General Infomation The goal of the health education department of University Health System is to help patients understand the instructions that the doctors and nurses give. For example, the doctor may say something like "You need to lose weight." Often a statement like that leaves many questions in the minds of the patient. That is where the Health Educators step in. We are here to help you understand the details. Programs of Health Education Currently, the Health Education Department is focused on the following: Tobacco Cessation Program:
  • Learn how to break your smoking habits, and create a plan to do so. Participants may receive pharmacological therapy, as allowed by provider.
  • Salsa: Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Program
  • Learn to Eat Healthier Participate in 30 minutes of low-impact aerobics, which means that we always have 1 foot on the ground.

B oard of N urse E xaminers CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR NURSES The mission of the Board of Nurse Examiners is to protect and promote the welfare of the people of Texas by ensuring that each person holding a license as a nurse in the State of Texas is competent to practice safely. In 1991, as a result of legislation passed by the 71st Texas Legislature, rules were adopted requiring nurses to complete 20 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years for relicensure. Nurses must obtain 20 hours of CE credit and a minimum of 10 hours must be Type I CE. All 20 hours can be Type I CE.
Continuing education in nursing is defined as programs beyond the basic preparation which are designed to promote and enrich knowledge, improve skills, and develop attitudes for the enhancement of nursing practice, thus improving health care to the public. All nurses with an active Texas license are required to complete continuing education for relicensure. Each nurse reactivating an inactive or delinquent license must submit verification of 20 hours of CE completed in the two years prior to reactivation.
    CE Requirement
Twenty (20) contact hours (two Continuing Education Units) of continuing education are required every two years and coincides with the nurse's license renewal. A contact hour is defined as 50 minutes of a clock hour. A Continuing Education Unit (CEU) equals 10 contact hours. The CE hours must be earned within the two-year period immediately preceding the license renewal, beginning with the first day of the renewal month until the last day of the subsequent renewal. For example, if you renew your license in December 2004, the CE hours must be earned between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2004. Additional hours earned may not be carried over to the next renewal period.

    http://www.uttyler.edu/sbs/Tuition/rebates.htm
Tuition Rebate The 1997 Texas Legislature enacted a tuition rebate for certain undergraduates that meet the criteria stated in the Texas Education Code 54.0065 and Rule 13.86 of the Texas Administrative Code listed below. If you believe that you qualify, apply in the Registrar's Office in the Administration Building. Texas Education Code
    (a) A qualified student is eligible for a rebate of a portion of the undergraduate tuition the student has paid if the student: (1) is awarded a baccalaureate degree from a general academic teaching institution; and (2) has attempted no more than three hours in excess of the minimum number of semester credit hours required to complete the degree, including transfer credits and course credit earned exclusively by examination. (b) The amount of tuition to be rebated to a student under this section is $1,000, unless the total amount of undergraduate tuition paid by the student to the institution of higher education awarding the degree was less than $1,000, in which event the amount of tuition to be rebated is an amount equal to the amount of undergraduate tuition paid by the student to the institution. However, a student who paid the institution awarding the degree an amount of undergraduate tuition less than $1,000 may qualify for an increase in the amount of the rebate, not to exceed a total rebate of $1,000, for any amount of undergraduate tuition the student paid to other institutions of higher education by providing the institution with proof of the total amount of that tuition paid to other institutions of higher education.
