Are You Covered?
Too many parent groups are putting themselves (and their leaders) at risk by foregoing insurance coverage. Our experts can walk you through the fine print and the next steps.
By Vanessa Parks With a moon bounce, three-legged races, and popcorn machines, most PTO volunteers see a carnival as a festive way to boost school spirit, raise some money, and, of course, have a little fun. But from where Elgin Allen sits, that same carnival looks more like a little shop of horrors. The moon bounce? A chance for someone to get hurt, perhaps seriously. Ditto the three-legged race. The popcorn machine? A fire hazard. And while many parent group leaders assume (or are told by a school administrator) that their group is covered by a school or district insurance policy, experts strongly recommend that parent leaders confirm that assumption before taking a large risk.
Do we really need insurance?
Which policies should we purchase?
The third category is property coverage, which protects personal property, including fundraising merchandise, against damage or loss due to theft or natural disasters. If that copier you purchase for your PTO is ruined in a flood or that $20,000 shipment of candy melts due to a refrigerator power outage, then your relatively inexpensive property coverage could come in handy.
The PTO Today Plus Advantage
Until the advent of PTO Today Plus (formerly the National PTO Network), independent parent groups really only had three unattractive options for insurance: 1) no coverage at all; 2) quite expensive coverage from a local insurer (with no/little parent group experience); or 3) coverage from a parent group specialist without the benefit of a group rate or group expertise.

The Role of the PTA
(Page 1 of 1) The PTA is a powerful organization affiliated with many schools across the country. Here's how you can join the club. By GreatSchools.net Staff If you picture the PTA as just a small crew of moms who meet now and then to plan bake sales, you may be in for a big surprise. The Parent Teacher Association, or PTA , is a huge and very influential nationwide organization with state and local affiliates throughout the country. The national PTA is headquartered in Chicago and promotes parent involvement in school communities. It is also a powerful lobbying organization in state legislatures and in Washington, D.C., advocating on behalf of students and schools. PTA vs. PTO

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT This chapter reviews the communications and community involvement functions of the Rockwall Independent School District (RISD) in the following sections:
A. Communications and Public Relations B. Community and Business Partnerships C. Volunteer and Parental Involvement
Effective communication between the school district and the local community results in valuable community partnerships, increased parental involvement and more school volunteers. Schools and school districts must consider every citizen, parent, teacher, local business, economic development organization, nonprofit organization and retiree as a valuable resource and try to involve them in district activities and decision making. School districts typically communicate with their stakeholders through publications, community forums, local and area media, board meetings, special events, community access television and Web sites. Communities with excellent school systems attract new businesses, homebuyers and taxpayers. Effective community involvement efforts can enhance the quality of educational programs and exponentially expand the resources of a school district. BACKGROUND RISD is a fast growing district located 30 miles northeast of Dallas. The district grew 28.9 percent from 1998-99 to 2002-03. Student demographics shifted during this period increasing the Anglo student population by 22.4 percent and the minority student population significantly more. The African American student population increased by 90.1 percent and the Hispanic student population by at 80.7 percent (

Some of the advisory groups include district employees, some include community members and others include a combination of both. They cover a wide variety of topics and interest areas. Exhibit 3-22 presents a listing of DISD's districtwide advisory committees. Exhibit 3-22
