SGML/XML and (La)TeX
SGML, XML, and (La)TeX: How Do they Work Together?
Introduction
The following note was originally written in mid-1992 as a boilerplate document to help answer the question "What's the relationship between SGML and TeX (LaTeX)." It needs updating, as there are now many more articles relevant to SGML and (La)TeX as complimentary technologies; see TUGboat recent issues, for example. Until the following is updated (Nelson B.?), it still may be useful here as is. Robin Cover
On the Relationship between SGML and TeX/LaTeX
The similarity of SGML to LaTeX has frequently led to discussion on the networks and in published literature about the exact (future) relationship between the SGML, TeX and LaTeX. More than once we have heard this comment about SGML: "Well, SGML is OK, but why can't we just do it all in LaTeX or LaTeX3?" The answer: "You can. You can also drive screws with a wood chisel, and you can chisel wood with a screwdriver." [credits Steve DeRose, if memory serves]. TeX is for putting ink on paper, and SGML is not. SGML is for defining markup languages and for validating the structure of electronic information against a formal grammar; TeX is not. LaTeX (apparently more or less a rip-off of Scribe, to the extent I have investigated it) is a little different story: it helps put ink on paper using macros that can be designed as descriptive markup notations. One could re-implement something like SGML in LaTeX, but I can't think of any sane reason to do so.

LaTeX: It's Not Just for Academia, Part 1
by Kevin O'Malley "Don Knuth's Tau Epsilon Chi (TeX) is potentially the most significant invention in typesetting in this century. It introduces a standard language in computer typography, and in terms of importance, could rank near the introduction of the Gutenberg press." Gordon Bell, forward to Tex and metafont, New Directions in Typesetting A new year is upon us and you've finally decided it's time to take the plunge and write the next great American (French, German, Japanese?) novel. Or maybe you just need to update your resume, compose some letters, or write some project documentation. If you're like most Macintosh users, you probably use a word processor like MS Word or Nisus Writer Express for your daily writing needs. This article suggests an alternative to commercial word processorsa program called LaTeX. It provides as much, if not more, utility as commercial word processors. It's rock solid, has a long history of use, a large user base, and best of all, it's free. It may not be right for everyone or for every writing situation, but LaTeX is worth exploring and testing out. You may find it really enhances your writing process and offers some key advantages over word processors.

Noweb - A Simple, Extensible Tool for Literate Programming
Literate programming is the art of preparing programs for human readers. noweb is designed to meet the needs of literate programmers while remaining as simple as possible. Its primary advantages are simplicity, extensibility, and language-independence. noweb uses 5 control sequences to WEB's 27. The noweb manual is only 3 pages; an additional page explains how to customize its LaTeX output. noweb works ``out of the box'' with any programming language, and supports TeX, latex, HTML, and troff back ends. A back end to support full hypertext or indexing takes about 250 lines; a simpler one can be written in 40 lines of awk. The primary sacrifice relative to WEB is that code is seldom prettyprinted. (Follow this link for pointers to noweb noweb has been used for ten years at many universities and industrial sites. It has been used for tens of thousands of lines of code in such languages as awk, C, C++, Haskell, Icon, Modula-3, Objective Caml, PAL, perl, Promela, Turing, and Standard ML. I maintain a list of people and projects that use noweb The articles

    Overview.
The Kenzo program is the last version (16000 Lisp lines, July 1998) of the CAT (= Constructive Algebraic Topology) computer program. Kenzo is also the name of my cat . The Kenzo program is a joint work with Xavier Dousson. The previous version EAT (May 1990) was a joint work with Julio Rubio. The Kenzo program is significantly more powerful than EAT, from several points of view. On one hand, for the computations which could be done with the EAT program, the computing times are divided by a factor generally between 10 and 100. The reasons are multiple and it is not obvious to decide what the most important are. Some are strictly technical; for example the numerous multi-degeneracy operators are now coded with a unique integer, using an amusing binary trick: various tests show much progress has been obtained in this way. Other reasons are strictly mathematical; for example another choice for the Eilenberg-Zilber homotopy operator leads in the Kenzo program to Szczarba's universal twisting cochain; in the EAT program we used Shih's universal twisting cochain; experience shows that Szczarba's cochain is considerably more efficient than Shih's one. It is a major mathematical problem to understand

International Workshop on Hybrid and Real-Time Systems Grenoble, France, March 26-28, 1997
The focus of this workshop is on mathematical methods for the rigorous and systematic design and analysis of hybrid systems. A hybrid system consists of digital devices that interact with analog environments. Driven by rapid advances in digital controller technology, hybrid systems are objects of investigation of increasing relevance and importance. The emerging area of hybrid systems research lies at the crossroads of computer science and control theory: computer science contributes expertise on the digital aspects of a hybrid system, and control theory contributes expertise on the analog aspects. Since the two research communities speak largely different languages, and employ largely different methods, it was the purpose of the workshop to bring together researchers from both computer science and control theory. This workshop, sponsored by the European Community Esprit program under research grant HYBRID EC-US-043, was preceded by several formal and informal meetings, at Ithaca, New York (1991, 1994, 1996), Lyngby, Denmark (1992), Boston, Massachusetts (1993), Grenoble, France (1995) and New Brunswick, New Jersey (1995). The three-day workshop will feature 2 tutorial surveys, 5 invited presentations and 31 contributed papers (22 regular and 9 short), which were refereed and selected by the program committee before the workshop. Program Wednesday, 26/3/97

    Gareth McCaughan: programs
The most useful thing here is also one of the shortest. ( Note : this is no longer true, with the advent of the new version of . It's got quite a bit longer.) 3col-2.07.tar.gz is a gzipped tarfile about 30k long containing the source code and documentation for a program which converts text files to PostScript giving an awful lot of text to the page (3 columns, each 100 lines of 93 characters, but you can change the text size and this changes these figures; in fact, you can change just about everything). It's very flexible, and produces output that's as attractive as can be expected in the circumstances. I wouldn't be without it. You should have a look at some rather out-of-date HTML documentation . You can also grab just the source code , if you really insist, but you'd be much better advised to get the full distribution , since that includes a Makefile, some up-to-date documentation and a couple of useful programs that use And it's smaller, because it's compressed.)
