About the Artist

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was born in 1746 in a village in northeastern Spain. As a young man, he may have tried bullfighting, but this is only one of the many uncertainties historians have concerning the life of this intriguing man. By the age of 20 he had gone to Madrid where his earliest works were commissions for churches. In 1786, he was named "Painter to the King" for Charles III. He then became "First Painter to the King" for Charles IV in 1799. His paintings of the royal family were often subtle revelations of the greed and corruption that existed within the ruling class.
Goya gained both financial success and fame early in his career, but his personal life was filled with tragedy. He and his wife Josefa Bayeu had many children, perhaps as many as twenty, but only one lived to maturity. In 1792, he suffered an illness that left him almost totally deaf. After a nearly fatal illness in 1819, he bought a house near Madrid that he named La Quinta del Sordo, or "The House of the Deaf Man."

The gardening course required 50 hours of community service. Through the Adopt- a-School program, Curtis-Win partnered with the Army's 62nd Engineer Battalion, 13th Corps Support Command, from Fort Hood, Texas. Their initial project was a huge success. Volunteer civilians and service members set up an outdoor classroom for a local school with a science lab, pond, apple trees, greenhouse, and herb, vegetable and butterfly gardens. Logging in at over 3,000 volunteer hours a year, Curtis-Win was just getting started.

In order to stave off the closure of any of the Coastal Bend's three military installations — Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Naval Air Station Kingsville and Naval Station Ingleside — local officials have organized the South Texas Military Facilities Task Force.
The task force, composed of leaders from area economic development corporations and current and former political officials, has rallied around the bases by protecting airspace from encroachment, enhancing roads and entryways that lead to bases and hiring consultants both locally and in Washington.

The Clinton Adminstration's radical hatred of the American military has a comic opera quality. Americans numbed by the relentless stream of Clintonesque military blunders can find a diversion just across their northern borders. It's the same basic plot in Canada, just more advanced, sort of a preview of things to come in the U.S. The plot? Cut military spending, commit to United Nations entanglements, destroy military culture and chip away at readiness with politically correct personnel policies.
Since the Korean War, Canada's military experience has been mostly limited to U.N. Peacekeeping Operations. The exception is the thousands of Canadian men that enlisted in U.S. military forces in order to serve in the Vietnam War.
In Canada, the government dismantled the airborne regiment because it was too politically unreliable to support Canada's socialist policy planners. They used the pretexts of an illegal killing in Somalia and hazing rituals.
