Would you like to teach yoga?
Teaching yoga can help you create a life where your beliefs, thoughts and actions flow from your core values to build a life of integrity and authenticity. The path of yoga is infinitely long and can be embraced as a life journey. Our yoga teacher training program is one step along that path providing a basic and solid foundation that gives our graduates the knowledge, skills, and confidence to begin teaching safely and mindfully. The Living Yoga Program, L.L.C ., is approved by Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level. This means that graduates of our program are not only certified through the Living Yoga Program, but also automatically qualify for registration with Yoga Alliance.
In addition to providing a broad-based education about yoga, we focus strongly on the skills required to teach yoga well. The program is oriented to teaching a mindful, gentle, and safe yoga class. However, everything learned is applicable to all styles of hatha yoga, including the more rigorous, athletic forms. While we have a great deal of sincerity and respect for our program, you will find it to be light-hearted and fun.

On new SBEC rules for emergency teacher certification in Texas
by Wm. Robert Johnston
13 November 2003 Dear Editor, Graves' comparison of teachers to doctors or CPAs is logically flawed. Certification procedures for these latter professions are more substantive. After all, if a doctor or CPA does you harm, you have legal recourse. Children harmed by inept teaching from traditionally certified teachers have no such recourse and often no access to competing services. But a greater flaw in Graves' position is her implied claim that ability to teach really depends on having been through existing education training. I have experienced education courses for teacher certification. While some were helpful in dealing with bureaucratic requirements, they were mostly irrelevant to real teaching. The teacher's unions are strongly opposing these rules perhaps because it undermines their claim that only certified teachers, not the unannointed, know how to teach. The public education establishment must maintain the facade that they and they alone can teach. How else can they deflect criticism of worsening student performance with demands for more and more money, the whole time opposing higher content area standards for teachers and competition from home schools or voucher programs? Suppose the SBEC allows some individuals, experts in their subject areas, to teach. Is this really worse than leaving students in overcrowded classrooms with teachers that may or may not know the subject but sure know the educational terminology?

2.29 Teacher Certification Program Process and the Office of Teacher Advising, Certification, and Placement
  • Approved Program Concept The preparation of teachers is a University-wide enterprise. It is necessary that all academic units involved in the preparation of teachers understand fully the teacher certification program process. The State of Texas utilizes the "approved program" concept in its system of teacher certification. The State:
  • establishes the regulations and standards by which teachers are certified (the requirements are independent of college or university degree requirements); approves colleges and universities to recommend students for teacher certificates in areas where programs have been found to be in conformity with State standards and are on file with the State; and issues the teacher certificate directly to the student, upon recommendation of an approved college or university.

    TEACHER CERTIFICATION STANDARDS IN TEXAS
    David H. Stewart
Today in Texas it is hard to maintain a spirit of cooperation when people in education campaign to remove all authority for teacher training from the disciplines, to annex more hours for courses in education, and to impose a single methodology for classroom performance. To be sure, if you look at specific certification programs across the state of Texas, you can find many, especially in private colleges, in which the disciplines and education are closely tied, where the certifying authority is shared, and where prospective teachers receive a respectable general education in the arts and sciences before entering their professional training. No one quarrels about such programs. Our troubles started when Texans, frustrated by inferior schools in the state, began trying to set new criteria for certification and new rules for accrediting institutions that train teachers. Once implemented, these proposals will have the force of state law and will determine the shape of education in Texas for many years. In Texas, many citizens are saying that we are not better off and that something should be done. So we now have a host of self-appointed committees, district and regional committees, alliances of groups, and commissions appointed by the Texas Education Agency, the state board of education, and even the governor.

Your Thoughts To see how schools across Texas do in hiring certified, experienced teachers, The Dallas Morning News created the Teacher Preparation Index (TPI). We gathered data from state agencies addressing three questions for every public school in the state:
  • How many of its teachers are fully certified and teaching in the subject area they're certified in?
  • How many of its teachers are fully certified in any subject area at all?
  • How many of its teachers have at least two years of teaching experience, in that school or anywhere else?
For each question, schools that rated in the top 10 percent of all schools were given a 10. Schools in the next 10 percent got a 9, and so on, all the way down to the state's bottom 10 percent, which were given a 1.
A school's TPI* rating is the average of its ratings on these three questions. Search for teacher certification levels at every public school in Texas. A MODEST STEP TOWARD COMPETITIVE TEACHER CERTIFICATION
    Jim Windham
Member, Texas State Board for Educator Certification
November 11, 2003 Recently, the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) narrowly approved a very controversial rule authorizing probationary certification to aspiring teachers who want to be licensed to teach using an alternative to the traditional certification route, typically through the colleges of education. There is nothing particularly revolutionary about this; in fact, there are over sixty so-called alternative certification programs in Texas, and approximately 25% of the new teachers licensed in the state last year used an alternative route. What is deemed by its opponents as so radical about this new route, and what made it so controversial, is the fact that, unlike the other alternatives, it circumvents the traditional “gatekeepers” to the profession—the state education bureaucracy and the colleges of educationand gives the school district superintendents the flexibility and discretion to manage their human resources by determining who is qualified to teach in the classrooms under their jurisdiction. There has been much confusion and misrepresentation in recent reporting about the new rule itself.

Texas - Return to the "What's Happening in the States?" Page - Updated on March 5, 1998 Texas The Texas Education Code (13.038) charged the State Board and Texas higher education system to develop a "comprehensive teaching induction program for the probationary period". Pilot programs were developed and implemented in and . In the latter year three programs were awarded state funding to pilot variations of the state's program. These provided grants to SW Texas State University, Abilene Independent School District, and Education service Center VI-Huntsville. Some good program evaluation and mentoring impact data were captured in the pilot program phase. In the Texas Commissioner's Advisory Committee on Teacher Induction published a mentoring program "framework" titled "Beginning Teacher Induction Plan for Texas Schools", Hurley, A. (1989). Austin, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. This framework was intended to provide guidance for programs which was based on the experiences of the initial pilot mentoring programs. These mentoring programs used both an assistance and assessment approach for work with the new teachers. The guidelines called for mentors and novice teachers to observe each other, for districts to provide released time for that work, and for districts to provide on-going support through support seminars and sharing sessions. Mentoring in Texas during that early pilot period was researched by a dissertation "The Dimension of the Mentor Teacher in Teacher Induction Programs: The State Perspective" Petersen, S. (1990). Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas. That study discusses the roles mentors play in support of new teachers and the challenges inherent to that role. The one year program includes cooperative supervision of new teachers (with no previous experience) by mentors, administrators, and university faculty members, orientation, and "specialized induction year...activities" approved by the district.

The Cost of Underpaying Texas Teachers
December 2004 My goal is to drive more of every education dollar directly into the classroom with the teachers and students, where it belongs. I would rather spend 1 billion dollars today investing in our future, than losing 13.3 billion dollars annually paying for failed policies of the past.
Low pay for Texas teachers is driving all too many of our best educators from the profession.
According to national studies, a shortage of good teachers in key areas is hurting student performance and that, in turn, causes too many students to leave school before graduation. For individuals without a high school diploma, job prospects are bleak. Dropping out costs men $365,707 in lifetime earning potential, and women $236,111. Dropouts cost the state and federal governments $1.4 billion annually in social costs, as they are six times more likely to be incarcerated and 2.7 to 3.7 times more likely to receive public assistance. Our state economy cannot remain healthy without a well-educated work force, and we cannot create and maintain that work force without the help of dedicated and qualified teachers. During the next session of the Legislature, school funding will be a major priority. Every school finance plan offered to address the current school funding crisis calls for local property tax relief and greater state investment in public education. The new state investments suggested in these plans begin at $1 billion annually.
