When a tornado devastated the suburbs of Oklahoma City in 1999, North Central Texas, less than 200 miles to the south and the most populated area in "tornado alley" took notice. Some clear questions emerged: How might the Dallas-Fort Worth area have fared under such an impact? Do recent tornado strikes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area represent the magnitude of risk that the region would face from a class of tornado like Oklahoma City? Long-track violent tornadoes are rare, but over time, many cities in tornado alley have experienced them and their devastating impact. GIS helped assess the potential impact of such an event in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Detailed damage mapping from Oklahoma City was merged with demographic, traffic, and developed data from North Central Texas to estimate the urban impacts from multiple scenario paths. The average urban paths produced damage estimates of about $2.5 billion with a few reaching more than $4 billion. The average path impacted 70,000 residents. Employees and vehicles in each path were also estimated.
