Three Organizations Prepare for Next Disaster
As disaster relief and human service organizations begin to transition from providing immediate emergency services to attending to the longer-term needs of Hurricane Katrina victims in the devastated areas and across the country, the Red Cross, The Salvation Army and United Way of America join together to ensure victims receive the kind of services each organization provides to those in need. American Red Cross
The role of the Red Cross is to build a bridge of assistance by providing food, shelter, counseling, financial assistance and other emergency needs for victims of disaster until they can access more permanent aid provided by local, state and federal agencies. After the emergency period ends, the Red Cross assists by coordinating services with other agencies such as The Salvation Army and United Way to help families affected by disasters. The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has an extensive disaster response and recovery infrastructure able to meet the short-term and long-term needs of disaster survivors. Through its partnerships with other faith-based and non-faith based organizations, and its long-term working relationships with federal, state and local governments, the Army is prepared to provide food, clothing and shelter in the aftermath of storms, and then utilize its network of nearly 1,300 major centers of operation, and the collective efforts of nearly 50,000 officers and employees across the United States to assist survivors with long-term recovery needs that include counseling, pastoral and medical care, child care, senior citizen care and financial assistance.

Breakthroughs in Sickle Cell Disease Research
Dr. Philippe Leboulch, a highly regarded professor and researcher at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, will give a talk at UTD on Friday, Sept. 30, about the possibility of gene therapy cures for sickle cell disease. The lecture will be held at 3:15 p.m. in UTD’s McDermott Library Auditorium, and a question and answer session will follow. Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the hemoglobin protein found in red blood cells. In persons with the disease, the red blood cells become sickle, or crescent, shaped due to the abnormal hemoglobin and often become lodged in blood vessels.

Media Center
Our mission is to support the School of Education's faculty in the development of independent, confident, competent users of technology who are prepared to provide leadership in a variety of institutional roles and settings.
Philosophy
The Media Center bases its work on four fundamental beliefs:
  • Technology is more than hardware. At its core, "technology" is the systematic application of what we know to what we do. "Real world" problems related to health and wellness, human growth and development, educational administration, and teaching and learning demand solutions based upon the acquisition and application of knowledge. Computer, communication, video, and other technologies are not in and of themselves solutions. Technological hardware serves thoughtful human beings in pursuit of solutions. Technology liberates only when individuals control technology. Individuals who exert personal control and adapt technological devices to individual uses are better prepared for the next century than individuals who are dependent upon "technologists" or other forms of support. Therefore, faculty and students of the School of Education must acquire knowledge, skills, and experience sufficient to permit intelligent independent applications of technology. Professors and graduates must be prepared to exercise sound judgment regarding appropriate uses and limitations of technology. The School of Education must create an environment where individual control of technology is expected, encouraged, and developed.
