NORTHERN THAI CULTURE Northern Thailand is distinct in many ways from the rest of the country. Traditionally called “Lan-Na” it has for most of its history been a separate kingdom. Northern Thai is a very different language from the official Bangkok Thai heard elsewhere in the country and varies considerably within northern Thailand itself. To complicate the picture further, northern Thailand is now the home to a number of different peoples, each with their own culture and language. In the far north west, Shan or Tai Yai people predominate. The Shan are closely related to the Thais and extend over a range centred in northern Burma (where Shan State has long been fighting for independence). In addition, the nine or ten hill tribes of Northern Thailand maintain separate cultures and languages, despite gradual integration. This ethnic and cultural diversity is one of the reasons this area is so fascinating for the visitor. 108/2 Charoenphratet Rd, Muang

History of Thailand - culture and background country
Thailand means "land of the free", and throughout its 800-year history, Thailand can boast the distinction of being the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized. Its history is divided into five major periods :
    Nanchao Period (650-1250 A.D.)
The Thai people founded their kingdom in the southern part of China, which is Yunnan, Kwangsi and Canton today. A great number of people migrated south as far as the Chao Phraya Basin and settled down over the Central Plain under the sovereignty of the Khmer Empire, whose culture they probably accepted. The Thai people founded their independent state of Sukhothai around 1238 A.D., which marks the beginning of the Sukhothai Period. Sukhothai Period (1238-1378 A.D.)

    THAI CULTURE THAI CULTURE

Thailand is located at the meeting point of the two great cultural systems of Asia-Chinese and Indian. In everyday life, Chinese culture has mixed very well with the Thai, whereas in Thai court Culture, which have been based mainly on Buddhism and Brahmanism, India has exerted a strong influence.
Thai culture can be divided in to 3 aspects: linguistic culture, court culture, and traditional culture.
    LINGUISTIC CULTURE
The Thai language, or Phasa Thai, basically consists of monosyllable words, whose meanings are complete by themselves. Its alphabet was created by King Ramkhamhaeang the Great in 1283 by modelling it on the ancient Indian alphabets of Sanskrit and Pali through the medium of the old Khmer characters. After a history of over 700 years, the Thai alphabet to day comprises 44 letters (including 2 obsolete ones), representing 20 consonant phonemes and 15 vowel signs, denoting 22 vowels, diphthongs and triphthongs.
As Thai is a tonal language with five different tones, it often confuses foreigners who are unused to this kind of language. For example, they have difficulty in distinguishing these 3 words from each other - àÊ×Í (suea, with rising tone), àÊ×èÍ (suea, low tone) and àÊ×éÍ (sues, falling tone) which means a tiger, a mat and clothes respectively.

Country Info Thailand Introduction Thailand General Data Thailand Maps Thailand Culture ... Thailand Time and Date Thailand Culture Back to Top Neither a static nor a revolutionary society, Thailand has always been able to harness the talents of its people, make effective use of its natural environment, and progress at an evolutionary pace. The tendency of the Central Thai-for centuries the controlling group in Thai society-to eliminate or suppress ethnic or religious differences was tempered by the Chakkri Dynasty, which had, for the most part, fostered toleration since assuming the monarchy in 1782. Cutting across rural and national strata was the system of patron- client relationships that tied specific households or individuals together as long as both patron and client saw benefits in the arrangement. In many respects, the dynamics of political and economic life were comprehensible only in terms of patron-client relations. Another orthodox system of complex values and behaviors that the majority of Thai shared through the 1980s was Theravada Buddhism. Complementing the religion were beliefs and practices assuming the existence of several types of spirits whose behavior was supposed to affect human welfare. The Buddhism of the Thai villagers, and even of poorly educated monks, often differed substantially from the canonical religion.

Language The Chilean variety of Spanish can be quite difficult to understand, as Chileans speak very quickly and fail to pronounce many consonants. Few people speak English (except in 3-star hotels and above), and other languages even less, though some German is spoken in the south.

    Food and Drink
    Media
The main newspapers are El Mercurio, La Epoca and La Tercera. Condor is published in German; News Review, in English. International television stations (such as CNN, HBO and so on) are transmitted by cable. For further information about Chilean media, please see our Links Page

    Shopping
Shops open between 9 and 10 in the morning and close around 8 at night; the smaller ones are generally closed between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. Shopping centers and supermarkets are open later (until 9 or 10 at night) as well as during weekends. Alto Las Condes, considered the most modern shopping mall in South America, will make Europeans and North Americans feel right at home. At the other end of the spectrum, a visit to the Mercado central (central market) in Santiago or any other city is a worthwhile taste of popular culture. Also recommended is a visit to one of many open-air markets offering handicrafts and artworks in wood, wool, clay, mimbre (wicker), silver and lapis lazuli (a semi-precious blue stone found only in Chile and Afghanistan).

Tue, 27-Sep-05 00:39 (Thailand Time) Thailand Culture Thailand's culture is about more than music and paintings. It arises from a complex system of mutual respect and politeness that binds the country's people together. Respectfully Yours
Thai culture evolves largely around Buddhism and respect for seniority, whether in terms of age, status or wealth. However, monks receive absolute deference and it is common to see healthy young monks sitting on buses while elderly passengers stand.
    Paying Your Way
Seniority is complex and involves unwritten obligations. For example, a manager dining with her staff will automatically pay the bill, regardless of the ages of those present. Some visitors find this unfair. A common assumption in Thailand is that foreigners are rich and should therefore pay higher prices than locals; hence the two-tiered pricing system seen at many tourist attractions.

    CULTURE Cultural Guidelines Do
Smile. Greet people. It is almost impossible to be overly friendly. You will be amazed at how many will remember your name if you give it. Don't
Don't take offence at questions like "Are you married?" "How much money do you earn?" No harm is meant by these queries. Do
Try to eat Thai food. It's not all spicy. Order a few dishes with some steamed rice and share them. That's the way Thais eat. Don't
Get annoyed if all the dishes you order don't come at the same time. Since Thais usually share everything they order, it doesn't matter to them which item comes out first. Do
Fuss over little children and let other people fuss over yours. Don't
Be surprised if a group of strangers pick up and cuddle your baby, passing him around with "oohs" "aahs" and kisses. Do
Be patient and stay calm in trying situations. If you lose your cool, you lose people's respect.

    Cultural Tips for Thailand
Thais are very easy going and would rarely tell you if you are doing something that offends them. However, here are few things to think about before you arrive:
    • Heads: Never touch an adult on the head. Thais consider the head to be the highest part of the body (spiritually) and would feel incredibly uncomfortable if you were to do so. Children under the age of 10 can be touched on the head in a playful manner, but the best rule of thumb is just to not do so.
    • Feet: On the opposite side of things, Thais consider the feet to be the lowest part of the body (spiritually) Therefore, it is extremely rude to do almost anything but walk with them. Do not put them up on chairs, ledges, etc to relax. Do not gain someone’s attention by tapping him or her with your foot. Do not open or hold open doors with your foot. This might seem a bit extreme and strange, but it will quickly become second nature.
