Returning to Asia: Once a Refugee, Yoeun Revisits Thailand as a U.S. Navy Officer
By Steve Clark / Richmond Times-Dispatch Twenty Seabees from a U.S. Navy construction battalion in Guam went to Thailand two months ago to build a schoolhouse in a village. The officer in charge of the unit was Lt. Ra Yoeun, a former Richmond, Va., resident and a 1993 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. It was an assignment Yoeun was delighted to have. It gave him the opportunity to do something special for Thailand, where in 1979 he found a haven after escaping a chaotic existence in his native Cambodia. When he was a boy, Yoeun lived for three years in Thailand in a camp for Cambodian refugees. The camp was heaven compared with the hell he had been through in Cambodia. Ra Yoeun never should have lived to become an American naval officer. He should have died before the age of 10 in the infamous killing fields of Cambodia.

By Tom Lee Because gay Asian Americans share these unique experiences of identity, it is important for support groups such as GAPA to exist, insists Duazo. These groups create a supportive network and in turn form into their own communities tailored to the specific needs of the Asian American community. Involvement in these organizations also increases awareness and provides a voice for gay Asian Americans who otherwise would not have one, he says. As if to reflect the growing presence of gay Asian Americans, more and more gay ethnic and inter-ethnic groups have been established, such as Malaysian Gays and Lesbians Club, Pacific Friends, Lavender Dragon Society, and Trikone. As the population of Asian American grows, more and more young people will struggle with their cultural and sexual identities. Gay Asian support organizations may be the answer to empower these individuals, says Duazo.

The rapidly growing Asian American community is comprised of many diverse groups, including Chinese Americans, Filipino Americans, Japanese Americans, Korean Americans, and Vietnamese Americans. Large numbers of people from India, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia have also immigrated to the United States. Asian tribal peoples, such as the Iu Mien and Hmong, have established communities in the United States as well. According to the 2000 U.S. census, some 10.2 million Asian Americans live in the United States. They make up 3.6 percent of the U.S. population, a 199 percent increase from 1980 when they constituted only 1.5 percent of the population. Asian Americans reside throughout the United States, with California and New York home to the largest populations. However, the state with the largest percentage of Asian Americans is Hawaii. Other states with sizable Asian American populations include Texas, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington, Virginia, Florida, and Massachusetts.

It takes a while for members of those ethnic groups, especially first-generation immigrants, to assimilate into American society, and it takes time for restaurateurs to understand the cultural traditions that guide their work lives. And though Asian-Americans are tireless workers, they have an entrepreneurial spirit, a desire to own their own businesses, which in some cases can pose a problem in retaining them for long.

In a major element of the three-month program, a team of outreach workers will focus on gathering and distributing information in communities with ties to Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South India and Thailand – the areas hit hardest by the major earthquake and ensuing tsunamis that devastated South and Southeast Asia on Dec. 26. Familiar with these communities, the principal languages spoken at home, and neighborhoods where they are concentrated, the workers will visit and disseminate fliers on available resources in community centers, places of worship and social institutions, as well as such informal meeting places as grocery stores and restaurants.

Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs The University of Michigan was named one of the top universities for Asian American students in a recent article in A. Magazine: Inside Asian America The August/ September issue of A. Magazine lists the top schools for Asian Americans based on a wide variety of criteria, from retention and acceptance rates of Asian Americans, to the percentage of Asian American students, faculty and staff and the resources available for Asian Americans. The U-M is ranked 15th among research universities. The U-M's Asian American population has increased 40 percent in the 1990s to 3,642 students. Asian Americans are the largest student-of-color population on campus, representing 11.3 percent of the student body. The retention rate for Asian Americans is 85 percent. There are 320 Asian faculty members on campus, representing 8.2 percent of the faculty. Another reason for the high ranking is the active Asian American student body. More than 18 Asian American student groups including ethnic-specific student groups such as the Thai Student Association, Asian American Acting Troupe Descendants of the Monkey God and Asian Pacific American Women's Journal , an Asian American literary magazine. Students are active in planning cultural shows and workshops, promoting Asian American awareness and pride, and participating in community service.

Harland Williams appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Together they presented a video in which Harland visits a Thai family and accompanies them in various activities while insulting aspects of their life. More than being just poor humor at the family's expense, Harland Williams goes overboard by insulting sacred cultural and religious traditions. He demeans the father by implying that he prays to a nude female poster, he denigrates a monk in a Buddhist monastery, and he makes mock bowing gestures to supermarket employees. By hosting such offensive content, Jay Leno demonstrates a continued pattern of anti-Asian American remarks and programming on the Tonight Show.
This episode aired on late night television on a weeknight, and angered those in the Asian community who were able to view. There was no timely protest to the incident because few had the opportunity to see it. This website was established in direct response to this need to provide the Asian community with the ability to review such content for themselves in a timely manner, and ultimately decide whether to act to protest biased, anti-Asian American programming and to promote more positive roles for Asian-Americans in entertainment.

(805) 893-7766 (fax) Hung Cam Thai I am an ethnographic sociologist and my research is motivated by questions of how state policies (such as immigration laws) and race, class, and gender differences intrude on what we often view as the realm of the private, which is to say the family and intimate relations. I am therefore interested in the political and the social of the so-called private. My research employs both interviews and participant observations and aligns with feminist and race theories. I have published on topics of Vietnamese transpacific marriages and on racialized identities of second generation Vietnamese Americans. Courses I offer include: The New Second Generation Sociology of Asia America Intimacies in Asia America Masculinities Southeast Asian Americans Transnational Asia America ; and Vietnamese Migration . An organization for a new generation. By Ramon Gil for AIA, September 2003
Volunteering at a nursing home for Chicago Cares.
The largest Asian groups in the United States today are Chinese, Filipinos, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese. All of whom are past the one million mark. But there is a group not nearly as large but no less significant in their contributions to American society. In the year 2000, the US Census documented a little more than 150,000 Thai and Thai Americans living in this country. Many are first generation immigrants but a growing number are the second generation of American born Thais. And they are now making their presence known. In 1998, a few members of this highly educated demographic group felt the need to form an organization separate from the Thai Cultural Organizations that their parents belonged to. "There was no organization that served Thai American young professionals." said Joe Wana. Wana along with friends Paul Ark, Tammy Chiemmongkoltip and Allan Rangsithienchai were ready to build a community that catered to both their Thai heritage and their American upbringing. And so in December of that year, they founded the Thai American Young Professionals Association (TAYPA). And if growth is any indication of need, then there definitely is a growing population of young Thai Americans who are in need of a sense of belonging. In only 3 years, TAYPA has grown from a handful of dedicated volunteers to several hundred members with chapters in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston, and Washington DC.
