My America (... Or Honk If You Love Buddha) Producers
Renee Tajima-Peña and Quynh Thai Genre/Year/Length
Documentary, 1997, 85 minutes Description
"Hilarious, insightful and highly original..."
San Francisco Examiner Part road movie, part memoir, Tajima-Peña recalls her childhood travels in the 1960s and '70s - back in the days when you could cross five states without ever catching a glimpse of another Asian face. Tajima-Peña comments, "Ross Perot once said, 'These immigrants aren't going anywhere, so you might as well get used to them. ' When I was growing up, assimilation meant being one homogenous society . I want to show that today the question is not how people become so-called 'real Americans' but how America has become its people." Between 1970 and 1990 alone, the Asian American population multiplied seven times over. Now the fastest growing ethnic group in the US, Asian Americans represent more than 50 nationalities and range from impoverished refugees to multi-millionaire entrepreneurs. Tajima-Peña embarks on a rollicking ride across this terrain - where battles over immigration, race, and multiculturalism rage on, and a new American identity is developing. Tajima-Peña's metaphorical guide along this journey is the film's "road guru," Victor Wong. An iconoclastic actor (The Joy Luck Club, The Last Emperor), ex-photojournalist, ex-Beat painter and wanderer, Wong was immortalized by Jack Kerouac in the novel, Big Sur. In My America, the 69-year-old Wong emerges as a complex, Buddha-like character, who has traveled the currents of post-war American life: the Beat Generation, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War era.

About Thai Club
Who are we?
We are an A-Status group of Northwestern University students dedicated to promoting and learning about Thai culture. Members include native Thais, Thai-Americans, and all others who are interested in Thailand or its rich culture. Our mission is to not only spread this culture to those who are interested but also to strengthen bonds between members and other students.
What do we do?
We hold at least three large events, one each quarter. They are events which showcase our traditions as well as contribute to the mix of cultures at Northwestern. Thai Club has achieved A-Status, qualifying for ASG funding, due to its biggest event: Thai Night.
In the past, we have also raised funds in coalition with Thai Clubs at other universities to build libraries in rural Thailand.
Social events are occasionally held for members and other interested people. Such events include movie nights, dinners, get-togethers, and potlucks. The club also takes trips to the local Thai temple in Chicago to celebrate Thai holidays.

Page 3 of 8 As Houston's Vietnamese community blossomed in the 1990s, the city's non-Vietnamese population discovered Vietnamese cuisine. During the 1992 Republican convention several Vietnamese restaurants were among those recommended by local guides. Today Houston's Vietnamese population is second only to that of Orange Country, California, and La's restaurants grosses $2 million a year. But an ever-growing portion is from the new Caucasian clientele that is gradually driving his Vietnamese following to less trendy eateries. "Now we have a face. Before it was just Blacks, Hispanics and Whites." "It was difficult in the beginning because we didn't have all the Vietnamese ingredients," La says, "but now I don't see any disadvantage to living here. The population is very large, and all the supplies we need for Vietnamese cooking are available."
Several blighted Houston neighborhoods have received a much-needed injection of commercial energy from Asian immigrants ranging from Southeast Asian refugees to Hong Kong tycoons. Their efforts have built a second Chinatown and new Korean, Vietnamese and Thai districts. And Asian American professionals by the thousands have relocated to service these newly Americanized consumers.
The influx of Asians infused the city's small but old Asian establishment with new political clout. Houston's Chinese and Japanese communities date back to the late 19th century, when displaced Chinese railroad workers and Japanese laborers settled there. Small in numbers, their presence attracted little notice from the white, black and Hispanic communities. Some Asians acquired economic clout with the success of their businesses, but even well into the 1970s the community¹s small numbers minimized political influence.
