Film Festival brings out the Thai community. By Ramon Gil for AIA, March 2005
A scene from Baytong directed by Nonzee Nimibutr.
A few months ago, I head the pleasure of watching my first Thai movie. It was called "The Iron Ladies" about a gender bending volleyball team that beats all the odds as well as their homophobic critics. Little did I know the existence of a thriving movie industry in the land mainly known for Pad Thai and "The King and I." And the only reason I was able to watch it was due to the new system of renting DVDs by mail (yes, Netflix). But it's still not the same thing watching a movie on the small screen as watching it in a real theatre. The sad fact is, is that Thai movies rarely, if at all, make it into your local multiplex. Even the Netflix library is somewhat limited. Lucky for me I live a few blocks away from New York's ImaginAsian Theater and on March 31st, Bangkok meets Hollywood! For three days, the ImaginAsian will be featuring Thai Takes 2. A film festival celebrating the contemporary works of Thai and Thai American filmmakers. "Thai Takes 2 is the second Thai film festival in New York. Our objective for this festival is to increase awareness of Thai issues and provide exposure to emerging and established Thai and Thai American filmmakers." says Chanika Svetvilas, program director for ThaiLinks, organizers of the event. "Ideally, we would like to inspire the next generation of filmmakers and deepen the general audience's understanding of Thai culture, history, and politics." adds Svetvilas.

Title: Slowjam Sessions Volume One
Genre: Pop/Ballad
Rating: Slowjam Sessions is a compilation CD that features some of the best and brightest Asian Pacific American artists such as former American Idol contestant Jordan Segundo, Hawaii's Forte, Fame-winner Harlemm Lee, and many more artists singing their best love ballads. Some highlights that impressed me were "Journey Together" by Julissa and the remake of "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love" featuring Forte with original artist Glenn Medeiros. Although the production is uneven with some songs on the compilation (as it usually the case in compilations) there is enough good production here to warrant a listen. If you are looking for a taste of what APAs are doing in the music industry you can't go wrong with this one. Nelson Title: Masters of the Pillow (DVD- 2004) Director: James Hou UC Davis professor Darrell Hamamoto is a man on a mission to make the first-ever porn film featuring an Asian-American man and woman. Sure he has dreams becoming the next Larry Flynt and spearheading the Asian-American porn movement, but there's a lot more to that endeavor. The 50-year old professor got the idea from social frustrations over "White-America" stereotypes of Asian men as unsexy and Asian women as exotic and submissive. Despite controversy, Hamamoto is determined to create a product for the masses and change the public image of Asain-American sexuality. James Hou follows Hamamoto on his porn-production journey from start to finish with his adult actors, first-time actor Chun Lee and adult actress Layla Lei. "Masters..." also brings insight from various young and old Asian-Americans citizens, actors, filmmakers Justin Lin (Better Luck...) and Eric Byler (Charlotte Sometimes), playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly), and UC Berkeley professor Elaine Kim.

For food lovers, some events include: Korean Culture and Food Night, the"Barrio Fiesta" at Philippine Cultural Night which includes traditional dance, dress and food, Thai Cultural Night, and a "Taste of Asia," featuring a variety of Asian delicacies and entertainment with traditional Chinese, Hawaiian and Cambodian dance.
"We have a lot more to offer than just food," said Augustus Mangubat, Asian American Heritage Month events coordinator and NIU student. Updated 4 days 2 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Asian American An Asian American can be generally defined as a person of Asian ancestry or origin who was born in or is an immigrant to the United States The term Asian in a geographical sense simply refers to something or someone from Asia. ... The term "Asian American" is credited to the historian Yuji Ichioka who, in the late , used it to describe members of a new pan-ethnic radical political identity who shared common histories, experiences, and goals. In the United States, this term has widely supplanted the term " oriental " which was popularly used before the to describe East Asian peoples regardless of nationality, upbringing, or origin. Some have argued "oriental" is politically loaded and referenced a colonial "other" (see

Radish Kadian is typical of the Asian immigrants to the United States who are working to provide money and assistance to families and friends affected by the devastating tsunamis that struck southern Asia. “I think most of us woke up on Christmas Day with this shocking news of the disaster,” says Dr. Kadian, a physician and local activist in Washington, D.C.’s Indian American community. “It certainly dampened the festive spirit of Christmas." Dr. Kadian says the community mobilized to take action immediately after hearing news of the tragedy. But the timing of the disaster has complicated the relief effort. “A lot of people are on vacation and are not easily available,” he says. “And this is also the time when many of them travel to India with their children and others because schools and colleges are closed. So it has been somewhat more difficult than normal."

BOOMING ASIAN AMERICAN POPULATION IN METRO BOSTON CHALLENGES "MODEL MINORITY" STEREOTYPE
Cambridge, MA-May 27, 2004-The Asian American population in metro Boston grew more than 10 times faster than the rate of total population growth across the region during the 1990s, according to a new study by the Institute for Asian American Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. More than a dozen Asian ethnic subgroups - from Chinese to Hmong, Thai, and Pakistani - form metro Boston's Asian American population, which now totals almost a quarter million people and increased 70 percent during the last decade, according to the report. The new study is being released in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by the Metro Boston Equity Initiative of The Civil Rights Project at Harvard University. The most dramatic growth over the 1990s has occurred outside the City of Boston, according to the UMass-Boston researchers. While Boston saw the largest numeric increase in the Asian American population (13,896), towns posting the fastest growth rates were Malden, Shrewsbury, Quincy, Burlington, and Waltham.
