Protecting Thailand's National Treasures
Introduction by Willard Van De Bogart The Ayutthaya period carvings that have survived are well over 300 years old. As shown in the temple door at Wat Yai Suwannaram there is severe deterioration as a result of age and weathering. Chemical preservatives many times ruin the natural look of the original carvings as shown by the application to the wood on the upper temple carvings at Wat Yai Suwannaram. The legacy of these carvings not only comes from Thailand's history, but also from the ancient Khmer civilization which created Angkor Wat in the 12th century. When Thailand invaded Angkor Wat in 1431AD it took with them many of the artisans from that culture. All of the wooden temples in the classic Khmer period no longer exist. If Thailand does not pay more attention to its National Treasures it too will loose these magnificent works of art. The two photographs below show a completely weathered door from the Ayutthaya period that is currently being protected inside Wat Rakang, however, no kind of wood protection has been applied to it, and it will continue to deteriorate. The more recent carving to the right is the door currently at the Ayutthaya temple erected in Wat Rakang, and there are clear signs of the gold leaf being eroded as well as the wood.
The Ayutthaya Temple Door inside Wat Rakang
Photographs by Willard Van De Bogart These photographs clearly show signs of weathering. The concerns expressed in The Nation newspaper are very timely. The message is clear. Thailand must manage it's national treasures in such a way that they will be preserved for many years to come so all the world can appreciate their beauty.

A refuge, an escape, a meaningful choice based on understanding, all of which I suppose are considerations in the back of my mind before I return to Angkor Wat for the second time. However, the predominant thought is to return to a place where the intention to pay respect to the cosmos was foremost in the Khmer King's minds when constructing their temples between the 8th and 12th centuries. Click on Angkor Wat for larger view On January 29th of 2003 Angkor Wat, one of the greatest architectural achievements in human history, became the subject of political turmoil when crowds of angry Cambodians rioted in Phnom Penh destroying the Royal Thai Embassy, Thai Hotels, and Thai businesses. Rumor has it the Thai movie actress Suvanan Kongying made the comment that Cambodians stole Angkor Wat from Thailand. National pride was insulted, and again this poor country of peasants and political opportunists erupted once again. Many think it was all a ploy by the current Prime Minister, Hun Sen, to gain political advantage in the upcoming July elections. The truth may never be known, but it is a fact that Thailand sacked Angkor Wat in 1431AD. All of these events take place several weeks before my planned second visit to Angkor Wat. Borders were closed to both Thais and Cambodians, but international tourism was still possible albeit once again a sense of danger filled the Cambodian air.

Dangers in the indiscriminate use of radiocarbon determinations have been overlooked, and this has led to serious' and premature alterations in the prehistoric chronology of Southeast Asia and Europe. Without proper consideration of the geophysical evidence, and lingering problems in the carbon-14 dating technique, theories are being formulated which completely change and distort the prehistory of these two areas. Within the historical framework of Genesis, however, we can view the early beginnings of world civilization in a valid context.
Introduction
Two areas on opposite ends of the Eurasian continental landmass, Southeast Asia and 'Western Europe, are presently the scenes of revolutions in the interpretations of their prehistory and chronology. Carbon 14 dating was the catalyst which precipitated the revolutions. Those who adhere to the radiocarbon data recently published for the two regions claim that the prehistoric chronology must be transported hack to earlier periods. The implications of this theory are that:
1. Pottery, agriculture, and bronze were developed in South east Asia (in particular, Thailand) centuries before their appearance in other parts of Asia. 2. Metallurgy, and architectural and artistic innovations were utilized in Europe (especially Western Europe, and the Balkans) centuries poor to their development in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean empires.

Northeast Thailand / Basic Information
The northeast portion of Thailand, commonly referred to as Isan (pronounced E-San), is made up of 17 provinces (in alphabetical order): Buriram, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Loei, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat), Nong Khai, Roi Et, Sakhon Nakhon, Si Saket, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Yasothon. The word Isan denotes prosperity and vastness , which is appropriate only as far as vastness is concerned considering that the Northeast covers a total area of more than 170,000sqkm (65,620sqmi), or roughly one third of the entire country. Despite prosperity being denoted in its name, the Northeast today is the poorest part of Thailand. Isan was the center of an ancient civilization and even now, many customs are adhered to which date back to pre-historic times when the Khom people (the predecessors of the Khmer) held sway in the region. Relics and monuments still stand, attesting to the splendors of ages past. The Phra That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom, the

Excerpts
from "Ancient Wisdom for Modern Ignorance."
By Swami B.V. Tripurari. Clarion Call Publishing 1994. Here is a fascinating piece of information about Hindus and Mayans connection. According to Ambassador Poindexter, in his two volume 1930s treatise "The Arya-Incas", called the Mayan civilization was 'unquesionably Hindu' in origin. Alexander von Humbolt (1769-1859) an eminent, European scholar and anthropologist, was one of the first to postulate the Asiatic origin of the Indian civilizations of the Americas. What mysterious pyschological law would have caused Asians and Americans to both use the umbrella as a sign of royalty, to invent the same games, imagine similar cosmologies, and attribute the same colors to the different directions? The Aryan civilization of India is a logical choice for the beginning of the diffusion of our planet's civilization. American historian Will Durant, in his book 'Our Oriental Heritage', described India as the most ancient civilization on earth, and he offered many examples of Indian culture through out the world. He demonstrated that as early as the 9th century B.C. E. Indians were exploring the sea routes, and reaching out and extending their cultural influences to Mesopotamia, Arabia, and Egypt. Most modern day historians prefer to accept ancient Egypt and Babylon, as the most ancient civilization. Because they have no living representation and thereby pose no threat to the status quo.

Home Trips Registration FAQ ... GA Angels Volunteer Vacations Can Change Your Life . . . and Maybe a Little Part of the World as Well By Dianne Brause When we think of an ideal vacation trip many of us imagine white, sandy beaches with exotic drinks and delicious meals and fine entertainment. The place should be filled with beautiful and smiling women (or deeply tanned beach boys) in skimpy bathing suits. And of course it should be an amazing bargain so that we can tell our friends about how much we got for "next to nothing!" I have been both participant and guide on several trips of this type over the years. I have also participated in and led a number of very different kinds of trips in which the goal was not only to enjoy but also to give back to our hosts and their community in ways that were beneficial to both parties, trips that give host and visitor the opportunity to connect with one another in immediate and genuine ways. My volunteer vacations have generally been less luxurious and more strenuous than the storybook kind. Yet working with other travelers and community members on a worthwhile project has been significantly more rewarding than a typical tour. Many people's lives have changed (I'm one of them!) as a result of the contacts made and understanding gained during these short sojourns in someone else's territory. The volunteer component of a volunteer vacation might involve helping to build a clinic for cane cutters in the Dominican Republic or repairing a trail in the national park in Costa Rica or teaching African teenagers about the dangers of AIDS or protecting sea turtles from extinction or excavating the site of an ancient civilization with a global team of volunteers.

History
The Early People Archaeologists believe that Thailand was a major thoroughfare for Homo erectus Modern civilization did not arrive in Thailand until about 1,000 years ago. There is archaeological evidence that points to an area in central and southern China as a cultural heartland for the descendants of many of the peoples of Southeast Asia. These people began to appear in northern Southeast Asia in the first millennium A.D., and continued to migrate south, east, and west in waves over the following 8 centuries, settling primarily in what is now Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma). These people, who are called Tai , became dispersed over a vast area of space, sharing a cultural and linguistic commonality. Their descendants are the core bloodline of the Thai people of today, the Shan of northern Burma, the Tai people of northern Laos, the Lu of Yunnan province in southern China, as well as groups in Vietnam, on the Chinese island of Hainan, and others in northeastern India. The total number of Tai people today is estimated at 70 million. The early Tais lived in nuclear families with a dozen or two households forming an independently ruled muang , or village. They lived in raised houses in the lowlands, making a living from subsistence agriculture and gathering necessary items from the forest around them. In times of threat, either to economic stability or from outside aggression, many muang would combine forces. The organization was usually lead by the strongest village or family. What developed were loosely structured feudal states where both lord and villager benefited the lord from manpower and the villager from stability. The Tais expanded as ruling fathers sent sons out into the world to conquer or colonize neighboring areas, establishing new

Abundant natural attractions, including mountain and marine national parks, sparkling beach resorts, ancient ruins, archaeological wonders, year-round festivals and events, interesting culture, recreation, dining, accommodation, and shopping facilities, sincere hospitality, and impeccable service enable Thailand to offer every visitor truly memorable holidays.
For centuries known by outsiders as Siam, Thailand is a modern, predominantly Buddhist Kingdom where past and present mingle in evolving hrmony.
Essentially, Thailand's distinctive oftentimes unique characteristics stem from Chinese and Indian influences harmoniously blended by Thai eclecticism, rich natural and human resources and ethnic diversity, over 700 years of cherished independence, and a traditional culture delicately attuned to the time-honored Buddhist ideals of charity, tolerance, and loving kindness.
Touristically speaking, Thailand is divided into six major regions: the mountainous north, where elephants work forest and winter temperatures are sufficiently cool to permit cultivation of temperate fruits such as strawberries and apples; the sprawling northeast plateau, largely bordered by the mighty Mekong River, where a Bronze Age civilization flourished some 5,700 years ago; the central plain, a richly fertile fruit and rice growing area; the eastern coastl plain where fine sandy beaches support the growth of summer resorts; western mountains and valleys, resplendent with natural beauty in the form of numerous splendid rivers, waterfalls and caves; and the peninsular south where arresting scenic beauty and tropical islands complement economically vital tin mining, rubber cultivation, and fishing.

Capital of the first Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries, a number of notable monuments, which illustrate the beginnings of Thai architecture, can be seen in Sukhotai. Historic City of Ayutthaya
Founded in about 1350, Ayutthaya became the second Siamese capital after Sukhotai. It was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. Its remains, characterized by its prang or reliquary towers, and gigantic monasteries, give an idea of its past splendour. Bang Chiang Archaeological site
Considered the most important prehistoric settlement so far discovered in southeast Asia, Ban Chiang was the centre of a remarkable phenomenon of human cultural, social and technological evolution. The site presents the earliest evidence of farming in the region and of the manufacture and use of metals.
Apart from historical sites, Thailand is proud of The Grand Palace and many old, splendid temples that have been built hundreds of years ago and still in used until today. You can best picture fine Thai style architecture when you visit these places during the daytime. Yet at night some temples and the Grand Palace are dazzling with numerous lights. Even the street that leads to the Grand Palace is decorated with countless lights. At that point, the Grand Palace and the temples around are glowing from within in bright golden shade.

Isan or the northeastern region of Thailand makes up as much as one third of the country's total area. The region consists mostly of a large plateau with some small tributaries of the Mekong River , such as the Songkhram in the north, and the Mun and Chi in the south. Many of the rivers are merely short streams and much of the land is composed of sandy, friable soils, which is why there is always a drought problem in the dry season.
Isan, however, was an important cradle of civilization several thousand years ago. Archeological evidence points to the existence of ancient communities with a long history and unique cultural progress, ranging from the prehistoric era to the ancient Khmer kingdom, continuing on till the present day. The region therefore is a repository of diverse races including the Tai, Lao, Khorat Tai, Khmer Tai, and Phu Tai, scattered around the region. The varied mixture of racial groups, coupled with an inherited ancient civilization, gives rise to unique handicrafts and architecture. The local handicrafts, which originated from the accumulation of experience and imagination of their ancestors, passed on to generations of descendants, constitute the important heritage that indicates the flourishing culture of Isan amidst the deterioration of natural conditions.

Ancient Indian Architecture
This is a granite temple panel - one of many that show the splendor of Indian temple architecture. The Science of Architecture and Civil Construction was known in Ancient India as Sthapatya-Shastra . The word Sthapatya is derived from the root word Sthapana i.e. 'to establish'. The technique of architecture was both a science and an art, hence it is also known as Sthapatya-kala, the word Kala means an art. From very early times the construction of temples, palaces, rest houses and other civil construction was undertaken by professional architects known as Sthapati. Even during the Vedic times, there existed professionals who specialized in the technique of constructing chariots and other heavy instruments of war. These professionals have been referred to in the Rig Veda as Rathakara which literally means 'chariot maker'. The excavations of the ruins at Mohenjodaro and Harrappa (today in Pakistan) proved the existence of a developed Urban civilization in India. The Indus valley civilization is dated around 3000 B.C. Thus since the last 5000 years. India has had an urban civilization. The existence of an urban civilization presumes the existence of well developed techniques of architecture and construction. These techniques would no doubt have had been systematically stated in record books for transmitting them to the later generations as well for being used as reference media for actual construction. Unfortunately, as far as the Indus Valley civilization goes no such records have been preserved either as rock edicts, manuscripts, etc., or in folk tales and legends.

People often view northeast Thailand as a vast, arid land. Yet, a bird's eye view of the countryside from a low-flying aircraft disproves this perception and reveals, to the contrary, endless stretches of green fields. To the right and left, there is hardly a trace of barren land. Instead, a land blessed with different varieties of rice with blooming flowers foretelling the richness of the soil.
Lion sculptures of Wat Sra Bua Kaew
A little over two centuries after its founding, it would have been inappropriate to claim Khon Kaen - a province in the heart of E-san - an ancient city. But, a long history and very-old civilization unveiled through ancient fossils, as old as one million years, contradicts this view Coupled with discoveries of several, pre-histonc communities and 18th century (Buddhist Era) Khmer sanctuaries, such revelations deem it impossible to say this is not obviously reflective of the Thai people and their race.
In addition to geographical and geological evidence, its place as a center of education and technology and seat of Khon Kaen University, public works and other amenities, undoubtedly establishes Khon Kaen as the major city of E-san.
