Play Therapy. ERIC Digest ERIC Identifier: ED430172
Publication Date: 1999-00-00
Author: Landreth, Garry - Bratton, Sue
Source: ERIC Clearinghouse on Counseling and Student Services Greensboro NC. Rationale for Play Therapy In a relationship characterized by understanding and acceptance, the play process also allows children to consider new possibilities not possible in reality, thus greatly expanding the expression of self. In the safety of the play therapy experience, children explore the unfamiliar and develop a knowing that is both experiential-feeling and cognitive. It can then be said that through the process of play therapy, the unfamiliar becomes familiar, and children express outwardly through play what has taken place inwardly. A major function of play in play therapy is the changing of what may be unmanageable in reality to manageable situations through symbolic representation, which provides children opportunities for learning to cope. The Process of Play Therapy Because the child's world is a world of action and activity, play therapy provides the therapist with an opportunity to enter the child's world. The child is not restricted to discussing what happened; rather, the child lives out at the moment of play the past experience and associated feelings. If the reason the child was referred to the therapist is aggressive behavior, the medium of play gives the therapist an opportunity to experience the aggression firsthand as the child bangs on the Bobo or attempts to shoot the therapist with a gun and also to help the child learn self-control by responding with appropriate therapeutic limit-setting procedures.

School-to-Work Transition. ERIC Digest ERIC Identifier: ED321158
Publication Date: 1990-00-00
Author: Lowry, Cheryl Meredith
Source: ERIC Clearinghouse on Adult Career and Vocational Education Columbus OH. The changing demographics of the U.S. work force mean that programs and services to help youth make a successful transition from school to work will be increasingly needed throughout this decade. Such services are necessary if women, minorities, and immigrants are to make up the predicted 80 percent of new workers by the year 2000, and if the United States is to be successful in an increasingly competitive world marketplace. This ERIC DIGEST is based on Feichtner (1989), a synthesis of research on school-to-work transition. The digest describes transition services and the youth who need them, lists programmatic barriers to effective delivery of services, describes models for service delivery, and discusses successful practices. Services and At-Risk Youth School-to-work transition services are intended to help youth develop the skills and attitudes they need to find and keep employment, to obtain and maintain a meaningful adult life-style, and to develop positive social interactions. The most accepted outcome measure of success for transition service programs is the eventual employment of the at-risk youth. A wide array of services may be necessary, including legal help, housing services, health care, financial aid, employment assistance, career guidance, basic skills education, occupational training, language assistance, transportation, and child care.

Resources for Parent Educators
Parent education has evolved from a didactic teaching model to a relationship and support model. In my work as an Intensive Family Services counselor, I am able to design an individualized parenting skills training for each client. To enhance the effectiveness of group training, parent educators may include support elements in their program. Three Elements of an Effective Parent Education Program
  • Direct Instruction
  • Small Group Support
  • Outreach and Follow-Up
  • Parenting education is often part of a coordinated family intervention. I like to keep a sign-up sheet on my office door that parents can sign to see me individually after the group session. It is helpful to include paraprofessionals in the group. These important team members provide transportation, home visits, and informal support to parents. Cultural similarities between professionals, paraprofessionals and the families can mean the difference in an effective, supportive program and one that is distant and irrelevant to families.

    From Dr. Rick Reedy
Helping students to have a healthy attitude toward testing . . (February, 2005) We'll revisit this topic as we begin the second session of TAKS testing this week.
Here is some insight from our Director of Secondary Instruction Mike Waldrip.
The purpose of a written curriculum is to ensure that students are given a firm foundation in essential knowledge and skills while at the same time teaching students to be logical, critical thinkers, exposing them to a wide variety of educational experiences. The state of Texas provides public school districts with a foundation curriculum for each subject area taught. This foundation curriculum is called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Students are assessed annually on the TEKS through an assessment program called the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills or TAKS. TAKS testing assesses student understanding of the TEKS and their level of mastery in various subject areas.
Standardized testing has been and will continue to be a fact of life in public schools. With the recent passage of the No Child Left Behind Act, the federal government is also requiring assessment of student mastery in various subjects in addition to our current state program. All said, these assessment requirements will never be the end all to what is taught in our classrooms. The classroom experience will continue to be enriched by experiences beyond the basic requirements of the state and federal government, to the benefit of all students; what is taught will always be tested. In Texas, the testing is much more rigorous than in other states.
