Thailand is a significant net oil importer. Energy consumption is growing rapidly as a result of strong economic growth. Note: The information in this report is the best available as of December 2004 and is subject to change. GENERAL BACKGROUND
Thailand's economy has slowed slightly over the past year, but real GDP growth is still forecast at a reasonably strong 6.3% for 2004, down from 6.8% in 2003. During 2004, slower growth in Thai exports was partially offset by a strong year in the tourism sector. Real GDP growth for 2005 is projected at 5.7%. Longer-term annual growth rates are projected in the range of 5%-6%. The Thai economy is burdened by a relatively weak banking sector with a high proportion of non-performing loans. Delays in the restructuring of corporate debt also have been worrisome enough to prompt warnings from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and international credit rating analysts. Any worldwide economic downturn could rapidly affect Thailand due to these structural weaknesses. Thailand 's energy sector is undergoing a period of restructuring and privatization. The Thai electric utility and petroleum industries, which historically have been state-controlled monopolies, are currently being restructured.

CNN.com Asia More news from our Asia edition Relief officials had recovered 22 bodies so far and were trying to find others. Over 600 houses were damaged by surging water with dozens completely destroyed. A weather bureau official said accumulated rainfall over the last few days in the province, 620 kilometers north of Bangkok, had risen to about 285 mm (11 inch) early on Friday from 67 mm (3 inch) on Wednesday. about: My Benjarong
Benjarong refers to the traditional form of hand-painted Thai porcelain. Benjarong literally translates from the Bali and Sanskrit words 'panch' and 'rang' as 5 colors. Often, more than 5 colors are actually used. 12 or 18 carat gold paint is usually gilded and incorporated as a background.
This style of multi-colored and densely painted enamels in mostly symmetric patterns on a white porcelain base came to Thailand from the Ming Dynasty in China. In the early 1800's, benjarong, or the gold-gilded variety that came to be known as "Lai Nam Thong", was made exclusively for the Royal Court. Later, wealthy merchants and aristocrats began to use benjarong. Modern Thai factory owners and artists have recently revived this art, following traditional Thai patterns and shapes. In addition, they are innovating benjarong from traditional Thai decorative designs, like the bowl at left, to include more modern designs like tableware. Benjarong is now extremely popular among Thais and tourists, alike. The internet brings this fine art to the rest of the world. Benjarong is now used by all and is enjoyed for it's graceful beauty worldwide.
The detail and beauty of benjarong is reflective of the incredible workmanship, artistry and detail in the hand-crafted design. The cost of benjarong is reflective of the number of hours and days that it can take single artists or teams of skilled craftsmen to hand-paint individual pieces and full sets. Deft applications of single brush strokes result in a raised surface feel. The colors have undergone 800 degrees C plus heat treatment. These pieces will shine forever and require only a damp cloth to wipe away the dust.

193. Prehistory In Thailand
Synopsis of Thai prehistory from the Paleolithic Period.
http://www.cs.ait.ac.th/wutt/prehi.html
Prehistory in Thailand
Tens of thousand years ago, this land was covered with lush tropical rain forests. The fertile land, temperate climatic conditions, abundent natural resources attracted early settlers and migrants throughtout the subsequent periods, even up to the present. Rich cultures amalgamated into distinct life styles. Emerging out of a thousand years of consciously striving for unity were the T'ai people. City states soon unified into an independent kingdom. Emergent also was a distinct culture known as Thai. Stone tools and implements of prehistoric man dating to the Paleolithic Period have been found throughout this country. Over 10,000 years ago, man lived near the waterways in the north and central Thailand. Archaeological evidence of Neolithic settlements has been discovered in an area covering no less than 40 provinces. They include tools and decorative objects made of flint, bone and shells. Primitive paintings dating to this period exist in a number of caves. Metal works, both bronze and iron, appeared almost simultaneously some 2,700 years ago. A part of prehistory in Thailand has become a subject for intensive study shedding new light on the evoluation of man in southeast Asia. "Ban Chiang" used to be the name of a small village in Udonthani Province. Since the discovery that this modern settlement had been founded on top of an area rich in prehistoric archaeological evidence, the name has become well known worldwide and synonymous with an important prehistoric culture.

"To read a book about a country's cuisine isn't simply to go looking for 'good things'; it is also to better know - by means of the recipes - the customs and the richness or poverty of a place, and the spirit of those who inhabit it. It is above all, to participate in the symbolic celebration of the shared repast."
