Across this landscape live Thailand's population of abo ut 60 million people. Along with the ethnic Thais, who make up around 80 percent of the population, there are significant groups of Chinese (about 10 percent), Malays (about 4 percent), Lao, Mons, Khmers, Indians and Burmese - reflecting this country's long history at the crossroads of Southeast Asia. Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia and as a gateway to Indochina. Thailandborders Lao PDR in the norht and northeast; the Union of Myanmar in the north and west; Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand in the east and Malaysia in the south. Thailand covers a land area of 513,115 square kilometres, roughly the size of France and extends about 1,620 kilometres from north to south and 775 kilometres from east to west. Geographical Regions Thailand can be split up into four distinct geographical regions: Northern Region: Mountains, forests and fertile valleys. Bordered by Myanmar and Laos, characterised by forested mountains - lower extremities of Himalayan foothills - and fertile river valleys, northern Thailand encompasses part of the fabled Golden Triangle. Diverse elements, including crisp mountain scenary, exotic hill tribes, forests worked by elephants, colourful festivals, invigorating cool season weather, ancient cities, exquisite northern Thai and Burmese-style temples, and friendly people contribute to northern Thailand's enduring charm. Chang Chen:
If you saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon you know who this actor is. He played the romantic bandit. Chang is currently working on the science fiction movie,
Mew Lalita Panyopas: Well known in Thailand, the actress and model has been in several Thai movies and a few TV shows. Born in Bangkok, Mew went to Inchbald School of Design in London, England where she took Interior Design.
Eng and Chang Bunker: The original Siamese twins were born in 1811 in Siam (Thailand) but spent most of their lives in the US. Even though they were attached at the chest both of them married and had children. Brief History
Thailand means 'land of the free' and for over 800 years the Thai people have bragged about being the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized. Thai people originally came from Southern China to what was then Siam but when some of them didn't want to become part of the Chinese mainstream they moved to what is now Thailand. After Thailand settled down, the Sukhothai period began. Under the King's ruling the Sukhothai land was successful - there were fish in the water and rice in the fields. In 1350 a new King took over and everything changed.

http://www.un.or.th/Thailand_Info/Geography/geography.html
Overview Thailand covers an area of 514,000 square kilometres in the centre of the South-East Asian peninsula. It is bordered by Myanmar (Burma), Lao People's Democratic Republic, Cambodia and Malaysia, and has 2,420 kilometres of coast line on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman sea. Thailand stretches 1,650 kilometres from north to south, and from east to west 780 kilometres at its widest point.
For economic, social and ecological reasons, Thailand is usually classified into four geographical regions. They are: the central region (including Bangkok Metropolitan Region) comprising the basin of the Chao Phrya River which runs from north to south and after crossing Bangkok flows to the Gulf of Thailand. The central region is often called the "rice bowl" of Thailand being the most fertile area of the country. After the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, it enjoys the highest per capita income in the country.
The northern region is mountainous and was traditionally the most heavily forested area of the country. In the recent years, however, overcutting has considerably reduced its forest resources. The main centres of population are in the narrow alluvial valleys along the four north-south flowing rivers which unite in the northern central plain to form the Chao Phraya.

Geography of Thailand
Geography of Thailand Thailand is a central country of Southeast Asia, lying between Myanmar ( Burma), Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia, with coasts on the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand and the Indian Ocean. Thai students are told that the shape of their country resembles the shape of an ancient axe with the peninsular part being the handle or that the country resembles an elephant with a long trunk. Thailand can be divided into four distinct geographical regions: the North, the North-East, the Central region and the South. Each region is characterized by its topography, its agriculture and its culture. The North which is bordered by Myanmar and Laos, lies in the lower extremities of the Himalayan foothills and consists of forested mountains and fertile river valleys. It is inhabited by a number of minority hill tribes, each with its own language and local culture. This is part of the Golden Triangle, which also includes related areas in Myanmar and Laos; illegal drugs are still grown here, although the government is on a campaign to replace them with other crops. Thailand has a monsoon climate, with is tropical or sub tropical. It is divided into three distinct seasons. A hot season from March to May; a rainy season, caused by the monsoon winds, from June to October; and a cool season from November to February. This climate has caused Thailand to be especially rich in bird life, with over 1000 species recorded. Native animals, now mostly confined to parks and wildlife preserves, include the wild elephant, tiger, black bear, and leopard.

The topography varies from the plateau region at the foot of Bantad Mounatain Range and dipping the elevation down to the flat plain at the edge of the Andaman Sea. The terrains are characterized by hillocks scattering around the region. The province is nourished by two main rivers; one is Trang River, having the provenance from the Luang Mountain Range, and the other is Palian River, coming from the Bantad Mountain Range. Trang is situated about 828 kilometers from Bangkok and occupies about 4,917 square kilometers. Thailand Hotel Guide The area between the 6th and the 20th line of latitude (see Full Map of Thailand ) that is now known as Thailand has since ancient times been the home of highly developed civilizations, long before it was "discovered" in the 16th century by Europeans (as a matter of fact, even before the Thai themselves arrived there). The earliest evidence of settlement is the Ban Chiang culture that existed in the 5th century B.C. in the Northeast of Thailand (many remains have been found in a small village near Udon Thani). The Ban Chiang people (their exact identity has not yet been determined) knew bronze, iron, ceramics, and ceremonial burials. They cultivated rice and kept domesticated animals. In the 3rd century A.D. they disappeared, for reasons still unknown today. Ancient Thailand (Mural at Wat Phra Kaew, Bangkok) 9 centuries later, from the 6th century A.D. on, the Mon culture flourished in Thailand. The Mon settled in the Menam Delta in the Central Plains and in the North (Haripunchai, now called Lamphun, was the capital of one of their most important kingdoms in the North) and brought Buddhism, Sanskrit, and many other Indian influences to Thailand.
