Over the next five years, the number of Asian Americans will grow by 27 percent, to 14 million, a rate far faster than for the population as a whole, according to new projections from MapInfo Corporation, in Troy, N.Y. Projections from the Selig Center for Economic Growth, at the University of Georgia, reveal that Asian spending power will reach $455 billion by 2007, an increase of nearly 300 percent since 1990.

Asian American Voices for Affirmative Action by Paul Rockwell
Oakland, California
In a flip remark last June, University of California (UC) Regents Ward Connerly said: "I would be quite comfortable with only white and Asian students at UC, I have no problem with that."
It was Henry Der, Chair of Chinese for Affirmative Action who took Connerly and Pete Wilson to task. In his eloquent address to the UC Regents, August 20th, Der said: "If Asian American students were to attend certain UC campuses that are exclusively Asian and white, such segregated education would not prepare Asian American students to assume leadership positions in a multiracial California society. As a parent, I do not want any of my three children to experience or choose a segregated college education."
Pete Wilson's attempt to foment hostility between Asian American and African American communities has already backfired. Asian American support for affirmative action is growing. Throughout California's communities of color there is an awakened sense that an injury to one is an injury to all.
Filipinos for Affirmative Action, the Asian Law Caucus, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance; Kimi Lee, Executive Director of tbe University of California Student Association; and Eddie Wong, Western Region Rainbow Coalition Director, are playing an active role in defending affirmative action for America.

South Asian Americans Organize Tsunami Relief Efforts
(Private American relief agencies report millions of dollars in donations)
By Edmund F. Scherr
Washington File Special Correspondent

Washington South Asian communities across the United States are mobilizing resources to help fund relief efforts in the wake of the December 26 tsunami that devastated coastal areas of countries throughout the region and to support those who have lost friends and family members in the disaster.
American-based private relief organizations report being overwhelmed by donations and offers of help.
The United States has several large concentrations of immigrants from the affected nations and thousands of American-born citizens with ties to that region.
Southern California has well over 100,000 immigrants from the nations hit by the tsunami, and the San Francisco area has thousands of immigrants from India and Sri Lanka. California is also home to about half of America's 70,000-strong Indonesian immigrant community.
Chicago has an estimated 120,000 residents of Indian descent, and there are large numbers of South Asian immigrants in the New York, Detroit and Washington metropolitan areas.

Today, our nation’s public schools are becoming steadily more nonwhite, as the minority student enrollment approaches 40% of all U.S. public school students,... January 16, 2003 Press Release The most dramatic growth over the 1990s has occurred outside the City of Boston, according to the UMass-Boston researchers. While Boston saw the largest numeric increase in the Asian American population (13,896), towns posting the fastest growth rates were Malden, Shrewsbury, Quincy, Burlington, and Waltham. Within this fast growing population, the study reveals, are 15 Asian ethnic subgroups that have at least 500 members in metro Boston, led by the Chinese (almost 78,500), Indians (over 41,000), and Vietnamese (over 31,500). Other groups include Cambodians, Koreans, Japanese, Filipinos, Laotian, Thai, Pakistani, and Hmong. Settlement patterns among Asian ethnic subgroups are strikingly varied. While the Chinese are heavily concentrated in Boston, Quincy, and Malden, Cambodians are centered in Lowell with sizable shares in Lynn, Fall River, and Revere. The Hmong have its greatest numbers in Fitchburg, while Indians are the most populous Asian ethnic group in Waltham, Framingham, Burlington, and Shrewsbury.

Gangbangers, sex robots, and
babydykes, oh my! BY GARY MORRIS Now in its 19 th year, the San Francisco International Asian-American Film Festival (SFIAAFF) has become an increasingly plush and rather important venue for showcasing recent cinema from countries as disparate as Japan , Korea, India , the Philippines , China, and Hong Kong , and the Asian diaspora scattered throughout the U.S., Canada Australia docs , and shorts compilations, runs the gamut from the tired to the transcendent, stopping at all points in between. Some of the higher-profile entries are surprisingly disappointing, but there are plenty of gems hidden in the less heralded films.
The Flip Side
The Flip Side , a U.S./Philippine production directed by Rod Pulido, mines familiar territory in a too-familiar way to be very effective. Hunky Darius Delacruz (Verwin Gatpandan) returns from college obsessed with reintroducing his family to traditional Filipino culture — no easy task with a sister who’s an Americanized mallrat, a brother who copies the local gangstas, and parents who are caught between the old world and the new. Director Pulido writes some good laughs, and there are a few arresting images — some viewers will appreciate Gatpandan’s red-hot "Filipino jockstrap" scenes — but there’s little that’s new here.

The Asian Pacific Student Association (APSA) at the University of
California, Irvine wishes to extend an invitation to you and your
organization to our 16th Annual Asian Pacific American Awareness
Conference (APAAC), to be held on Saturday, February 3rd, 2001 at the UCI
Student Center. APAAC promotes understanding, awareness, involvement, and
unity, as well as providing resources and venues for inventive and
effective solutions. This year's theme, 'So What? Addressing Relevance,'
embodies a critical question we must ask ourselves about every issue we
face, and the action we must take when evaluating the issues. By
addressing the issues with important questions and making ourselves relevant, APAAC envisions a movement to create a stronger unified API political voice, the celebration of our heritage and achievements, and continued efforts to advance the Asian Pacific American community for years to come.
