Posted Aug 2, 2005, 2:19 PM ET by Uncle Roger The constitution says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" which is generally interpreted as meaning the government should leave the whole business of religion up to the people to figure out on their own. Specifically, the government should not promote any one particular religion over any others.
But a bible-only class? Bzzzt. Wrong answer!
Posted Aug 2, 2005, 3:00 PM ET by Duane Don't I remember correctly that in high school social studies classes we learned all about world religion and their associated texts? Granted we didn't go through the Bible per se, anymore than we read the Upanishads, but we did certainly get a taste of all of them - [timeframe][name of prophet][name of holy book][commandments][afterlife] and so on.
I remember it vividly because the class was taught by Mr. Raiss, a devout Muslim who was rumored to keep a prayer rug in the closet, and one particular class where he ruthlessly mocked a student for pronouncing it "mozzlem", making him say it over and over again (without telling him what was wrong) until finally he said, "Do you see a Z in that word? I see an S. Musslim." I always remembered that as the proper pronunciation, though.

The following quotations, from the "Proceedings for 1938-1939," document the organization of the Texas Association of Music Schools: First Meeting At the convention of the Texas Music Teacher Association held at Waco, Texas, on June 15, 1938, a group of teachers of music in Texas colleges met in a symposium with Dr. William E. Jones as chairman. After some preliminary remarks by Dr. Jones, he called on Dean Henry E. After Dr. Jones briefly outlined the objectives of the proposed organization, it was moved by Miss Landrum, seconded by Dr. Bain, that there shall be a Texas association of music schools. S TUDENT A SSESSMENT AND P ERFORMANCE Released: November 13, 1998
There are many environmental and social factors that can affect how well students perform in school. Class size, teacher training, or whether the parents are involved in the child's education can impact how well students will perform. Further, whether a child went to preschool, if he/she is hungry or has other health or personal problems will also affect student achievement. Many of these factors are addressed in other reports in this series on education (see the Measuring Up report entitled Overview of Education in Texas for more discussion). This report will focus on the standards and tests schools used to measure student and school performance.
The primary method for evaluating the academic achievement of students in Texas public schools is a standardized test called the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS). Although the TAAS test was originally designed to measure individual student's achievement, in recent years the results of the tests have also been used to evaluate groups of students as well as schools and school districts. TAAS results are also used to determine whether students should be allowed to graduate. Student Performance
The Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) measures how well Texas students are faring academically in basic subjects such as math, reading, and writing. TAAS tests are administered to grades 3 through 8 and the 10th grade. More students in Texas are passing the TAAS tests than ever before. The percent of all students who passed the TAAS test increased by 39 percent for math, 14 percent for reading, and 11 percent for writing between 1994 and 1998. The greatest improvements have been seen in the math test scores, with African American students showing the largest gains in math (from 55% in 1996 to 64% just one year later).

Schools get good marks across Texas
Scores up, dropouts down; HISD trails state average
By JANET ELLIOTT and KATHRYN A. WOLFE
AUSTIN If the state of Texas were a school district, it would receive a recognized rating this year because of rising test scores and declining dropout rates, Education Commissioner Jim Nelson said Thursday. RESOURCES Check your school: Accountability ratings for individual schools in the TEA's Houston region. TEA: Press release explaining the ratings. Back to school: HoustonChronicle.com resources, including links to school districts.
"This is outstanding performance for the state as a whole," said Nelson, who gave students, teachers and parents the credit for the achievement. But there was bad news for the state's charter schools. Of the 106 schools rated low-performing, 43 were charter schools.

School nurses should be trained in protection, detection, and treatment of victims of such events and in the command and control management techniques of the logistics of such a situation. Video communications network serves more than half the school districts in the region. TM video communications equipment for its wide-spread distance learning project. Currently, more than half the school districts in Region XIII are covered by the network of Polycom ViewStations, and the Texas Education Service Center hopes to link every district in the near future. Region XIII of the Texas Education Service Center is deploying video communications to ensure equal opportunities for access to content for every participating district regardless of size or location. Although there are several large districts in the region, most of the districts are remote and very small, the smallest comprised of only 26 students. Region XIII administrators believe interactive video communications will improve the quality of education for students in Texas, especially those who are advanced or have special needs. In addition, teachers, administrators and staff members now have greater and more convenient access to professional development opportunities that some currently must travel hours to attend. Region XIII developed a strict set of criteria to evaluate interactive video communications systems and chose Polycom's ViewStation for its smooth, full-motion images at up to 30 frames per second, exceptionally clear voice quality, ease of use and affordability.
