The Attorney General's Role
The Attorney General protects consumers and the legitimate business community by filing civil lawsuits under the Deceptive Trade Practices Act and other consumer protection statutes. Lawsuits are filed on behalf of the State of Texas and the public good. This agency cannot represent individual consumers. Nevertheless, some legal actions do produce restitution for individual consumers. Read about major Attorney General consumer protection cases on the lawsuits and settlements page. Consumer Complaints filed with this agency may form the basis for an investigation into a company's business practices. In some cases, significant numbers of complaints about a business may give rise to legal action, not on behalf of the individual complainants but to enforce state law. The decision to investigate or file a lawsuit is based on a number of factors. Consumer Education is a third vital part of the Attorney General's mission. The best consumer protection is widespread public awareness of consumer rights and common snares. This Web site therefore offers information about consumer issues as well as a consumer alert page and a consumer alert e-mail notification subscription.

Bibliography In 1999, the 76 th Public School Investments Because of the way school districts are funded in Texas, nearly every district has excess funds at certain times of the year that are not needed to pay expenses of the district for days, weeks or even months. Property-rich districts, for example, receive the majority of their revenues from local property taxes; consequently most of their revenues arrive early in the calendar year when property taxes are due. Property-poor districts receive most of their revenues from the state, and state monies are distributed at scheduled intervals throughout the year. In both cases, the school districts receive large sums of cash that will be used over time to pay salaries, buy goods and services and pay for other district expenses. Until the money is needed, wise districts invest this excess cash in accounts or instruments that mature or are available in time to meet their anticipated expenses. The idea is to leave funds fully invested until the money is needed.

LAREDO - Two South Texas public schools have been deemed "persistently dangerous" campuses, and their students must be allowed to transfer to safer schools, state education officials said. Under federal guidelines, the Texas Education Agency must designate a school as persistently dangerous if it reported three or more mandatory expulsion incidents per 1,000 students in each of the previous three years. Such offenses include the use or possession of a weapon on campus, arson, murder, sex crimes, aggravated assaults and felony drug and alcohol violations. The schools - the W.A. Todd Ninth Grade Campus in the Donna Independent School District and United South High School in Laredo's United Independent School District - must develop corrective action plans and submit them to the state within 30 days. "There's going to be a lot more supervision in schools," Donna Superintendent Joe Gonzalez said. "We want to focus on teaching and learning and not waste valuable time disciplining students." The only other year Texas listed persistently dangerous schools was 2003, when six campuses were identified. But after appeals, all six were able to reverse the classification.

Among the students enrolled in the entering class of 2004, 78 percent were Texas residents and 45 percent were women. All entering students had completed work for the baccalaureate degree, and 4 percent had obtained graduate degrees. Members of the entering class represented 35 undergraduate majors from 50 undergraduate colleges throughout the nation. Students learn from one another, and the diversity exhibited by members of the entering class is an asset. Every effort is made in each step of the admissions process to assess all characteristics of each applicant, cognitive as well as non-cognitive.
