Is your teen troubled?
My Troubled Teen is a directory of teen boarding schools, private schools, boot camps, military schools, residential treatment centers, wilderness programs, or Christian programs. Each of these programs vary in the level of therapy and services that they provide to teens. Need help with your child? Has your teen drastically changed his/her behavior recently? Does your child suffer from ADD, ADHD, ODD, Learning Disabilities, Hyperactivity, or Emotional Abuse? Are you having problems with drug and alcohol abuse, disruptive behavior, lack of respect, talking back, or sneaking out or cutting class? Are you ready to give up? We Can Solve Your Problems, Call Now! Who We Are... My Troubled Teen is a directory of troubled teen programs and schools located in North America. Our goal is to help you in your search for a program to fit the specific needs of your child. We are not a referral service like so many copy-cat sites you may have visited on the Internet. Referral services are paid a commission if your child enrolls in the school or program that they recommended you to. These commission can be as high as $3000 per enrollment. My Troubled Teen feels that this is not an ethical practice and could possibly lead to a child being referred to the wrong program just for a higher commission.

Skepticism about the program probably is due to perceived ties to Scientology. If it was the Southern Baptists, I don't think it would be scrutinized as much." [Src: St. Petersburg Times, Mar. 30, 2003] Well Justice Babb, ABC TV Wear News in Pensacola, Florida has just published a three part series on alleged child abuse in two Baptist-run boarding schools right down there in Florida. Before linking to the series it might be useful to get some background material on where these schools came from, who accredits them, and Wiley Cameron and Michael Palmerthe Baptist preachers behind them. TACCCA and Wiley Cameron . The Roloff Schools are a string of Christian boarding schools for wayward teens founded by Lester Roloff, a fundamentalist Baptist preacher. In the 1970s Texas health authorities investigated the schools for allegations of whipping, handcuffing and using other abusive tactics on teenagers. The schools protested state scrutiny and the case ended up in the US Supreme Court which ruled that Roloff would have to abide by state licensing laws. So in 1985 two Roloff schools, the Rebekah Home for Girls and Anchor Home for Girls, moved to Missouri. Another school, Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy, moved to Missouri from Mississippi in 1987 after a judge ordered teens to be removed. The founder of Mountain Park had been trained by Roloff. Roloff died in a plane crash in 1982 and was replaced by a man named Wiley Cameron.

Schools hail pastor as a hero who redeemed teens
    Post-Dispatch/November 17, 2002
    By Matthew Franck
A half-smiling portrait of a deceased radio preacher steals the attention of all who enter the small lobby of Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy. It's the visage of Lester Roloff, who is seen by several Missouri reform schools as a hero in the battle to bring wayward teens to Jesus, while fending off the demons of government control. Mountain Park's Web site proudly says that the school's founder was personally trained by the minister. Elsewhere in Missouri, Agape Boarding School and Thanks to Calvary say they are not Roloff schools, but their leaders praise the pastor's work and display photos of him. Agape has named one of its dorms in Roloff's honor. Roloff, who died in a plane crash in 1982, is perhaps best known for his "Family Altar" radio ministry, which was once broadcast from Corpus Christi, Texas, to more than 140 stations. As his radio ministry grew, the fundamentalist Baptist preacher began reaching out to drug-addicted men and rebellious teens. By the late 1960s, he was taking in dozens of wayward girls, most of whom were pregnant. His philosophy was to immerse the girls in a monastic lifestyle of Bible teachings. He kept the teens in check with the rod of corporal punishment. It was a pattern for dealing with defiant teens that appealed to parents from across the country and is still followed today. But Roloff left another legacy.

Wall Street Journal Surveys Therapeutic Boarding Schools
For profit, not-for-profit, some are good, some are bad. (It is a hurried article and not very sophisticated about the state of residential education ("boarding schools") in the United States. Boarding School Options Shift for Troubled Teens March 31, 2005 Boarding School Options Shift for Troubled Teens
by John Hechinger and Anne Marie Chaker
Wall Street Journal Desperate parents of out-of-control teens increasingly have turned to therapeutic, or "emotional growth," boarding schools that often blend outdoor adventures with psychotherapy and academics. But the abrupt shutdown of one of the field's most prominent operators last week amid lawsuits alleging student abuse is raising concern about the quality and financial stability of these little-regulated, high-priced schools. Last Friday Brown Schools Inc., the closely held owner of one of the nation's best-known therapeutic boarding chains, closed with no notice to families, sending 300 students home before the end of the school year. Brown which operated five boarding schools in Idaho, California and Vermont, plus other youth programs in Idaho, Texas and Florida filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 7, meaning its operations will be liquidated.

Why Parents Seek and Pay For Therapeutic Boarding Schools
"Nothing else could have pulled me out of my despair."
While some students in such programs are affluent, others come from middle-class families that are sacrificing heavily for their kids' sake.
Research on the effectiveness of such programs is limited. In 2000, University of New Hampshire professor Keith Russell followed 900 kids in eight different outdoor behavioral programs and found that a majority of kids had a "significant reduction of symptoms" at discharge. Therapeutic education industry booms as parents seek help for kids. (Published in the Chicago Tribune 1/20/2004Byline: Bonnie Miller Rubin Todd had struggled in school, had difficulty relating to his peers, and fought a depression that had dogged him since fifth grade. Increasingly, he sought to dull his pain with marijuana. His parents tried therapists and medications. But then Todd was arrested after marijuana was found in his locker at Wheaton North High School. Worse, a drug dealer threatened his life. They knew they had to go a step further.
