The Hong Kong-based magazine formally apologized Monday for any misunderstanding the article may have generated but did not issue any corrections. Maj. Gen. Pongsaphat Pongchareon, spokesman for the national police, said no charges of "lese majeste" or defamation of the monarchy or any other criminal charges would be filed against the magazine's Bangkok bureau chief, Shawn Crispin, an American, and correspondent Rodney Tasker, a Briton. He said a committee ruled that the article "which referred to His Majesty the King was not appropriate but did not violate the law of lese majeste." Violation of the law carries a prison term of up to 15 years. | |
