later centres in Chiang Mai and, notably, Ayuthaya.
Burmese invaded Siam in both the 16th and 18th centuries, capturing Chiang Mai and destroying Ayuthaya.Thais expelled Burmese and moved their capital to Thonburi. In 1782, the current Chakri dynasty was founded by King Rama I and the capital was moved across the river to Bangkok.
In the 19th century, Siam remained independent by playing off one European power against another. In 1932, a peaceful coup converted the country into a constitutional monarchy, and in 1939 Siam became Thailand. During WW II, the Thai government allowed Japanese troops to occupy Thailand. After the war, Thailand was dominated by the military and experienced more than twenty coups and countercoups interspersed with short-lived experiments with democracy. Democratic elections in 1979 were followed by a long period of stability and prosperity as power shifted from the military to the business elite.

In 1957, a representative of the International Youth Hostels Federation called upon Lady Dusdi Malakul, the President of the Thai Women's Volunteer Association, and asked her to start a youth hostel project in Thailand.
The association reported the matter to the Ministry of Education and had their approval to start a youth hostel project under the auspices of the Women Volunteers Association. Under this project, two youth hostels were opened on January 2, 1960; one at Cholburi and another at Nakorn Nayok. In July of 1960, the Department of Highways allowed the youth hostel project to use two buildings on a hill near the Phra Buddha-Chaya Temple at Saraburi as the 3rd youth hostel in Thailand.
On June the 7th, 1961, the Youth Hostels Association of Thailand was registered as an independent body and the Ministry of Education agreed that the Children's Sala in Sanam Suapa be used as its headquarters. The name of the association is now the "Thai Youth Hostels Association".

Something "Different"
Crazy Ride On a Local Bus
Getting there from by road is not easy the local bus we boarded from Hat Yai to Nakhon Si Thammarat is an excellent experience in "rough travel" imagine getting squashed three person to a seat meant for two, with people standing for the entire four-hour ride, some hanging onto the bus doors for their dear lives. Now I can understand why the bus drive prayed for so long at the small shrine placed on the dashboard before the trip! He really needed divine interference to ensure the safety of all the passengers and himself. But after that four-hour ride, I learnt something about human kindness.
As we could not speak Thai, the conductor asked around the bus for someone who could speak English to find out where to drop us off. Then, we were dropped off right in front of the tourist office situated in the City Hall building. A slightly less adventurous way to travel from Hat Yai to Nakhon would be by shared taxis, where four passengers are squashed into the back seats of a 1960s Mercedes (with no air-condition!), and two passengers sharing the front seat. A more luxurious way is to hire an entire (air-conditioned!) taxi at around US 50 from Hat Yai to Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Travel Correspondent for Thai Airways International The discovery began when a young American named Stephen Young, a Harvard sociology student and son of a former American Ambassador to Thailand, stumbled on a prehistoric burial site near the village of Ban Chiang, and there in an open field noticed many shards of pottery. He showed his find to the Fine Arts Department in Bangkok, and history was turned topsy-turvy. The Fine Arts Department submitted fragments of round-topped pots for carbon testing, and discovered they dated back to around 4600 BC. More excavations unearthed a rich collection of iron and bronze tools and utensils, buried alongside human skeletons. The discoveries would prove to be more important than anyone had even expected. Before long Ban Chiang would be making headlines around the world and become a household name in academic circles. Could these discoveries mean the dawn of civilization began not in the Middle East as history recorded it, but instead in a small village in a remote corner of northern Thailand? Serious excavations were now needed. From the University of Pennsylvania came American archeologist, Dr. Chester Gorman, and assigned to the project from the National Museum in Bangkok was the Thai archeologist, Dr. Pisit Charoenwongsa.

WEATHER-CHIANGMAI
(A TEAK WALLAH REMINISCES)
by R.W Wood

Dick Wood, one of the most famous characters in the expatriate community reminisces back one hundred years to the time when his father first arrived in Chiang Mai. In the year 1892 "The Chiang Mai Record," compiled by Mr.D.F. Macfie, notes that Mr.W.W.Wood was working for the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation as Forest Manager. In the year 1992 Mr.R.W.Wood, M.C.,his son, is still living in Chiang Mai. (This Wood family has no connection with W.A.R. Wood, the British "Consul in Paradise".) De Mortuis: "The story of the Chiang Mai Cemetery" by R.W. Wood opens with the following biographical note: Richrd Willoughby Wood was born in London in June 1916, the youngest son of W.W. Wood, a former Forest Manager of the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation in Chiang Mai and Bangkok: his mother had been Matron at the Bangkok Nursing Home. He was brought up in the countryside in Somerset and Devon, and educated at Wellington College and Peterhouse, Cambridge. In 1937,following in father's footsteps, he arrived in Burma as a forest assistant with BBTC and spent two happy years in the forest. On the outbreak of war he joined up in Burma, and was commissioned in November 1939 in the Burma Rifles. He served throughout the retreat of 1942,thereafter in intelligence patrol work on the Chindwin front until Christmas 1944, when scrub typhus very nearly finished his military (or any other) career. He was a major, and was awarded the Military Cross and a Mention-in-Dispatched. He stayed on in Burma after the war in the Burma Frontier Service, but was eventually pressed out by political changes after 11 years in the country.

WEATHER-CHIANGMAI HISTORY OF CHIANGMAI
Chiang Mai (Zimme) 100 years ago - by Archibald Ross Colquhoun

Penned in 1885, this interesting article describes one of the first visits to Chiang Mai by a westerner. A Chapter from 'Amongst the Shans' by Archibald Ross Colquhoun printed in 1885, describing a visit to Chiang Mai After an interesting journey of seventeen days from Pahpoon, we arrived within one day's distance of the town of Zimme. We were met by a chao, called Myintha, or Prince, by our Burmese followers-one of the thousand chaos with whom the place abounds. Four ponies decorated with glaring and cumbrous trappings were waiting our use. The chao insisted on shaking hands, which was not altogether pleasing, as his were not of the cleanest. Hand-shaking, it may be noted, is a custom imported from Bangkok, and all the chaos we conversed with insisted on our complying with it, more to show that they were conversant with the convenances of society than for any other reason. The cottage, which had been prepared for us by the express command of the King of Siam, was furnished with all sorts of Parisian knick-knacks, a practice much affected by the court officials at Bangkok. The cookery was a strange travesty of the European art, in the French style. When we learnt who the cooks were, our astonishment ceased; the chefs were Yunnanese. Notwithstanding our wish not to hurt the old gentleman's feelings. we were compelled to fall back on the bread and excellent Chinese tea which were provided.

History : The Kingdom of Thailand (known as Siam until 1939) was ruled by the Khmers, based in what is now neighbouring Cambodia, during the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1238, two Thai chieftains rebelled against Khmer domination and established the first independent Thai kingdom. Ayutthaya, to the north of Bangkok, was the capital of the kingdom from the early 14th century, until its destruction by Burmese invaders in 1767. The Burmese were quickly forced out and the monarchy re-established. The absolute rule of the monarchy lasted until 1932, when it was replaced by a system of constitutional monarchy.
Thereafter, Thailand gradually installed a democratic, pluralistic system of government. Progress was slow, mainly because of the attitude of the military, which has traditionally exercised a strong (although rarely beneficial) influence on Thai politics. Since 1932, the army has taken over the government on no less than 17 occasions. During the Cold War, this was a minor consideration ? democratic governments were a rarity in the region and Thailand's chief strategic ally, the USA, were more concerned with Thailand's role as a bulwark against encroaching communism from elsewhere in Southeast Asia. In this regard, Thailand was an influential member of the main regional anti-communist bloc, Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). Since the end of the Cold War, Thailand has been prominent in proposing the reformation of ASEAN into a regional trading bloc (see

Thailand Thailand is the only South East Asian Country never to have been colonised or occupied by a Western power. Thailand has a varied and colourful history. Officially known as Siam until 1939, the word ' Thailand' is literally translated as ' Free Land.' Since Thailand switched from absolute to constitutional monarchy in 1932, government has been conducted by a Prime Minister, Cabinet and Legislature. However between 1932 and 1991 there were numerous coups. The general election held in September 1992 produced a Democrat Party led coalition. Since then Thailand has had series of successive coalition governments none of which has suffered from military intervention. The King of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), is one of the longest serving monarchs in the world. He celebrated his 50th jubilee in 1996, and remains a well loved and influential Head of State, providing stability and continuity.
