Texas Universities to Collaborate on Digital Library
Jul 27, 2005 By News Staff
By leveraging the resources of these major research university systems, the Texas Digital Library ill offer a cost-effective venue for the assembly and delivery of information that will benefit a variety of communities, including K-12 students and their parents, university researchers and the corporations doing business within the state and interacting with its institutions of higher education.
The Texas Digital Library is expected to reduce costly redundancies in licensing fees, digitization and access facilities, equipment, staff and operations through centralized licensing and delivery of information resources; ensure the most effective and efficient use of intellectual talent within the four major research university systems in Texas; ensure the most effective and efficient use of university research by corporations and businesses requiring expertise and technological resources to sustain and grow their business models in a competitive global environment; provide expertise and resources for the K-12 community; provide the infrastructure to and serve as a collaborator with educational, governmental and corporate entities in information access and delivery initiatives; preserve in one place, information for future generations of researchers, teachers, students and scholars.

With holdings of over eight million volumes, the University of Texas at Austin Libraries ranks as one of the finest research centers in the world. The General Libraries Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center Center for American History and the Tarlton Law Library together make up the University's library system, and ranks, collectively speaking, as the third-largest public university library in the nation. Serving as the University's main library unit within the General Libraries system, the alone holds approximately two million volumes and provides digital access to hundreds of bibliographic and full-text databases. PCL's holdings are chiefly in the humanities and social sciences, with specialized holdings in Psychology, Business, modern German and American literature, American and British history, and the South. Of particular note are the library's excellent print and digital map collections. With these impressive statistics in mind, we decided to write to Drew Racine, Deputy Assistant Director of General Libraries, with the intention of getting an insider's opinion on a number of issues we thought were of interest. Obligingly, Drew responded to our emailed list of questions with additional input from Carole Cable, Deputy Assistant Director for Development, and Jo Anne Hawkins, Associate Director for Public Services. (It should be noted here that the following opinions are not considered 'official' in any form or capacity.)

This page lists newly-announced sites available on the Internet which may be of interest to people on the Baylor campus. Sites from the current week (Monday - Sunday) are displayed first. The sites added most recently to the "Current Week" are added at the beginning of the list. "Week 2" - "Week 4" represent successively older weeks. When a new "current week" begins, the oldest week will be removed from this page. In this way, the most current 4 weeks listing new sites will be available on this page. In addition, we will keep a 6 months archive of these pages, cumulated at the end of each month. Many of these sites come from Net-Happenings NewJour Scout Report , and Yahoo!'s Picks of the Week , which you can browse to find additional sites that aren't listed on this page. • Architect Studio 3D
It's hard to imagine that a website would be able to conjure up the spirit of famous and controversial architects, but it does just that. With the assistance of a user-friendly interface, the Architect Studio 3D site allows users to build a model home for a number of clients and their very specific needs. With a small icon of the master residing in the bottom of the left-hand corner of the screen, visitors will get the chance to create their own building for one of these clients, and then submit it to a design gallery for consideration by others. For those visitors who may be less familiar with the world of architecture, there is a handy section titled "About Architecture". .
