WEST TEXAS MILITARY ACADEMY . West Texas Military Academy was founded in San Antonio, Texas, in 1893, by Bishop James S. Johnston qv with the aid of gifts from Mrs. Edward Cunningham of San Antonio and Mrs. George P. Andrews of Brooklyn, New York. The first building was located on Grayson Street, not far from Fort Sam Houston. In 1910 the academy was moved to a new location in Alamo Heights, where an attractive building was erected. This proved to be a rather ambitious step, and for some years the financial condition of the school was precarious. By 1917 there was a heavy debt, but better administration kept the deficit from growing, and in 1921 the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas conducted a financial campaign, which succeeded in reducing the indebtedness. In 1926 the academy ceased to be under the direction of the Episcopal church and was combined with San Antonio Academy qv with W. W. Bondurant as principal. The name was changed to Texas Military Institute, San Antonio. qv The former building of the San Antonio Academy on North Flores Street was used by the Lower School, and the buildings of the West Texas Academy in Alamo Heights were occupied by the Upper School. In a period when good secondary education for boys was hard to obtain, West Texas Military Academy made a real contribution. Many army officers stationed at Fort Sam Houston sent their sons to the academy, and there are many distinguished names on the roll of former students, including that of Douglas MacArthur.

http://www.kwanah.com/txmilmus/museum.htm
Museum History I n 1986, a project was started at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas, to establish a museum and archival collection, dedicated to the men and women who served in the military forces of Texas. In 1987, a military historical holding was established, sanctioned by the United States Army Center of Military History. In 1990, the Adjutant General designated Building 6, constructed in 1918, as the site for the museum. Volunteers were assembled and work began to establish two exhibit galleries, a workshop and a secure vault. As a result of their labor and dedication, a formal opening was held November 14, 1992. The museum has been incorporated with a state charter and is established as a not for profit corporation with the IRS. Austin area students tour the 36th Infantry Division Gallery The museum is a living testimonial to the legacy of the Texas military. With exhibits ranging from the Texas Revolution to Desert Storm, the museum is an important tool for informing citizens about the values and events that shape our modem world. Through the Texas Military Forces Museum, we remember those who sacrificed themselves for our freedom and make certain that their stories will not be forgotten. The museum had over 14,000 visitors in 1997, including presentations to over 1,400 school children. Visitors came from every state in the United States, schools and organizations, as well as from 28 foreign countries. Each gained a new awareness of Texas history and of the contributions made by Texans to the United States and to world history.

Camp Mabry: A Short History Camp Mabry, named after Brigadier General Woodford H. Mabry, the Adjutant General of Texas from January 23, 1891 to May 4, 1898, is the headquarters of the State Military Forces. The original 90 acres, located on an elevated plain, overlooking the Colorado River about three miles northwest of the Capitol Building in Austin, was selected by a group of prominent citizens, businessmen, and Guardsmen. It was accepted by Governor J.S. Hogg on behalf of the state in 1892. The same citizen's committee raised and spent $25,000 for improvements, mess sheds and an attractive grand stand. The adjutant General's Department had the prerogative of naming the camp and the choice was given to the 59 companies of the State Militia. 51 out of 59 voted to name it Camp Mabry in honor of General Mabry. With the onset of World War I, the Texas National Guard, along with the Oklahoma National Guard, formed the 36th Infantry Division. The Division was federally mobilized for the war and Camp Mabry was used by the Army, as a school for mechanics. In November 1940, the 36th Division and the 56th Cavalry Brigade were mobilized for a year, the 36th going to Camp Bowie at Brownswood and the 56th going to Fort Bliss in El Paso. The 111th Quartermaster Regiment, part of the 36th, mustered on the parade ground at Camp Mabry prior to going to Camp Bowie. When World War II erupted, Camp Mabry continued in existence as the Headquarters of the Texas Defense Guard, the only remaining State Militia. When the war ended, Camp Mabry was again the Headquarters for the State Military Forces. It was the focal point for the reorganization of the Texas National Guard, as well as the Texas State Guard. Additionally, the Adjutant General's office was moved from the state capitol to Camp Mabry, during this period.
