Geography of Thailand
Thailand has a total land area of 513,115 square kilometers. The country is bounded by Myanmar, Lao, Cambodia and Malaysia During the early 1960s, more than 50 percent of the country is covered by forest, however, in 1997 this declined to only 20 percent The country has 25 major river systems (Table 1). Over the last two decades, the watersheds of these river systems play a very
crucial role specifically in boosting agricultural production of the country. Thailand has different geological varieties in four regions. North and West are mountainous, alternating with plains along narrow valleys. Several rise to over 1,500 meters, the highest mountain in Thailand is Doi Inthanon (2,565 m. or 8,417 ft.) on the Thanon Thongchai range in the province of Chiang Mai. Central Region is a vast plain made up of Chao Phraya River basin and the tall-ends of the Ping, Wang, Yom, Nan and Pa Sak rivers, touching on the basins of the Mae Klong and Bang Pakong rivers. The Central Plain area is made up of sedimentary deposits from the Tertiary and Quaternary periods and therefore relatively late in geological term. Subsequently, the land was elevated only a little higher than mean sea level. As it has fertile soil and water, the Central Plain attracted large groups of settlers and eventually became the economic and political center of the country today.

Thailand is situated in South-East Asia, covering an area of nearly 513,115 square kilometres. It is roughly the size of France. It shares land borders with Myanmar (Burma) in the north and west, the Andaman Sea in the west, Laos in the north and north-east, Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand in the east, and Malaysia in the south. The shape of the country is similar to the profile of an elephant with a long trunk stretching down the peninsular. At school, students are taught that their country resembles the shape of an ancient axe with the peninsular being the handle. [ see maps FACTS:

Isan is the northeastern region of Thailand Isan (also written as Isaan, Issan, or Esarn; Thai Isan อีสาน) is the northeast region of Thailand . It is located on the Khorat Plateau , bordered by the Mekong River to the north and east, and by Cambodia to the south. To the west it is separated from Northern and Central Thailand by the Phetchabun mountain range Agriculture is the main economic activity, but due to the socio-economic conditions and hot, dry climate output lags behind that of other parts of the country. This is Thailand's poorest region. The main language of the region is Isan (which is similar to Lao ), but Thai is also widespread and Khmer is spoken in the south. Most of the population is of Lao origin, but the region's incorporation into the modern Thai state has been largely successful. Prominent aspects of Isan culture include mor lam music, muay Thai boxing, cock fighting and the food, in which sticky rice and chillies are prominent.

Geography Situated in Southeast Asia, Thailand is predominantly a Buddhist kingdom almost equidistant from India and China. Known by outsiders as Siam for centuries, Thailand (the land of smiles), has been something of a Southeast Asian migratory, cultural, and religious crossroads. Approximately the size of France, Thailand covers and area of 510,000 sq. km and has a population of 60 million growing at a rate of 1.5% each year. Thailand shares its border with Myanmar in the west and north, Laos in the northeast, Cambodia in the east and Malaysia in the south. Administratively, the country is divided into 7 regions: The North, Northeast, Central Plains, East, West, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. Each of which has its own distinctive geographical character. The central region, encompassing the Bangkok metropolitan region and the central plains, is affectionately known as "Thailand's Rice Bowl". One of the world's most fertile rice and fruit growing areas, this is the economic and cultural heartland of the Thai nation.

Boundaries
Thailand in the late 1980s shared boundaries with Burma, Malaysia, Laos, and Cambodia. Although neither China nor Vietnam bordered Thailand, the territory of both countries came within 100 kilometers of Thai territory. Many parts of Thailand's boundaries followed natural features, such as the Mekong River. Most borders had been stabilized and demarcated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in accordance with treaties forced on Thailand and its neighbors by Britain and France. In some areas, however, exact boundaries, especially along Thailand's eastern borders with Laos and Cambodia, were still in dispute in the late 1980s. Topography and Drainage

Thailand - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Thailand is in Southeast Asia. It is almost right in the middle between India and China. The only way to get to Malaysia and Singapore from Asia by land is to go through Thailand.
Thailand is about two times the size of Wyoming. Many people live in the country. There are more than 60 million people in Thailand and more and more are added every year. Parts of the country are very crowded.
There are beaches in Thailand, and mountains, too. The Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand border part of Thailand. In the northern part of Thailand there are mountains almost 8,500 feet high!
The weather in Thailand is almost always wet. From May to September there are warm, rainy winds called monsoons. From November to March, there are dry, cool monsoons. The long, narrow piece of land called a peninsula that forms the southern part of Thailand is always hot and humid. If you like hot weather and a lot of rain, Thailand is a good place to be.

GEOGRAPHY
Size: Approximately 514,000 square kilometers. Topography: Chief topographic features include central plain dominated by Mae Nam (river) Chao Phraya and its tributaries. To northeast rises dry, undulating Khorat Plateau bordered on east by Mekong River. Mountains along northern and western borders with Burma extend south into narrow, largely rain-forested Malay Peninsula. Network of rivers and canals associated with northern mountains and central plain drain, via Chao Phraya, into Gulf of Thailand. Mae Nam Mun and other northeastern streams drain via Mekong into South China Sea. Soils vary. Topography and drainage define four regions: North, Northeast, Center, and South. Climate: Tropical monsoon climate. Southwest monsoons arriving between May and July signal start of rainy season lasting until October. Cycle reverses with northeast monsoon in November and December, ushering in dry season. Cooler temperatures give way to extremely hot, dry weather March through May. In general, rainfall heaviest in South, lightest in Northeast. Data as of September 1987
