World Facts Index Thailand Map of Thailand Boundaries
Thailand in the late 1980s shared boundaries with Burma, Malaysia, Laos, and Cambodia. Although neither China nor Vietnam bordered Thailand, the territory of both countries came within 100 kilometers of Thai territory. Many parts of Thailand's boundaries followed natural features, such as the Mekong River. Most borders had been stabilized and demarcated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in accordance with treaties forced on Thailand and its neighbors by Britain and France. In some areas, however, exact boundaries, especially along Thailand's eastern borders with Laos and Cambodia, were still in dispute in the late 1980s. Topography and Drainage
The most conspicuous features of Thailand's terrain are high mountains, a central plain, and an upland plateau. Mountains cover much of northern Thailand and extend along the Burmese border down through the Malay Peninsula. The central plain is a lowland area drained by the Chao Phraya and its tributaries, the country's principal river system, which feeds into the delta at the head of the Bight of Bangkok. The Chao Phraya system drains about one-third of the nation's territory. In the northeastern part of the country the Khorat Plateau, a region of gently rolling low hills and shallow lakes, drains into the Mekong River through the Mae Nam Mun. The Mekong system empties into the South China Sea and includes a series of canals and dams.

A friendly and hospitable population, magnificent landscapes, from rice fields to the green high mountains of the North, endless dream beaches, in brief, a very appreciated destination which will know how to enchant you. Known under the name of "Siam" until 1939, and again between 1945 and 1949, on May 11th, 1949, it was established by official proclamation that the country would be called from now on "Thailand". Word "Thai" means "Free" and consequently "Thailand" means "Land of the Free People". We present you below, in a few lines, the various aspects of this amazing country. GEOGRAPHY Situated in the heart of the continental zone of Southeast Asia, Thailand is surrounded by Laos, Cambodia and Gulf of Thailand (South China Sea) on its east side, Myanmar and Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) on the West and Malaysia in the South.

    GEOGRAPHY
Size: Approximately 514,000 square kilometers. Topography: Chief topographic features include central plain dominated by Mae Nam (river) Chao Phraya and its tributaries. To northeast rises dry, undulating Khorat Plateau bordered on east by Mekong River. Mountains along northern and western borders with Burma extend south into narrow, largely rain-forested Malay Peninsula. Network of rivers and canals associated with northern mountains and central plain drain, via Chao Phraya, into Gulf of Thailand. Mae Nam Mun and other northeastern streams drain via Mekong into South China Sea. Soils vary. Topography and drainage define four regions: North, Northeast, Center, and South. Climate: Tropical monsoon climate. Southwest monsoons arriving between May and July signal start of rainy season lasting until October. Cycle reverses with northeast monsoon in November and December, ushering in dry season. Cooler temperatures give way to extremely hot, dry weather March through May. In general, rainfall heaviest in South, lightest in Northeast. Data as of September 1987

    http://www.geographia.com/thailand/
Thailand Adventure in Thailand Asia Homepage The World Thailand is the geographical heart of South-East Asia. The infamous golden triangle, located at the nation's northernmost point, is where Thailand's borders meet those of both Laos and Myanmar (Burma). The border with Myanmar continues to the west and then south as far as the Malay peninsula, much of which is occupied by Thailand. On the east, the border with Laos meanders southeast along the Mekong River until it reaches Cambodia, which is due east of Bangkok, the Thai Capital. In the south is the Gulf of Thailand. Roughly the size of France (200,000 sq. miles), Thailand is composed of four main regions. The northern mountainous region contains numerous ruins and temples, the ancient city of Chieng Mai, and Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon . This region is also home to the hill tribes of Thailand , distinct ethnic groups which settled in the area thousands of years ago after migrating from as far away as Tibet and central China. The north-east of Thailand occupies the semi-arid Korat plateau, the most desolate and least-visited part of the country. An interesting blend of Thai, Lao, and Khmer influences characterise the culture of the Korat. Central Thailand, which consists of the fertile plains surrounding the Chao Phraya River, is the country's most populous region and its rice basket. Thailand's alluring and congested capital city of Bangkok is located along the banks of the Chao Phraya, near the river's outlet into the Bight of Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand. The southern region of Thailand, which stretches for hundreds of miles along the Malay peninsula, abounds with stunning beaches and scores of tropical islands.

Thailand covers a land area of 515.000 square kilometers, from latitude North 5° 30¨ to 21° and from longitude East 97° 30¨ to 105° 30¨. Extends about 2,500 kilometers from north to south and 1,250 kilometers from east to west. The coastline has 1,850 kilometers on the Gulf of Thailand, where Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are located, and 870 kilometers in the Indian Ocean where is Pukhet Island.
The Kingdom of Thailand, shares borders with Myanmar (Burma) on the west and northwest, Laos on the east and northeast, Cambodia (Kampuchea) on the southeast, and Malaysia on the south. Thailand, was never colonized by Europeans and has existed as a unified monarchy since 1350. The capital, BANGKOK, an attractive blend of Western and Thai architecture, was established in 1782.

    Geography
Roughly the same size as France, Thailand covers a land area of 514,000 square km. From the tip of the trunk to the top of the ear, Thailand measures 1,620 km. The coastline measures 3,219 km.
Thailand is divided into four natural regions. The forested and mountainous north, with its deep, narrow, alluvial valleys; the plateau of undulating hills to the northeast, subject to floods and droughts, and the hilly to mountainous. South, with thick virgin forests and rich deposits of minerals and ores. The fertile Central Plains of the Chao Phraya River in the central region gives the country much of its food supply.
    Climate
Thailand generally has a tropical climate with 3 distinct seasons-a hot dry season from March to May, a rainy season from June to September, and a cool season from October to February. In the far south, the climate is humid, warm and variable year round. In the north, changes are much more significant with daytime temperatures in the hot season often approaching 40C, and occasionally dropping below 20C in the cool season.

    By Nina Brown
Back to Classics Background Innovation Although interest in the spatial distribution of disease can be traced to the ancient world, the subfield of medical geography is a relatively young one. Jacques May (1896-1976), a French surgeon who worked in Thailand, is generally credited with establishing the field with numerous publications on the link between ecology and tropical disease ,including his classic work The Ecology of Human Disease (1958). Formal graduate programs in medical geography were first established in a handful of American universities in the 1970s. The Geographical Review Today, the kind of holistic and cross-disciplinary perspective Meade advocated in 1977 has been widely adopted by medical geographers and medical practitioners, who often work in partnership to understand the spatial processes that underlie patterns of health and disease. As the pace of population movements has quickened, migration has become an important area of investigation for researchers seeking to understand the spread or spatial diffusion of specific illnesses, like HIV/AIDS (Gould 1993), as well as the relationship between health and migration more generally (Beenstock 1980).
