East Texas
East Texas : the land between the Sabine and Trinity rivers : is Southern in character, with pine-covered hills, cypress swamps, and remnants of the great cotton plantatithe Civil War. Cotton farming has been supplemented by diversified agriculture, including rice cultivation; almost all of the state's huge rice crop comes from East Texas, and even the industrial cities of Beaumont and Port Arthur are surrounded by rice fields. The inland pines still supply a lumbering industry; Huntsville Lufkin , and Nacogdoches are important lumber towns. The real wealth of East Texas, however, comes from its immense, rich oil fields.

Big Bend, The Biggest Nat'l Park in Texas
A trip report of a weekend in Big Bend Nat'l Park. Sept. 3, 1994 For those of you who have never been in south Texas, even at the end of August it is quite warm. 100 degrees during the daytime is normal and the evenings don't cool off much early. At midnight it is pleasantly warm at 85 degrees. Out here in the desert I had to expect the temperatures to be more extreme, hotter during daytime reaching 105 and colder at night. The desert is big and contains many surprises. Interesting geological formations can be found all over the place. Volcanic rocks are forming the surface in many places. Lifting has exposed old rock formations and presents the layers to be seen from tens of miles away. Dinosaur bones have been found that are 60 to 80 million years old. Some old graves are just off the street, the most famous one is from a woman who died in her 30ies in 1910. Despite it is dry and hot and I sweat strongly it is astonishingly easy to find water or the marks of water in this huge desert. There are tons of dry washes and empty creeks that tell me that during the rain rich months flash floods are likely and that there must be enough water to carve canyons and creeks into the rock. Near the grave of that lady I found a few pools of water and in a dry creek digging just a couple of inches revealed moist dirt. Another trip lead me to a dry canyon, called something like Lost Burro. After a few miles the trail suddenly sort of disappears. Wild cacti and other plants with thorns gave me a hard time and punctured my skin in a few places. So with a little bit of blood on my knee and ankles, without a trail, not having seen anyone for a while (the whole Nat'l Park had no more than 30 visitors and half of those were staying in the air conditioned motel-like cabins in the higher elevations of the Chisos Mountains) it finally felt like it should feel in Nat'l Park. In the area I found a dry creek with some tiny pools of standing water. Following the creek bed upstreams I found a dry waterfall. It was easy to climb and only 15 ft high, cut into solid rock. Further up I found another dry waterfall; since it was higher I had to walk around it to the top were the water had carved a jacuzzi sized tub that was filled with dirty water and seemed like a life spender to all sorts of insects.

English narration
Peru:
Geography
Peru renowned as the land of the Incas, has an area of 1,285,216 square kms, and it is on the Pacific Coast of north-central South America. It is the third largest country in South America, behind Brazil and Argentina. Peru is considered a tropical country. It has three major regions, a narrow coastal belt, the wide Andean mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. The coastal strip is mostly desert; however the major cities are found in that area which are connected by the Pan-American highway. The rivers running down the steep slopes of the Andes, generate narrow oases (valleys) where most of the agriculture centres seat. Distinctive and exotic plants and animals inhabit these three different regions. From llamas, alpacas, vicunas and condors to piranhas and toucans; Peru is a naturalist's paradise. The Andes rise rapidly from the coastland. Just 100 km inland the Andes reach 6000 meters (19,688 feet.) The Huascaran is the highest mountain with 6768 meters (22,208 feet.) Most of Peru's Andes lie between 3,000 and 4,000 meters, separated by vertiginous canyons.

COURSE: Geog 305/500 Lecture format for three credits Class meets every M/W/F between 12:40 and 1:30 Class meets in the CHEM 100 Website: http://geog.tamu.edu/~prout Statement: Requirements: There are no prerequisites for this course, so there is no presumption of prior geographical study. However, it is an upper-level course that assumes a sophisticated level of lecture note-taking, reading comprehension, and study habits on your part. I assume all university students are capable and willing to learn, and I will help you become a better student if you ask. You must take responsibility for your learning by attending lectures, completing assignments, reading textbooks, and above all else evaluating your own learning and trying to improve. I highly recommend you form a small study group as soon as possible. One feature of a geography course that differs from other university courses is the need to use atlases and maps; be prepared for memorization of geographical features (both human and physical such as cities, landforms, and ethnicity) and their locations on maps of Texas.

76. Chapter Overview, Glencoe World Geography, Texas Edition, Glencoe, 2003
Chapter Overview geography is the study of the earth and its people.
http://www.glencoe.com/sec/socialstudies/geography/gwg2003/tx/content.php4/805/1
Chapter 3: Climates of the Earth Climate refers to weather patterns that occur in a place over time. Although the earth's climates are influenced by many factors, the most important is the earth's position in relation to the sun. Other influences relate to the specific location of a place and the features that exist there. World climate regions vary greatly, and each supports characteristic vegetation. Human activity may be contributing to the cycle of climate change. Earth-Sun Relationships The amount of sunlight that reaches the earth varies depending on Earth's tilt and rotation. Earth's revolution, or yearly orbit around the sun, also affects the amount of sunlight each area receives, resulting in seasonal changes. In the northern hemisphere, the solstice marks the beginning of summer and the equinox, winter. Because of the earth's tilt and rotation, sunlight at the Poles varies dramatically through the seasons, ranging from continuous sunlight to long periods of darkness. The greenhouse effect, which normally regulates heat in the atmosphere to support life, may be changing due to increased carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by human activities. Factors Affecting Climate Latitude, elevation, wind and ocean currents, and landforms all influence climate individually or in combination. The zone of low latitudes, near the equator, receives more direct rays of the sun year round than the zones of high latitudes near the Poles. Mid-latitudes experience variable weather. High elevations have colder temperatures due to thinner atmosphere that retains less heat. Wind currents carry warm and cool air around the earth in fairly constant patterns. Warm and cold ocean currents affect the temperature along coastal lands. The combination of water vapor and wind currents can form patterns of precipitation. Landforms such as large bodies of water and mountain ranges can also influence temperatures and precipitation.
