  • This is from the College of the Mainland's PACT program newsletter to
    teachers:

    "Our recent 'Pass the TExES' seminar was a smashing success! Mark Mentze did an excellent job reviewing students for the PPR exam. We had 47 student participants in this training, Saturday March 22. Friday evening, March 21, three of our PPR faculty were trained to integrate these study methods into the PPR curriculum as well as facilitate the same 5-hour 'Pass the TExES Seminar.' "
    "Did a good job of showing how Competencies are tied to questions. Good job of breaking down, describing, giving examples."

Overview Announcements Department Chapel ... Education Teacher Certification Search Department:
TEACHER CERTIFICATION IN TEXAS Abilene Christian University operates a state accredited or approved program for teacher preparation. We are authorized to recommend individuals who satisfactorily complete our program to the State Board for Educator Certification for certification as Texas teachers. Texas State Law requires local school boards to employ teachers that hold a valid Texas teacher certificate. The traditional undergraduate student may obtain a teacher certificate by completing the approved teacher education program at Abilene Christian University and passing the state required ExCET or TExES exams. They may then apply to the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) for the appropriate teacher certificate. Non-traditional undergraduate students usually come to ACU to obtain a teaching certificate through the bachelor of applied studies (BAS) program. These students are older than the traditional undergraduate and have some life experiences that may be used toward their Bachelor's degree. BAS students sometimes graduate before finishing their final certification requirements. Many will complete their requirements after graduation. Alternate Certification Route For other options for certification, call the certification office or SBEC for more information.

17. What is a supplemental certificate and when can I begin working on the requirements to add a supplemental certificate? A supplemental certificate can be added to an existing teacher certificate and allows you to teach in specific settings such as bilingual, ESL, or special education classrooms. Supplemental certificates can be added to an existing certificate by passing the appropriate TExES exam after the initial certificate has been awarded. There are courses offered by the College of Education which may help you pass these exams. You may take the courses before you complete your certificate but the supplemental certificate cannot be added until you have been awarded your initial teacher certificate. If you did not attend UT Austin previously, you must apply and be accepted to UT Austin as a transfer student. For further information, go to http://www.utexas.edu/education/admit.html

Teacher Certification No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 NCLB requires school districts to have a plan for all teachers in core academic subject areas to become "highly qualified" by the end of the 2005-2006 school year. Teachers hired after the first day of instruction of the 2002-2003 school year who teach core academic subjects in a Title 1, Part A program must be "highly qualified" when hired. "Highly Qualified" means that the teacher:
  • Has obtained full State certification as a teacher or has passed the State teacher licensing examination and holds a license to teach in the State;
  • Holds a bachelor's degree at a minimum;
  • Has demonstrated subject area competence in each of the core academic subjects in which the teacher teaches. USDE rule 34 DFR 200.55(c) defines the core academic subjects as English, reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts (fine arts), history and geography.

So You Want to Be a Teacher
The credential required to teach any grade from Pre-K through grade 12 in a Texas public school is a teaching certificate. The certificate identifies both the grade range and (at the middle school and high school levels) the subject/content area the teacher is certified to teach. There are three grade ranges: Early Childhood - Grade 4 (elementary school), Grade 4 - Grade 8 (with grades 4 and 5 typically housed in elementary schools and grades 6 - 8 housed in middle or junior-high schools) and Grade 8 - Grade 12 (housed in both middle/junior-high schools and high schools). This classification of the grade ranges is fairly recent; although the grade alignments may be different from those with which you’re familiar, they are the official certificate ranges specified by the State Board for Educator Certification in Texas (SBEC). As noted above, teachers are certified by subject/content area

Typically, beginning foreign language (FL) teachers in the United States must complete an "approved program" of teacher education in a four-year college or university, have a certain minimum grade point average, and complete a specified number of credit hours in the foreign language to be certified. To receive "approved program" status, institutions must demonstrate to their state department of education that they are fulfilling state standards. Most states model their standards after two statements developed by the FL teaching profession in the 1950s and '60s titled, QUALIFICATIONS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS OF MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES and GUIDELINES FOR TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (Paquette 1966). The QUALIFICATIONS are brief descriptions of "minimal," "good," and "superior" competence in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, applied linguistics, culture and civilization, and pedagogy. The GUIDELINES describe model programs, using the QUALIFICATIONS as minimum objectives (Wing 1984).
