As you know, ceramics are made from clays and other materials which produce undesirable fumes during fir firing. The primary fume is carbon monoxide. This is produced during the oxidation of organic material. Fumes can also contain sulfur oxides, hydrogen flouride and volatilized metals. These fumes are unhealthy and should not be breathed. Because gases expand when heated, the fumes will not stay inside the kiln unless the kiln is kept under negative pressure. From a health and safety standpoint, it is important to remove fumes from the work area. What good does venting do? Fume removal is the number one benefit of venting. The Orton system collects and dilutes the fumes with room air so they can be removed from the classroom to the outside or exhausted through your school's vent or exhaust system. An automatic vent also adds safety to firing. When manually venting, you need to prop and then close the lid of the kiln. The Orton vent eliminates this because the vent stays closed. Also, the maitenance staff isn't burdened with opening and closing the kiln for venting.

At worst, they may suspect that you are hiding something, deliberately misleading them by burying meaningful measures in a deluge of detail. How do I know? I've just returned from two conferences with directors of Parent Information Resource Centers, or PIRCs, as they are known on the circuit. I was invited to present by the U.S. Department of Education, the sponsor of the conferences. I listened to experienced, school-smart parent leaders tell me of their travails attempting to make sense of basic vital signs about a school's health, using school accountability reports. Three of these parent leaders were from California, and the other 42 represented most of the states in the union. (There are more than 70 PIRCs across the county.) Of the bunch, only the PIRC leader from Colorado was satisfied with the clarity and usability of her state's reports. The rest expressed dismay, disappointment, and anger at the obtuse and obscure ways that their state leadership reports results.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) program has been in operation since 1976. The SROs work in partnership with the schools and community to address juvenile challenges. The SRO is involved in educating the students, parents, and faculty of the school to which he/she is assigned. They educate students on leadership and how to make positive choices. They instruct students, parents and faculty on drug recognition and detection of drug use. They advise the students of the consequences of committing a criminal act. They provide support for teachers when confrontational situations occur. The SROs provide classroom presentations of the D.A.R.E. program and the consequences of gang involvement. They provide instruction on law, personal responsibility, and one-on one counseling sessions with students to help develop a positive self-image.
