The Thais, most historians believe, began migrating from southern China in the early part of the Christian era. At first they formed a number of city-states in the northern part of what is present-day Thailand, in places like Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, but these were never strong enough to exert much influence outside the immediate region. Gradually the Thais migrated further south to the broad and fertile central plains, and expanded their dominance over nearly the entire Indochina Peninsula. Contradictory as it may seem, however, recent archaeological discoveries around the northeast hamlet of Ban Chiang suggest that the world's oldest Bronze Age civilization was flourishing in Thailand some 5,000 years ago.
Sukhothai Period(1238-1438)
Sukhothai was the first Thai kingdom. It was founded in 1238 by two Thai governors, Khun Bang Klang Thao (Sri Inthrathit) and Khun Pha Muang who rebelled against the Khmers; and gave independence to the region. Sukhothai period was the most flourishing period of Thailand. It gained independence in 1238 and quickly expanded its boundary of influence. Sukhothai period was considered to be a golden age of Thai culture.

An Amazing Beginning
by Charles Kimball
The original inhabitants of Southeast Asia were a short, hairy, black-skinned race related to the Australian Aborigines, commonly called Negritos. Today they are found only in the most remote areas, still living a stone age lifestyle, but once they roamed the entire region, hunting and practicing slash-and-burn agriculture as far north as the Yangtze River.
At this early date the Khorat smiths were doing better work than their Mesopotamian counterparts; by 3000 B.C. they figured out that the strongest bronze alloy is made by mixing 1 part of tin with nine parts of copper. They were probably helped by a geographical advantage: Southeast Asia is the world's richest source of tin. Tin is uncommon in the West, and before the Mesopotamians discovered it, they made bronze by mixing copper and arsenic, with brittle and sometimes hazardous results.
At the 1600 B.C. level, archeologists came across another important discovery: iron spearheads, knives and bracelets. Normally the Hittites of ancient Turkey are credited with being the first people to forge iron, but these objects are just as old as anything the Hittites produced. Around the same time, the people went from dry cultivation to the wet-cultivation of rice in flooded fields that is still practiced today; that greatly increased the total food supply. The carabao

Thailand - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Thailand has a unique culture and way of life that can be partly attributed to an interesting fact about its history. Thailand has never been taken over or colonized by another country. And what little power other countries may have held over Thailand in the past didn't last. This makes Thailand a unique place in Southeast Asia, since most other countries there were colonized.
Thailand hasn't always been called Thailand. Until 1939, it was called Siam. And many of Thailand's greatest changes have come since then. But the country's history goes back many hundreds of years.
The first known civilization in Siam was a group of Buddhists called Mons. The Mons lived in central Thailand. It is believed that they came from the nearby Indian subcontinent, bringing the Buddhist religion with them. During the 15th and 16th centuries, these Mons joined together with other people from around the region to form a government to rule the area.
An early Siamese capital was at Ayuthaya. In the 16th and 18th centuries, forces from nearby Burma invaded Siam. The Burmese forces overran Ayuthaya, and in the 18th century, the Siamese were able to run off the Burmese. After doing so, the Siam capital was set at Thonburi, then to Bangkok, Thailand's present-day capital.

The History of the AIDS Epidemic in Thailand
There are very few developing countries in the world where public policy has been effective in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS on a national scale, but Thailand is an exception. A massive program to control HIV has reduced visits to commercial sex workers by half, raised condom usage, decreased STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) dramatically, and achieved substantial reductions in new HIV infections. Thailand, though, is also a reminder that success can be relative. Its well funded, politically supported and comprehensive prevention programmes have saved millions of lives, reducing the number of new HIV infections from 140,000 in 1991 to 21,000 in 2003. None the less, one-in-100 Thais in this country of 65 million people is infected with HIV, and AIDS has become the leading cause of death. However, unless past efforts are sustained and new sources of infection are addressed, the striking achievements made in controlling the epidemic could now be put at risk. There is a need in Thailand to continue strong HIV/AIDS prevention and education efforts in the future, as well as providing treatment and care for those living with HIV/AIDS
The Start of the AIDS Epidemic in Thailand
The first case of AIDS was reported in Thailand in 1984, and it is believed that widespread transmission began in the late 1980s.

Nielloware in Thailand - History in Thailand Development of Nielloware in Thailand Did Niello originate in Thailand? Although Professor Sawai Suthipitak clearly stated that the origin of Nielloware remained "an unresolved question" There are no doubts, however, about the importance of Nielloware as a symbol to highlight the importance of selected nobility positions. The first mention of Nielloware in Thai recorded history comes from the Royal Family Laws during the reign of King Trai Lok Nat (1448-1488). The Three Seals Law appears in these documents. This law states that "a land-holding nobleman in the 10,000-order rank was entitled to govern a city and to hold a black Niello-ware ceremonial pedestal and tray to show his official rank" Phunjabhan indicates that also during the Ayutthaya period there was a mention of Niello in Luang Ha Wat's testament (1991). Most authors agree on the importance of Niello in the court of King Narai of Ayutthaya (1656 - 1688), as evidenced by the chronicles of the kingdom. The chronicles register presents sent by King Narai to King Louis XIV in France and also to one of the Popes in Rome. King Narai requested from the viceroy of NST to have one of the best artisans in the city create these special pieces. After reviewing the work of different scholars it is still unclear if Niello production started first in Ayutthaya or in NST. Besides those two cities Niello was also made in Ubon Ratchathani and Chantaburi, although the quality and amount of Niello products from these cities are considered minor. After the decline of Niello production in Ayutthaya, during the Rattanakosin era there was a resurgence in the production of Niello. Nonetheless, the importance of Niello in the court seems to have remained constant. According to Punjabhan some of the best examples of Thai Nielloware were created in NST as presents offered for different sovereigns

Nielloware in Thailand - History : Overview Overview of the history of Nielloware around the world Origin Most civilizations have devised ways to beautify their metal objects. Some of the methods used for ornamenting metals are hammering, chiseling, engraving, inlay, Niello, enamelling, etc. It has been argued that decorating metal objects with other metals of contrasting colors is simple by creating alloys that melt easily. For instance, dark color alloys can be produced without much difficulty through melting specific metals . Therefore, the early history of an art such as Niello is difficult to establish. The origin of Niello has been to Egypt during the 18th dynasty (c. 1540 BC - c. 1292 BC), or in Crete or Mycenae around the same time . According to Avieropolous Choo, one of the earliest examples of Nielloware is a silver cup with Niello decorations originating in Enkomi, Cyprus around 1400 BC (1984). However, other authors, such as Higgins and Frankfort suggest that the first examples of Niello come from Syria. These authors, however, propose different dates of origin, either 1800BC or between the 14th and 12th c. BC. Most sources agree that Niello was rather popular in Roman times, with production not only in Rome, but also in Roman colonies and in Byzantium. An early example of Niello is a statuette of Roman Emperor Nero from the first century C.E. Other Roman objects decorated with Niello abound through the first five centuries of the Christian era

Sexual relationships in Thailand

If you are traveling to Thailand, you may be interested in sexual relationships with locals, and no, I do not mean the services of prostitutes or other commercial providers. While you can meet Thais interested in sex accidentally, the chances of success are not particularly high if you are there only for a limited period of time (as I said: no prostitutes). On the other hand, Thais often are sexually attracted to foreign people. For young Thai women, especially in Bangkok, it is chic to have a Western boyfriend. So, there must be a trick to overcome the time-consuming "accidental", and to link more effectively the sexual interests of foreign visitors with those of locals. Try the Internet. Or, more to the point: try www.AdultfriendsFinder.com . The service lists some 5,000 Thailand residents explicitly interested in non-commercial sexual relationships. While there are more males on the search than females, there are indeed an amazing number of women using the service. Listings are divided into categories: men seeking women, women seeking men, men seeking men, women seeking women, men seeking couples or groups, and women seeking couples or groups.

Its history is divided into five major periods Nanchao Period (650-1250 A.D.) The Thai people founded their kingdom in the southern part of China, which is Yunnan, Kwangsi and Canton today. A great number of people migrated south as far as the Chao Phraya Basin and settled down over the Central Plain under the sovereignty of the Khmer Empire, whose culture they probably accepted. The Thai people founded their independent state of Sukhothai around 1238 A.D., which marks the beginning of the Sukhothai Period Sukhothai Period (1238-1378 A.D.)

The 1300s saw the decline of Sukhothai , which eventually became a vassal state of Ayutthaya , a young kingdom further south in the Chao Phraya river valley. Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya remained the capital until 1767 when it was destroyed by invaders from Burma. During Ayutthaya 's 417 years as the capital, under the rule of 33 kings, the Thais brought their distinctive culture to fruition, totally rid their lands of Khmer presence, and fostered contact with Arabian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and European powers. King Uthong Ramatibodi I The founder of Ayutthaya as the capital of the Thai Kingdom in 1350 was Ramathibodi I, who before his accession to the throne, had distinguished himself as the Prince of U-thong or Supannaphum (now a district in the province of Suphan Buri). During his reign (1350-1369), the government assumed the form of an absolute monarchy, the main structure of which was similar to Sukhothai , but it was inextricably tinged with strong Cambodian influences. The Thai King became an autocrat, no longer in paternal relati onship with his people in the same way as in the Sukhothai period. The land in the whole country belonged to him and a court language grew up to designate anything concerning himself or his possessions. Ramathibodi I consolidated his kingdom through the adoption of an expansionist policy and the appointment of four Great Officers in charge of the Royal Household, Local Government, Finance and Agriculture.

    THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE-THAILAND'S HISTORY

The management of national revenue goes back to the 15th century to the establishment of the Royal Treasury Department in 1448. It was one of the four principal government agencies decreed by King Boromtrilokanat of Ayuthya Era, to collect various forms of taxes and import duties, to deal in trade with foreign merchants, and to operate the Crown's warehouse business and merchant fleet. However, revenue and tax collection had not been efficient until the early Bangkok period at the turn of the 19th century. During the reign of King Rama III (1824-1851), revenue collection was so low that tax concessionaire system was adopted. Leading businessmen, who offered the highest bids, were appointed tax collectors for certain types of business which the royal government maintained monopolies. During the reign of King Rama IV (1853-1868), Thailand signed the Bowring Treaty with England in 1855, and opened its door wider to the international trading community. However, the Thai government had to concede the Crowns monopolies on certain commodities as well as the fixing of customs duty rate at no more than three percent. The country was at a disadvantage, but international trade grew. Foreign merchants, trading Mexican silver dollar for Thai currency to buy domestic goods, exhausted the money supply in circulation. As a result, the first Royal Mint was set up in 1860 to increase money in circulation.

History: The Kingdom of Thailand (known as Siam until 1939) was ruled by the Khmers, based in what is now neighbouring Cambodia, during the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1238, two Thai chieftains rebelled against Khmer domination and established the first independent Thai kingdom.
