Dear Sir,
In recent months, the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation has become aware of a troubling situation in the Mae Sot area of Thailand, and we wanted to bring our findings and concerns directly to the attention of your government and its appropriate representatives.
By way of background, the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation, based in Hong Kong and the United States, is among the world's leading branded apparel companies. Our products, which span the menswear, womenswear and childrenswear categories, are distributed in more than 45 countries across the globe, and we posted revenue of $1.89 billion in our most recent fiscal year. Given the volume and scope of our business, we utilize a broad array of third-party manufacturers to produce our merchandise. Over the years, our products have been made in manufacturing facilities in Thailand, as well as in more than 35 additional countries. There are no factories in the Mae Sot district of Thailand that are currently authorized to make Tommy Hilfiger merchandise. However, it was brought to our attention recently that Tommy Hilfiger products had been made in Mae Sot under substandard conditions, without our authorization, and in violation of the Tommy Hilfiger Code of Conduct. This work allegedly included the employment of Burmese workers under substandard and perhaps illegal conditions.

GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS
Party and Government: Constitutional monarchy established 1932. King Bhumibol Adulyadej (1946- ) formally reigns over highly centralized unitary state, but real decision making in affairs of state rests with prime minister, in late 1987 General Prem Tinsulanonda. Prime minister need not be elected member of National Assembly, the national legislature; can assume position solely by assertion of leadership, with his role subsequently legitimized through pro forma royal appointment. Governmental system based on Constitution promulgated in December 1978 and divided into executive, bicameral legislature (House of Representatives and Senate), and judiciary. Multiparty system with sixteen parties participating in 1986 election; partisan politics gaining in importance but still largely a function of personalities. Practical politics confined mostly to members of military-bureaucratic elites and their supporters. Administrative Divisions: Country divided into seventythree provinces ( changwat ); subdivisions include districts (

on controversial US research into Thai jasmine rice.
August 2002 : On the heels of the Basmati rice conteroversy comes another. Since November 2001, hundreds of farmers in Thailand have undertaken a series of protests condemning the United States (US) government for its attempts to genetically modify the popular Thai jasmine rice variety for planting by US farmers. The protests by farmers have also forced Thailand's government representatives to raise the issue of protection of jasmine rice variety at the ongoing Fourth Ministerial World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations in Doha, Qatar. In mid-November, about 300 local farmers rallied outside the Maha Sarakham district office in northeast Thailand expressing concern that planting the new variety in the US would threaten the economic livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of farmers particularly in Thailand's northeast region. Farmers' representatives and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) also rallied in front of the US embassy in Bangkok. More nation-wide protests by Thai farmers are planned to continue throughout November and December. The controversy over the US research into Thai jasmine rice variety or Hom Mali emerged after news that a US researcher Chris Deren had developed a new strain of early maturing jasmine rice that needs little sunshine and is short enough to be harvested easily by machines and thus could be planted throughout the flatlands of the US.
