Students not enrolled in an ROTC program may be permitted to take ROTC courses as electives with the advance approval of the professor of military science, the professor of aerospace studies, or the professor of naval science, as appropriate, and the concurrence of the head of the School of Military Sciences. State law permits the substitution of 3 hours of history and 3 hours of political science for a student in the program of an approved senior ROTC unit. With the approval of the dean of the appropriate college, students successfully completing their required four semesters of upper-level ROTC curriculum will be deemed to have completed the equivalent of Political Science 206 or 207 plus History 105 or 106 (or another appropriate course) for a total of 6 hours. Students in the College of Liberal Arts may not substitute upper-level ROTC courses for this requirement. Nominations to a United States Military Academy
Members of Congress can nominate a number of young people from their district to compete for admission to a United States Military Service Academy, and then the academy chooses its cadet class from a national competitive pool of students. The United States operates five Military Service Academies, all of which offer a rigorous four-year education program resulting in a bachelor's degree. Each academy seeks students who are strong academically or athletically, with various SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) score requirements. A student wishing to compete for admission should seek a nomination from my office early in their senior year in high school, at the latest. After graduation, cadets go into active duty or continue their education. To apply, download this initial application PDF version ), complete it, and get it to Denise Blanchard in my Brownsville District Office.  We will send interested students other forms and candidate records to be completed. The final decision for cadet selection is the sole responsibility of the academies themselves: four academies use the nomination process: The U.S. Naval Academy

Academy Nominations
“Our military academies offer an educational opportunity equal to none other in the world,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Acceptance to a military academy is not limited to those from wealthy families or those who hail from powerful dynasties. Those who exhibit fortitude, persistence, determination and focus can take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity. All area students should investigate the requirements and compete for a nomination to one of these fine institutions. I extend a special challenge to minorities to embrace this chance to get a first rate education.”

(CBS) With the war in Iraq well into its third year, and 138,000 U.S. troops still on the ground there, it has become an urgent problem for the military to find enough fresh recruits to carry on the fight.
Both the Army and the Marine Corps have fallen short of their recruiting goals, and signing up new soldiers has become a challenge, even in places that have always been sure bets for military recruiters, places like San Diego, Texas, population 4,700, where tradition runs deep. San Diego has already sent more than 30 soldiers off to the Iraq war

Welcome to the Department of Physician Assistant Studies of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). The UTHSCSA Physician Assistant Studies Program America's Best Graduate Schools at number 14 in the 2004 edition. (UTHSCSA News May 13, 2003) THE PROFESSION: The physician assistant (PA) is academically and clinically prepared to provide healthcare services with the direction and responsible supervision of a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy. The physician/PA team relationship is fundamental to the PA profession and enhances the delivery of high-quality health care. Within the physician/PA relationship, PAs make clinical decisions and provide a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and health maintenance services. The clinical role of PAs includes primary and specialty care in medical and surgical practice settings. PA practice is centered on patient care and may include educational, research, and administrative activities. The role of the PA demands intelligence, sound judgment, intellectual honesty, appropriate interpersonal skills, and the capacity to react to emergencies in a calm and reasoned manner. An attitude of respect for self and others, adherence to the concepts of privilege and confidentiality in communicating with patients, and a commitment to the patient's welfare are essential attributes of the graduate PA.

    TEXAS TROOPS TO TEACHERS
    Backgound and Information
For many years, the State of Texas has experienced a critical shortage of teachers in the areas of Special Education PreK-12, Elementary Bi-Lingual PreK-6 and Secondary 6-12 Math and Sciences, and has sought to provide the opportunity for more male and minority teachers to enter the classrooms of Texas. To this end, then Governor Ann Richards signed a Letter of Intent with the Secretary of Education and the Secretary of the Army on March 10, 1992 to develop and implement a plan that became known as the Texas Military Initiative (TMI). Because of its nationally recognized network of alternative certification programs, Texas was selected as the pilot state to implement collaborative programs between selected Army posts and adjacent Alternative Certification Programs to facilitate the transition of degreed soldiers out of the military and into the classrooms.
Although the Army led in this program, veterans from all services participated in the Military Initiative. Well over 350 veterans were hired as teachers through the program. Of these veterans, 88% were male and 42% were minorities. Feedback on these programs from superintendents, principals and parents was extremely positive.
During the massive downsizing of the military services in the early 1990s, the Troops to Teachers program was created. This program is the result of legislation introduced in the FY93 Defense Authorization Bill, codified as Section 1151 of title 10, United States Code. Funding was appropriated for FY94 and FY95 to provide stipends (up to $5000) for individuals to offset costs of certification programs, and grants (up to $50,000) to school districts as an incentive to hire TTT participants. State offices were opened to provide state-specific guidance to service members and school districts. Although federal funding was not appropriated for FY96 and beyond, DoD decided to use existing funds to continue TTT as a source of referral and placement assistance, primarily through the individual state offices. It had been planned that DoD would terminate the program at the end of FY99.
