Thailand means 'land of the free' and for over 800 years the Thai people have bragged about being the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized. Thai people originally came from Southern China to what was then Siam but when some of them didn't want to become part of the Chinese mainstream they moved to what is now Thailand. After Thailand settled down, the Sukhothai period began. Under the King's ruling the Sukhothai land was successful - there were fish in the water and rice in the fields. In 1350 a new King took over and everything changed.

Thai History
A khmer style temple from the old capital of Ayuthaya. Thai history in a nutshell: Archaeological evidence so far dates settlement of Thailand back at least 5,000 years. Successive migrations of Mons, Khmer and Tai from the north settled more of the country. By the height of the Khmer kingdom based in Angkor in the 11 th century, Cambodia controled much of what is now Thailand. By late in the 13th century, Angkor's power was on the wane, and several northern chieftans came together to form the first "Thai" kingdom of Sukhothai. Although the period is heavily romanticized by the Thais themselves, a visit to Sukhothai itself demonstrates that there was a significant kingdom established here, capable of erecting huge monuments which must have required a good sized economic and social base to achieve. Sukhothai flourished and expanded for nearly 200 years, but power eventually shifted southward to Ayuthaya, which was founded in the mid fourteenth century. Under the 33 kings of Ayuthaya, Thai influence expanded until they held sway over the entire Malay peninsula and much of what is today Laos and Cambodia. During this time, the first formal contacts between Siam and Europe were established, and around Ayuthaya today there are the remains of the Portuguese village as well as a Japanese area.

http://www.sala.net/Thailand/History/early.html
Early Thailand Such stone implements as axes and utensils have been dug up in various parts of the Indo-Chinese peninsula, thus indicating that the earliest inhabitants must have been primitive people who lived in caves. Next came the Negritos to be followed by the Mon-Khmers and the Lawas. Some of the Khmer king won fame as great builders. Suriyavarman II (1113-1150), for instance built Angkor Wat. In the wake of its destruction of Dvaravati, the Khmer empire grew and reached its zenith when the whole of the Chao Phraya valley was brought under its rule by the end of the tenth century. According to various historical sources, the Thais might have originated in western or north-western Szechuan. Like the Chinese, the Thais belong to the Mongolian stock. From the sixth century B.C. onwards, Chinese annals made frequent references to the T hais as the "barbarians" south of the Yan-tse-siang. The Chinese gradually began to encroach upon them and press them hard. Due to their lack of unity, the Thais could not organize an effective resistance to the Chinese rule and most were eventually absor bed by them, while others made attempts to preserve their independence. In order to attain their objective, they started their southward migrations gradually and intermittently. The Thais followed the river valleys in their movements towards the south. The western group of Thais descended along the Salween river where they settled down and became Shans or so-called Great Thais. Choosing the Mekong valley as its home, the eastern group spread its influence to Tonking, and constituted the ancestry of the Laotians, while the middle group emigrated into Thailand. These last two groups have been referred to as the Little Thais.

LITTLE IS KNOWN of the earliest inhabitants of what is now Thailand, but 5,000-year-old archaeological sites in the northeastern part of the country are believed to contain the oldest evidence of rice cultivation and bronze casting in Asia and perhaps in the world. In early historical times, a succession of tribal groups controlled what is now Thailand. The Mon and Khmer peoples established powerful kingdoms that included large areas of the country. They absorbed from contact with South Asian peoples religious, social, political, and cultural ideas and institutions that later influenced the development of Thailand's culture and national identity. The Tai, a people who originally lived in southwestern China, migrated into mainland Southeast Asia over a period of many centuries. The first mention of their existence in the region is a twelfth-century A.D. inscription at the Khmer temple complex of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which refers to syam , or "dark brown" people (the origin of the term

Thailand's present extension is the result of the European colonial power's establishment of borders at the turn of the century 1900, even if Thailand as only country in the Southeast Asia never was colonized. Thailand's history is usually divided by the reign of the kingdoms Sukhothai (1238-1419), Ayutthaya (1351-1767) and Bangkok (from 1767), where of the last two are more commonly known as Siam. 1939 the official name changed from Siam to Thailand, but was then changed back to Siam during the period 1945-49... Tue, 27-Sep-05 00:47 (Thailand Time) Thailand History Archaeological discoveries around the north- east hamlet of Ban Chiang suggest that the world's oldest Bronze Age civilisation was flourishing in Thailand some 5,600 years ago. Successive waves of immigrants, including Mons, Khmers and Thais, gradually entered the land mass now known as Thailand, most slowly travelling along fertile river valleys from southern China. By the 11th and 12th centuries, Khmers ruled much of the area from Angkor. By the early 1200s, Thais had established small northern city states in Lanna, Phayao and Sukhothai. In 1238, two Thai chieftains rebelled against Khmer suzerainty and established the first truly independent Thai kingdom in Sukhothai (literally, 'Dawn of Happiness'). Sukhothai saw the Thais' gradual expansion throughout the entire Chao Phraya River basin, the establishment of Theravada Buddhism as the paramount Thai religion, the creation of the Thai alphabet and the first expression of nascent Thai art forms, including painting, sculpture, architecture and literature. Sukhothai declined

Neat and respectful dress should be worn in all religious shrines. It is not considered polite to visit religious monuments in shorts, miniskirts or hot pants. Trousers and jeans are considered unsuitable attire for women visiting a temple. Indeed, all Buddha images are regarded as sacred, regardless of size, age or position, and should all be shown due respect. Buddhist monks are not allowed to touch or be touched by a woman, or accept anything from a woman's hand. In a Muslim mosque, men should cover their heads, even with an open handkerchief, and women should be well covered with slacks or a long skirt, a long sleeved blouse buttoned to the neck, and a scarf over the head. Everyone should remove her/his shoes before entering the mosque. Mosques should not be visited during a religious gathering. The Monarchy
The Royal Family is highly revered in Thailand, and images such as statues, photographs, pictures etc. should be shown due respect. In a movie theatre, everybody is expected to stand during the playing of the Royal Anthem and a portrait of the King is shown on the screen.

    Phuket, Thailand - History
Phuket island has a long recorded history, and remains dating back to A.D. 1025 indicate that the islands present day name derives in meaning from the Tamil manikram, or crystal mountain. For most of history, however, it was know as Junk Ceylon, which, with variations, is the name found on old maps. The name is thought to have its roots in. Ptolemy's Geographia, written by the Alexandrian geographer in the Third Century A.D. He mentioned that in making a trip from Suwannapum to the Malay Peninsula it was necessary to pass the cape of Jang Si Lang.
Phuket was a way station on the route between India and China where seafarers stopped to shelter. The island appears to have been part of the Shivite empire (called in Thai the Tam Porn Ling) that established itself on the Malay Peninsula during the first Millenium A.D. Later, as Muang Takua-Talang, it was part of the Srivichai and Siri Tahm empires. Governed as the eleventh in a constellation of twelve cities, Phuket's emblem, by which it was known to others in those largely per-literate times, was the dog.
During the Sukothai period, Phuket was associated with Takua Pah in what is now Phang-nga province, another area with vast tin reserve. The Dutch established a trading post during the Ayuthaya Period in the 16th Cent. The island's northern and central regions then were governed by the Thais, and the southern and western parts were given over to the tin trade, a concession in the hands of foreigners.
