TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS VIA DISTANCE LEARNING Many colleges and Universities offer K-12, teacher certification programs at a distance. Shown below are the links, point-of-contact information, and brief descriptions for the programs identified so far. When available, more will be added to this list, and some will appear in the DANTES External Degree Catalog. The list appears below in alphabetical order. We do not endorse one program over the other. Research carefully, giving consideration to cost, program length, academic and professional requirements, and how/when any on-campus courses or practice teaching may be accomplished. Critical Reminder : Most of these programs tend to be very state-specific and may even be limited to state residents. Also, teacher certification or licensure is controlled by the state in which the teacher plans to teach. Prospective teachers must take personal responsibility for insuring transfer or acceptance of credentials to a second state.

Texas Teacher Certification
From the DMN
The State Board for Educator Certification tentatively adopted on a 5-4 vote a new two-year teaching certificate that would allow college graduates to become instant teachers if they can pass a state test and their degree is related to the subjects they will teach. I think that overall, this is a good idea. One of the largest problems with public education today is that teachers spend far too much time focusing on new-age education approaches and creative ideas, usually at the expense of traditional education methods which, though they might seem old fashioned, do a damn good job of imparting the required knowledge. One of the problems with education programs today is that they have come to place emphasis more on the process of teaching than the end result. A teacher who has not been corrupted by exposure to these process-oriented methods is more likely to give students a quality education. I did find this quote rather humorous:
Teachers sharply attacked the proposal, calling it a slap at their profession and charging that it would put incompetent teachers in classrooms across the state.

Consider:
As Kalahar indicated, subject mastery and a desire and ability to instruct are essential requisites of a qualified teacher. It is those qualities that the TEA should assess, nurture and evaluate in a prospective teacher, whether such individual is a recent graduate of a college of education or a college of engineering, or is one seeking new direction through a mid-life career change. To that end, certification by written examination is no more a useful vehicle of forward progress than a cart-driven horse.
And those responsible for the intellectual growth and development of a future generation should be automatically certified to do so following completion of an appropriate internship. A blueprint for such a program can be found at the Upper Valley Teacher Institute (UVTI).
UVTI is a fully-accredited teacher-preparation and certification-program, centered in classrooms and tailored for adult college graduates who have usually had other careers before deciding to become teachers, but the same practices and principals should apply to a recent college graduate seeking a career in education.
UVTI has reversed the amount of time usually allotted to academic theory and classroom practice. Participants work full time as classroom interns, supervised by mentor teachers. Practical experience is reinforced through weekly seminars and supervisory support. At the end of ten months, graduates master topics usually included in traditional academic programs, as well as having gained a year of teaching experience. Practical, on-site training is the hallmark of UTVI. Of the 400 graduates of the program, at least half currently work in Vermont and New Hampshire schools and many others teach in other states.
