SCHOOL LIBRARIES . The development of school libraries in Texas was slow and sporadic. Since few library records were kept by county and urban school districts in previous centuries, data were not gathered on the earliest attempts to establish school libraries. However, fragmentary records can be gleaned from the early publications of various libraries and associations. Before 1854 schools across the state undoubtedly had small collections of books. One of the earliest accounts of a school library shows that a New Braunfels school started a library in 1854. Another early library was established in 1881 at St. Edward's Academy in Austin. Although the state Constitution of 1845 qv provided for the establishment of free schools, it was years before the state had a well-organized, satisfactory public school system. Beginning about 1884, school districts started to build permanent facilities and to plan for future growth, and school libraries became more numerous. Ball High School in Galveston established a library in 1884. The same year a school library was started in Omen. In 1885 the Weatherford High School library had its beginning. A Tyler school, encouraged by Anna J. H. Pennybacker, qv began to build a book collection in 1887. Alvin High School started a library in 1890. Other school libraries established in the nineteenth century included Paris (1893), Houston (1894), Waxahachie (1897), and Dallas (1898).

An AskERIC Response
August 2002
Question
Do you have any research that shows school libraries have a positive impact on students?
Response
Hello, In response to your request for information on the positive impact of school libraries, I conducted a sample search of the ERIC database. Below I have appended my search strategy, 15 citations with abstracts, and directions for accessing the full text. These citations may represent an introductory, rather than exhaustive, search for information on your topic. If you would like to conduct your own free ERIC database searches via the Internet, please visit the ERIC Database Help pages for directions or go directly to http://www.askeric.org/Eric/ to search. I have also attached some related resources that may be helpful. Thank you for using AskERIC! If you have any questions or would like further assistance, please do not hesitate to send another message. MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
This page contains links to research reports and other documents that show that school libraries make a difference to student achievement; that school libraries have a positive impact on students and on learning. There are documents from a number of countries. There are also links to articles in professional journals and newspapers that are based on these documents. This page is intended to help school librarians to answer the question, "Do school libraries make a difference?".
School Libraries Work!
This is a Research Foundation Paper published by Scholastic Library Publishing; it brings together research findings from almost ten years of school library-related research. The preface notes, "A substantial body of research since 1990 clearly demonstrates the importance of school libraries to students' education. Whether student achievement is measured by standardized reading achievement tests or by global assessments of learning, research shows that a well-stocked library staffed by a certified library media specialist has a positive impact on student achievement, regardless of the socio-economic or educational levels of the community."
Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries
